I’ve got another mystery going on. Right on my street this time. So I’ve put on my Detective Dog hat and I’m off to investigate.
Whatever it is, it doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to leave, so I’ve got plenty of time for my investigation.
The man who walked by with his little dog seemed to be a bit concerned though. He told his dog to stay away from it and made a point of telling my person it was there.
I’m not sure why it isn’t leaving. These things usually don’t hang out when dogs start bothering them. I hardly ever even come across one.
Wait a minute. This thing isn’t moving at all. Does that mean it can’t move?
It can’t be dead because anything dead in the street is squashed flat. This is definitely not flat.
Maybe it’s playing dead, hoping it will be ignored.
I don’t think these guys are smart enough to do that though.
Maybe a bird accidently dropped it as it flew by.
That’s it! There’s some bird out there who knew I needed something to investigate so the bird dropped this right at the end of my driveway. Right where I would find it.
That bird must love me.

Bongo, that “bird dropping” froze in your presence!!! I’d leave it be… Sometimes bird droppings may come to life!!!

Marina, my person passed the “bird dropping” when she was going to the mailbox and when she came back it was still in the same position with its head up – so she tapped it with a stick and it didn’t move. Maybe I scared it to death.

Eeek! Is that a rattle snake?
Bongo
April 26, 2013 at 8:51 pm
Jackie, it’s just a baby bull snake. They’re harmless and actually good to have around because they get rodents. The person who passed by it with his little dog thought it might be a rattle snake – but there’s no sign of a rattle anywhere.

Yikes! Is it real, Bongo… I think you can better give me your cap, not to investigate, but to close my eyes 🙂

Little Binky, I’ll let you use my cap as long as you give it back when you’re done. I’ve got some more investigating to do.

Benny & Lily, the hills are where the rattlesnakes hang out. I guess I’d better watch my step.

Bongo, that doesn’t look like the good kind of snake. Did you take it home?
Bongo
April 26, 2013 at 8:57 pm
FleaByte, I didn’t have to take it home because I found it right next to my driveway. I don’t think my person would ever let me take it in the house though.

Kat n Collies, whenever we meet a live one (which isn’t often) it usually runs the other way before we even have a chance.

Karen and Molly, the time my person found a live one in the driveway she wouldn’t even let me out of the house to bark at it.

I can never remember…pointed head poison, flat ok…or flat poison, pointed ok. That’s why I stay away from snakes.
Bongo
April 26, 2013 at 9:02 pm
Patricia, we only have two kinds of poisonous snakes here. Rattlesnakes are obvious because they have the rattle on their tails. The other kind is a coral snake and you just remember RYB for red yellow black. That’s the order of the colors on a coral snake. I’ve never run across either on my trails.

Vulture spagetti? It might be because vultures like meat not pasta. Perhaps a young vulture dropped it accidentally and his mom told her not to eat it because it has become dirty. They may have their proprieties, too.
Bongo
April 27, 2013 at 1:49 pm
Kolytyi, I think those vultures will eat anything. But around here it was more likely a hawk or raven. Who knows what they were thinking.

*gooseskin* Oh…..snake!!! We’re not good at snakes Bongo, so you and your person are so brave!
We have a similar snake in Japan which is called “Japanese rat snake” that is not venomous, that eats rats , so they are considered as a good snake, too.

Kevin, my person used to work with someone who is a snake expert, so she’s lost some of her fear of snakes by learning more about them from him.

Hi Y’all!
My Human won’t let me check out a snake or other crawly things ’cause we have lots of poison ones. We were warned by the DNR that some of the poison snakes were crossing with non-poison ones…so we should consider any snake a potential danger.
Y’all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog

Hawk, my person had seen that snake and knew it was dead before she ever let me near it. We only have two kinds of poison snakes here and they’re pretty easy to spot if you know what you’re looking for.
