Me – Scary?

09 Dec

Rocks in FogShortly after my person and I hit the trails it started raining. It was cold too – cold for us, that is. But we’re troopers so we headed on out. We could have gone back home – it wasn’t far – but what fun is that?

I didn’t think we’d see anyone on the trails. Nobody much comes out when it’s rainy and getting dark.

Well, my person was taking some pictures of the disappearing rocks before they disappeared completely in fog and I was hanging out on the trail waiting for her. Very patiently mind you. I heard some footsteps coming toward me and around the bend here comes a guy running along on the trail. He was pretty cool, but right behind him here comes the good part.

Behind that running guy was a little black dog – about the size of Scratchy. No, that dog was smaller than Scratchy because Scratchy is a pretty big cat. And that little black dog was afraid of me.

I wasn’t doing anything. I didn’t think I looked that scary. No dog’s been afraid of me before – but that dog was. He wouldn’t go by me until my person grabbed my collar and pulled me aside. Then he crept by on the far side of the trail. Slowly, slowly he crept until he made it completely past me. He went a little ways and then looked back to make sure I wasn’t following him. Then off he ran after his person.

I wonder what he’d have done if my person had let me run after him?

Bassa, is that it? I’ve got to change my wardrobe so I don’t scare the little dogs? Oh, man!

What a good boy you are Bongo! That poor little dog has probably been bullied by some other dogs and that is what made him afraid. I am sure that deep down in jis heart he would know that you are not a dog to be feared…you are too kind, and trusting and you are a good boy…

    Lots of licks

Patreciau, I’m glad you told me that. Now I can blame it on some other dog and know I’m not scary at all. Here’s a slobbery kiss back to you.

I scare people at night because of my color. I’m so black that I’m invisible until they’re right next to me. When they finally see me, they jump. I have to admit that I think it’s kind of funny. That’s not very nice of me, is it?

Lola, I think it’s funny that you can sneak up on people and startle them.

Well you know how everything looks scarier at night when it is dark and rainy? You probably looked like a giant to that little dog. But we all know you aren’t scary. 🙂

I think that little black dog may have been scared or even attacked by a big dog your size some time in the past, and that’s why he was scared.
My little Poppy was attacked by a big dog (an Airedale Terrier) when she was a puppy, and she has never forgotten it – she is still scared when she sees a big dog. In fact, she gets me to pick her up to keep her safe!
That little black dog doesn’t know how kind and gentle you are.

Barb, maybe that little dog was scared by a big dog before. I’ve met some little kids who are kind of scared of me because other dogs have scared them.

    Bongo –

Madam L says you can’t rely on little dogs to think clearly in the best of light when they see a big dog. They can get scared or aggressive. She is glad your human held you back, because sometimes those little ones will bite when a bigger dog would just bark. Just keep on being Bongo!

Wayside Artist, I guess that’s why they call those little dogs ankle biters.

    Hi Y’all,

Oh Bongo, that’s too bad the little guy was afraid of you. They tell me lots of little guys are afraid of big guys. They tell me that’s why they have their own side of the dog park…we are so big we can hurt them when we play. I lay down to play with the little ones.

    Y’all come by now,

Hawk, I guess I don’t run into too many little guys on the trails because it’s too far for them to walk. I’ve never hurt Scratchy (but he’s hurt me) so I think I can be gentle with the little guy – but I guess he doesn’t know that.

Bongo, maybe he was just spooked by the weather and you appeared suddenly out of the dark and stormy night…like a wolf out of his nightmares? He sounds jittery…scary puppyhood? You the good dog.

We guess that little dog is afraid of bigger, brave dogs and that is why he and his person run the trail so early in the day. You were a good dog to sit quietly sweet Bongo while they passed. Hugs and nose kisses

Er, Bongo…did you have a bath recently? Maybe, you know how body odors can really be … well, just thought I would come back and tell you. Or maybe the dog itself knew it hadn’t bathed recently and didn’t want you to take offense by its odors. 🙂
