Campfire Criminal

Bongo sniffing the remains of a camp fireSomething smells terribly awry on my trails.

Wait, maybe I used the wrong word. I don’t smell any rye bread anywhere.

Something smells fishy?

Did I say fishy? Where’s the fish? Where? Where?

Oh, no fish. I don’t even smell any. Guess I’d better find another word.

Let’s see- it smells like the charcoal remains of a former fire. Like a barbecue without the meat.

No meat! There’s got to be some criminal offense here.

I’d better get my Detective Dog hat on.

Detective Dog

What happened here?

Someone had a fire on my trails and didn’t invite me.

And I bet they had treats and goodies and stuff like hot dogs and s‘ mores.

And they didn’t invite me.

Wait a minute!

No wonder they didn’t invite me.

They’re not even supposed to have a fire on my trails – and even if they could, fire restrictions are in effect. No fires anywhere.

It’s really dry out here. My puddle hasn’t even shown itself in a long time.

I bet those people know that as Detective Dog – a law abiding citizen dog (well almost) – I would be required to turn them in if I discovered who they are.

And I certainly wouldn’t want my trails to burn up.

So I’m investigating this one for sure.

Bongo investigating the old fire

And as soon as I discover who they are they’d better watch out.

I’m going to gather up all my dog buddies and after we water down their fire, we’re going to water down those culprits too.

See if they ever try starting a fire on my trails again.

People Leaving Messages

I Brake for Butterflies bumper stickerI’m finding some strange messages on some of the cars parked at my trails.

I think people are trying to imitate us dogs by leaving messages, but they haven’t quite figured out how to do it. I’m not sure they make any sense at all.

Look at this one for instance. “I Brake for Butterflies.”

It would take an awful lot of butterflies flying right into someone at the same time for that someone to break. I mean, those butterflies don’t weigh much and they’re pretty fragile themselves.

I can’t figure out – is this person with this bumper sticker afraid of butterflies? They’re not really scary.

Maybe I should find a butterfly and show this person how friendly butterflies can be. They might realize they wouldn’t break at all.

But here’s an even stranger message.

Bumper sticker says "I ascended at the Sedona 2012 Festival

I’m still trying to figure this one out. Did this person ascend to the top of one of the tall rocks around here? They’re pretty tough to climb, but some people do it.

Or maybe they ascended in one of the hot air balloons that we see.

But some people in Sedona think they can ascend into the atmosphere, or the ozone, or some higher plane somewhere. I think the plane has to take you up there.

I hope those people that ascend in strange ways know how to find their way back down without falling. That might be a rude awakening. You start floating up and away and suddenly you’re falling instead.

Oops.

But I finally found some car messages that make sense.

Bongo in front of a car with bumper stickers

I think I would really like the people who leave messages like this on their car.

Bumper stickers: "Rescue Adopt" "Wag More Bark Less"

Trail Danger

Down the TrailI was heading down my trail and I realized they were everywhere. All over my trails.

I don’t want to get near that nasty plant.

I think somebody put that plant there on purpose – so everybody would stay in the center of the trail and not wander off in the bushes.

Because if you wander off in the bushes you might not come back.

That plant has a reputation for catching its victims and holding on to them.

And never letting them go.

I bet if I wandered far enough into the bushes – if I managed to make it, that is – I’d find skeletons being held by that plant.

Skeletons of animals or people that tried to escape, but couldn’t.

Animals or people that died in the clutches of that plant and are stuck forever.

Yikes! This is scary. I sure hope that plant doesn’t get overgrown onto my trails and try to grab me.

I don’t want to go back home yet, but I sure don’t want to be stuck in the clutches of one of those things.

These plants look innocent enough.

Catclaw flower

That’s how they fool you into getting too close.

Catclaw flowers

But these plants have a horrible name for a horrible reason.

They’re called Catclaw.

And I have firsthand experience with catclaws. The animal kind.

Catclaw thorns

And these thorns look almost the same.

Yikes! I’ll be walking carefully back home now.

If you don’t see a blog post from me tomorrow, could somebody please come check the bushes on my trails?

What a Waste

Pet Waste StationSomething new appeared on my trails today and I don’t get it.

It says it’s a Pet Waste Station, but since when are pets a waste?

I mean, that would be really sad if someone thought their pet was a waste and decided to throw their pet away.

