Cactus Murderers

Yesterday I told you about all those police cars and sheriff’s vehicles that were parked right by my trails. I was afraid they were after my person, even though I didn’t know what she could have done wrong.

But after a little further investigation I believe I’ve discovered who all those police officers are after – or at least why they’re after them.

You see, I ran into a bunch of prickly pear cactus that was totally smashed up, demolished, and destroyed. And now I’m sure all those police officers are looking for the cactus murderers.

I thought maybe the gophers were guilty, because I found some gopher holes right next to that cactus.

But those gophers are much too little to do all that damage. They probably ran back down their holes and hid.

Then I thought maybe the javelina could have done this. But when javelina eat the prickly pear they leave teeth marks and they’re not usually into total cactus destruction. After all, that would be future dinners they’d be destroying

So I’m going to keep working on my investigation …

and if those police officers don’t find the cactus murderers first, then when I find them I’m really going to give them what for.

Maybe I’ll cook up a batch of this mashed up cactus and feed it to them.

Oh, did I forget to take out the pricklers? My mistake.

Cactus Maintenance

Hey person, don’t worry. This cactus isn’t going to attack me.

Yeah, I know my ear is getting kind of close to it. But believe me, it’s not going to attack.

I’ve got to clear out all these weeds in front of it. This cactus is really special and it doesn’t want to be covered up.

Just a little bit longer, person. You can go ahead and go if you want. Don’t worry, I’ll catch up with you.

Fine, you can wait here if you want, but I’m not quite done. Just a few more bites.

Okay, I’m just about finished.

See, I told you this cactus wouldn’t hurt me. Can’t you see? It loves me.

Prickly Pear Delight

Hey person, what did you do with all those prickly pear fruits you had left over? I hope you made something good for me.

You made juice? I don’t want juice. I want something good to eat.

Pink juice!? I told you I didn’t want juice. I don’t want juice of any color. Now come on person – let’s get some treats here.

Ice cream!? You made ice cream? Now we’re talking. Is all that for me?

What? I only get a little dish? What are you going to do with all the rest?

What do you mean that isn’t for me? Where’s mine?

Mmmm! This is good! And I like this dish even better than that other dish. I don’t have to worry about breaking it.

I’m almost done with this. Can I have some more?

Hey, wait a minute! How come Scratchy gets some? He didn’t even help get the prickly pear fruit.

This is Not a Baking Blog

Hey person, what are you doing with those prickly pear fruits on my blog?

You’re what!? You’re making bread with them. Since when is this a cooking blog?

Person, this is going a little too far. I can see if you were making dog treats maybe. That could go on my blog. But prickly pear bread? Those prickly pear fruits don’t even smell appetizing.

Throw those prickly pears in the garbage and start making me some dog treats.

Wait a minute. What’s that pink stuff you’ve got there? Did Scratchy do that? Let me have a look.

You’re putting that in the oven? What about the dog treats?

Finding Fruit

Today my person and I went on a different kind of walk. We went on the same trails and were out about the same amount of time, but we didn’t go very far.

I can’t complain though. I had fun.

My person brought along some tongs and a bag and said she was going to pick some prickly pear fruit.

You go right ahead, person. I think I smell something better over here.

It’s got to be here somewhere.

Maybe it’s over here.

Got it!

Look what I found in the bushes. I don’t even mind that I had to get stuck to do it.

I have to what, person?

I’m not dropping my bone until you drop your prickly pears.

Cactus Alert

I really can’t figure out my person sometimes. My trails are full of pricklers. You’re supposed to stay away from them, but lately my person has been stopping and taking pictures of them.

Come on, person. Let’s get on with our walk. What do you want pictures of those darn pricklers for anyway? They’re here all the time. It’s not like they’re something special or anything.

I’m really losing my patience, person. Can’t you at least just click and walk?

Do you believe it? She’s stooping down to get closer to those pricklers.

What was that you said, person? I thought it sounded like “Ouch!”

You what? You got pricked? See, I told you that would happen. Will you listen to me now?

Oh no, now what are you doing? There aren’t even any cacti here. Well at least you won’t get stuck.

Where’s My Trail?

Hey, what is this? This used to be my trail. Yesterday it was my trail. It’s always been my trail. It still smells like my trail. But now it’s got branches in the way, and freshly planted prickly pear cactus, and some square thing sticking out of the ground.

I guess I’ll have to go on my other trail. It’s a good trail too, but I like having options.

Oh, now I know why the first trail is blocked.

Somebody wanted me to go on the other trail because the dogs are out in the yard near the trail. And they like to bark at me. I think I’ll ignore them. That makes them bark even more.

But I’m still confused. How am I going to go on a trail when there’s cactus growing in the middle of it? It wasn’t there yesterday. Maybe it will be gone again tomorrow. My person says there’s been a trail there forever and it even has trail signs on it.

I guess someone needed to plant some cactus and wasn’t sure where to put it.

Plump Prickly Pears

We didn’t have rain here for weeks and weeks. The prickly pear cacti were getting skinny. So skinny that you could hardly see them if you looked at them from the edge. They had to come at you flat on, but don’t try to shake their hand. You’ll be sorry.

The last few days we have had lots and lots of rain. And now we have plump prickly pears. Even the fruits that were looking like scrawny little things have plumped out. The prickly pears are so plump now that even when they try to hide they can’t.

Where did this hedgehog cactus come from? I think I remember it from when it was blooming, but it must have walked away and just now come back. Or maybe it was a skinny little thing like those prickly pears. My my, look how plump you’ve gotten little cactus. You’re lucky you have pricklers or I might want to eat you.

I think all the cacti on my trails have become happy campers. I bet they think they found their cloud with the silver lining.

No More Flowers

Most of the flowers on my trails are starting to fade and I’m kind of happy about it. I’m getting tired of my person stopping every few feet to take flower pictures. Aren’t we supposed to be walking when we go out on my trails? I mean, it is called a walk, isn’t it?

My person makes me stay around her when she’s taking pictures and it’s really boring. I start looking for some good weeds to munch on and she gets mad at me for it and yanks me away from them. Or I try to run off down the trail – and then, boing! I hit the end of my leash. And my person yanks me back when I do that too.

So it’s good that we’re running out of flowers for my person to take pictures of. Well, I thought we were anyway. We were walking along the trail and I saw something yellow that wasn’t there before. And then another – and another.

Oh, no! It’s the prickly pears. They’re starting to bloom. And the prickly pears are everywhere on my trails. And they all have lots of flowers. If my person tries to take pictures of all those flowers I’ll never get my walk. We’ll be stopping and going forever. Click, click, click.

It’s bad enough that I have to hang around and wait for my person while she’s taking pictures. But what if she doesn’t finish before it’s time for dinner?

Prickly Pear Attack

Along my trails live lots of prickly pear cactus. Mostly I try to stay away from those things because they are full of pricklers and I don’t want to get pricked by them. Somebody around here doesn’t seem to be worried about that though, because there are big bites out of some of those cacti.

I wonder if they taste any good. Someone thinks they do because they’re willing to brave the pricklers and all in order to eat them. I’d sure like to try them – they must be very good – but I’m going to see if my person will remove the pricklers first.

My person says it’s the javelina that eat those things. Those creatures must be braver than I thought, or dumber. I wonder if they run around with pricklers in their mouths. Ouch!

I think there’s a new kind of javelina stalking my trails now. When the normal javelinas bite into a prickly pear the bite mark is curved and bumpy. But these new bites are straight across and smooth. And this new javelina is not very good at finishing everything on its plate. It leaves most of its food on the ground.

I think this new javelina deserves a good spanking.
