Out the Door

03 Nov

Bongo Heading Out the DoorWe had thunder again the other day. We don’t usually get thunder this time of year. I think whoever makes that loud sound up there must be picking on me because we’ve had a lot of it. Anyway, my person put my anxiety vest on and it helped some.

That awful thunder was starting to calm down, but I wasn’t sure it was gone yet when my person had this horrible idea. She decided to leave the house and leave me here alone – well, Scratchy was here but he doesn’t count.

She started out the front door and I wasn’t about to let her do it. I ran right over to that door and made like I was going to push myself outside. She knew I’d do it, and I knew she wouldn’t let me because then she has to catch me before she can leave. And I’m pretty good at playing keep away.

My person went to the garage door and I was right there. I wouldn’t let her go into the garage unless she took me with her. She headed back to the front door and I went ahead of her. Then she did something I didn’t like at all. Halfway to the front door she cut back and went out the door to the garage and shut it before I could get there.

I’m supposed to be the escape artist. I guess I taught my person a few of my tricks without meaning to.

Huh, oh! Sweet Bongo you better be careful what you let your person see you do so she will not learn any more of your escape artist tricks. Sorry you had to stay home with Scratchy who doesn’t count. Get your thinking cap on and come up with a good way to fool her next time so you can go with her. Hugs and nose kisses

Mumsy, my person said she was going somewhere that dogs aren’t allowed. I think she should have cancelled and stayed home with me. At least it didn’t thunder while she was gone. Hugs and nose kisses back to you.

Ah, poor you, Bongo! You have taught your human your ways! I hope you were okay by yourself! Thunder can be scary. You can come here. We don’t have thunder, but it was 18 degrees this morning. And we’re just a state away!

Katie, my person can turn the heat on in the morning. I wonder if I could talk her into moving to New Mexico. I like that no thunder thing.

Kari, I think my person is getting too smart for her own good. At least she was right this time – the thunder had stopped by the time she left.

Wonderbutt sticks his face in the door and refuses to move as I gently, then not so gently, try to close it. I have to reach down and push, well, kind of shove, him backwards so I can close the door. I think he’s trying to get a reverse facelift on his wrinkles.

Wonderbutt is my kind of dog. I bet he could hold the door open while I run through it.

Jen has to do that with June Buggie. He thinks he should go outside when us dogs do. Jen uses a squirt bottle with water to keep us back. Be glad you don’t have to suffer such a humiliation. *sigh*

Rumpy, my person told me she used to have a squirt bottle to keep Scratchy off the counters when she first got him, but my younger person was only six at the time and he thought the squirt bottle was great fun and squirted Scratchy all the time. Me, I would think it was great fun and try to catch the water in my mouth. Maybe I should talk my person into getting that squirt bottle out again.

Bongo those humans can be tricky. You’ll just have to out smart them. 🙂

Brown Dawgs, I can outsmart my person sometimes, but I think I’m going to have to come up with some new tricks. She’s getting to know me too well.

Hi Bongo! My name is Sophie and katyoparty is the human who belongs to me. I read your post while she was out in her art shack. I’ve realized my owner plays the same tricks on me sometimes except she’ll make me stay outside while she goes in the house. She’s even been known to throw the ball and when I go to get it she’ll go in. Usually I stay within a foot of katyoparty but sometimes she thinks I need to be outside for awhile. I’d like to go in her art shack and make her stay outside. Nice to meet you.

Hi Sophie. Nice to meet you. I trained my person to not leave me outside by myself because sometimes I jump the fence. Of course this works against me sometimes. On nice days I’d like to stay out there and she won’t let me.

It’s interesting that dogs who are scared of thunder are comforted by anxiety vests, while dogs in costumes generally get stressed. I suppose the vests hug the dogs in just the right place, while costumes may squeeze in unpleasant ways.

Andrea, I read some info on the development of the anxiety vest and they tried lots of different things, and came up with the right fabric and the right design to hug the dogs the right way.

Poor Bongo! I used to be able to move that fast, but gravity has slowed me down… and made me a bit clumsy. See if I was there, you’d still be lucky…

Sandra, come on over. Then I could go with you. The only way my person can catch me easily is to open her car door. I jump right in. Of course she usually takes me right back in the house and shuts me in.

Hi Bongo. I’m sorry to hear that you don’t like thunder. My dog Webster doesn’t like it either, and I got him one of those anxiety vests, but it doesn’t seem to help him. 😦 My other dog Daisy is also an escape artist and I’ve had to chase her a few times, but she is very fast and like you, is very good at playing keep away. Are you fast, Bongo? I bet you are. 🙂

Laurie, I’m fast but I usually like to tease my person. When I get out and she comes after me I let her get close and then I move about twenty feet further until she gets close again. She tricks me though. She gets in her car and I think she’s going to take me for a ride so I jump in the open door.