What if that pet thought they were going for a walk on my trails, and then when they got this far their person took them and threw them into that big green box?

Maybe a cat would fit in that box. Or even a little dog.

But what if someone tried to fit a dog as big as me into that box?

That would be a pretty tight fit.

Or what if bunches of people decided their pets were a waste on the same day. It could get pretty squishy in there.

But maybe someone would find a pet already in the box that they liked. That they didn’t think was a waste. Would they take that pet home with them then?

Then that pet wouldn’t be a waste after all – so what was it doing in the pet waste box in the first place?

This whole pet waste thing is totally confusing to me.

Maybe I’d better check this out and see if there are any pets around who think they’re a waste.

I’ll tell them they’re not a waste and let them out of the box. Well, unless they’re cats, that is.

Bongo sniffing around Pet Waste Station

Nope, I don’t see any pets around here.

I guess nobody’s going to use this box after all.

Who Lost a Leash?

Bongo sniffing a leash on a cairnI find strange things on my trails fairly often, but today I found one of the strangest. I found a leash, with nobody attached, just hanging around by itself.

Time to get on my Detective Dog hat and start looking for clues.

.

.

.

.

Detective Dog

Hmmm. I’m picking up some scents, but I’m not sure what it all means.

Bongo sniffing around the found leash

Hey wait a minute. One of the scents on here is mine – from yesterday.

So much for solving this mystery by the smells around here.

What could it all mean?

Somewhere on my trails there is a dog running around without a leash.

And there is also a person on my trails who is not attached to a leash.

This could be really bad.

I’d better go look for that person and that dog. They might be lost from each other.

Maybe I could be a hero and reunite them.

Wait a minute. What’s this?

Bongo sniffing a strap on a branch

Another leash?

What is this, National Lose Your Leash Day?

Maybe I can find some clues around this one.

Strap Clues

Hmmm. I think this might be some kind of conspiracy.

Somebody might be trying to keep Detective Dog busy so they can pull some heist somewhere else.

They’re not going to succeed though, because I found out something that they don’t know.

This second thing isn’t a leash at all.

It’s a strap with clips on it so people can attach their stuff.

So when those people pull that heist, they’re going to discover that their strap is missing.

And they’ll have no way to carry all the stuff they stole.

I’d better go now and find out where they dropped all that stuff.

Maybe they dropped some treats.

What’s that Smell?

Bongo in front of a Brownfoot plantI don’t get it! I just don’t get it.

People are so strange sometimes.

One of the best things on my walks are the great smells I find. I look forward to checking my messages and finding out what my dog buddies are up to.

But my person is so impatient. She’s always yanking on my leash and making me leave a great smell before I’ve finished with it.

I don’t know how many times she’s done that.

It’s so frustrating!

But I put up with it because I’m such a good dog. If my person wants to walk instead of sniff stuff, I can go along with it – as long as I at least get a little sniffing in.

But here’s the funny part.

We walked past this bush.

Brownfoot plant

It didn’t have any kind of special smells on it – no messages from my friends or anything.

So I walked on by.

And you know what happened?

My person stopped and she wanted to smell this thing.

Brownfoot flower

She’s never stopped to smell anything ever before.

Why now? Why these flowers?

I’m going to have to give my person some lessons in what to smell.

Brownfoot flower

I think she’s really confused.

And if she doesn’t get it…

Bongo in front of a brownfoot plant

I might have to yank on the leash and pull her down the trail.

Searching for Century Plants

Bongo near a century plantMy person and I went out on an extra long walk. A century plant trek.

We started out on the trail where most of the century plants were last year. We figured we’d find lots of them. Well, my person figured. I was just happy for the walk.

We found some century plants.

The old dead ones from last year.

But there were only a couple new century plants on this whole trail, and they weren’t even in full bloom yet.

So we headed back. The trail is a loop so we kept looking for century plants on the way back.

And then we found it.

.

Century plants on a hill

Century Plant Hill.

Century plants with sunlit rocks behind

There were lots of century plants on this hill. Last year there were only two.

Century plant against blue sky

Century plant with red rocks behind

Century plant with intense yellow and red colors

close up of century plant blossoms

If you look really close you can even see the bugs flying around the flowers.

Speaking of bugs, they were everywhere. Especially on my person because she doesn’t have lots of hair to protect her like I do. Those little “no see ‘ems” that come out this time of year were all over her arms.

So we headed back home.

Century plant against a cloudy sky

But my person still couldn’t stop taking pictures, even though the bugs were worse around the plants.

I thought maybe if I turned the color off…

Century plant silhouette against a cloudy sky

the bugs would go away. But they didn’t…

Century plant with Coffee Pot Rock in the background

so I turned the color back on again.

Century plants, trees, and Mogollon Rim

One last look at Century Plant Hill and we headed home.

Century plant with bird in a blossom

Come on, person. I said we were heading home. I don’t care if there’s a bird in that plant. You have to look really close to see it.

Well, if you’re going to stop and take pictures of birds, then you’d better show the picture of me…

Bongo and little white and black dog

and the new friend I made on the way to Century Plant Hill.

This part was way more fun than looking for century plants.

Mysterious Object

Century Plant budI found this strange object when I was out on my trails. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I guess I’d better get investigating and figure out what it is.

Time for my Detective Dog hat.

Bongo with Detective Dog hat covering his eyes

This won’t do.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

That’s better.

Maybe it will help if I look at that object in its natural environment.

When I found it, it looked like this.

Century plant bud on the ground

Oh, look at this. These weeds are right near where I found this object.

Bongo checking out weeds

Maybe these will give me some clues.

Bongo turning from the weeds

I am not eating these weeds, person.

I didn’t find anything in here anyway.

What do you mean, look up?

Looking up at a Century Plant

What does that have to do with anything? Can’t you see how high it is?

This little thing I found was way down here.

Century Plant in front of Thunder Mountain

I still don’t know why you’re looking at that.

Bongo and a Century Plant

Well, yeah. It’s kind of the same color.

I’m not getting anywhere with this investigation. Let’s head on down the trail.

I’ll think about this later.

Name that Corner

Bongo by a Bird of Paradise bushThis time of year my street has two corners with special names. At least I think they should have special names.

After we got back from my trails I got an extra long walk so we could go to these corners and my person could take pictures. I guess I don’t mind her taking pictures if I get a longer walk because of it.

This first corner is for the birds.

Bird of Paradise, that is. That’s what these yellow flowers are called.

.

Bird of Paradise bush

Bird of Paradise flower

The next corner is Century Plant Corner.

Every year for as long as I can remember, one Century Plant has shot up on this corner.

Century plant on a corner

I’m not sure what’s going on though, because these corners have the wrong street signs on them. They have some really strange names that don’t even look like Bird of Paradise Corner or Century Plant Corner.

This is really bad, because people are going to get lost when they try to find these places.

Maybe I’d better get some new signs and post them on these corners.

Oh yeah, forget the signs. That Century Plant isn’t in full bloom yet and awhile back I promised I’d show some pictures of the ones on my trails when they started blooming. My person made my climb a hill so she could get pictures of this one. The first one to bloom on my trails this year.

Alright, that’s enough. Stop your gawking.

This is a blog about me.

I Like the Old One

Bongo on a short leashMy person is definitely the mischief maker today. You see, I had the perfect leash. Well, perfect would have been walking without a leash, but if I’ve got to walk my person with a leash, this one was the best. When my person tried to keep me from going out further on that leash, it didn’t work. That leash was definitely on my side. I could go get loves from people my person tried to keep me away from, and meet up with dogs I didn’t know yet. I mean, how am I going to add to my list of girlfriends if I don’t get a chance to meet any? But now, I have a new leash. . .

Bongo looking at the leash

Come on person, ease up! I’ve got places to go, smells to sniff, and people and dogs to meet.

Bongo tight on a leash and looking back

Can you give me a little more slack? You’re cramping my style, person.

Bongo on a tight leash looking at a distant dog

This is not good at all. That dog – you see that dog way over there? Well that dog came right up near me, and if I’d had the old leash attached to my person I would have been able to get to that dog and give him what for. He pretends he’s being friendly, but I know what he’s really thinking.

Wait a minute. It was because of that dog that I got my old leash working just right. I guess I’d better be nice to him next time he comes over.

Hey person, you’ve got to let me go. I’ve got to go tell that dog we’re buddies now.

I think the power of this new leash has gone to my person’s head.

She is such a mischief maker.
