Around Christmastime my person receives large cardboard boxes in the mail from her sister and brother. The boxes are filled with smaller boxes wrapped in brightly colored paper – mostly red and green. My person used to put the smaller boxes under the Christmas tree and leave them there until Christmas Day.
***
Sometimes my people would visit their family when it wasn’t Christmas. On the way between my person’s parent’s house and her sister’s house is a candy store and my person would stop there and buy malt balls for her sister. Then my person’s sister discovered that a grocery store near her house had very good malt balls, so when my people visited her she would have malt balls for my younger person.
***
It was my first Christmas at my house, there were presents under the tree, and Scratchy and I were the only ones home – and something under the tree smelled very good. So I sniffed around and found which package that smell came from.
It didn’t take much to tear into that package and the contents tasted extra special. Don’t worry younger person, I left you the malt ball wrapper.
I’m not sure why, but my person never leaves brightly colored boxes under the Christmas tree anymore.

We only put presents under the tree right on Christmas, right before we started with all the presents. 🙂

Dianda, my person thinks you are very smart to wait to put out the presents. Me, I wish they were around earlier for me to explore.

This is a fascinating mystery, Bongo. Strangely enough, my mom used to have lovely red and green packages under our tree, too! Not any more. Now they live on the shelves and floor of the closet. Hmmm. Be very careful of the malted milk balls. They are delicious, but they can give you a mad tummy ache!!
Love & licks,
Cupcake

Cupcake, my person keeps saying something about tummy aches too. Why don’t they just come up with some dog safe malt balls and leave the presents under the tree?

Luckily there are no presents under my Christmas tree… I prefer to cook a delicious dinner for my family as a gift and my Viking will get a special present from Santa Claus!!!

Sweet Kitten, delicious dinner sounds good to me. I hope my person cooks me one.

That seems very reasonable–you only ate the food and not the other gifts or ornaments!

Sherry, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I agree – I only ate the food and that’s what it’s for is to eat, isn’t it? I don’t know why my people have a problem with it.

You were a very lucky dog that the malted balls did not make you sick. A Christmas blessing for sure.
My three have already found their toys. Big brown dog, Mutt, stole them all and had taken it upon herself to destuff them for the other two.

Kibble, my person tells me I’m lucky too, but she’s not giving me another chance. Sometimes I wish I had another dog to play with, but not if he will steal my toys. I hope the other two dogs get some toys that Mutt won’t bother with.

I love those packages under the tree. I leave them alone until my people unwrap them. Then, they give me the paper to shred. Woo hoo!

Lola, paper is fun too, but if something smells good I just can’t resist getting into it.

Trees in the house with pretty packages that smell good sitting under them that you are not allowed to touch. Parts of Christmas are a mystery…

Sorry to read about your plight, Bongo. Maybe Santa will leave some presents under the tree when he arrives at your home. Hopefully, they’ll be something yummy inside.

When me and my mom knew that some people especially in foreign contries don’t open their Christmas packages until on the Christmas day. They put those presents under the Christmas tree.
Because in Japan, most people open Christmas presents as soon as we get them and it doesn’t matter if the day is close to Christmas or not. I think that keeping those Christmas gifts until on the Christmas day must be much more exciting than opening immediately. 🙂 We should try !!!

Kevin, I have so much trouble waiting to open presents with good smells, but my person says that the anticipation is part of the fun. Especially for children it’s really fun to wake up on Christmas morning and find all the presents under the tree. My person has lots of good memories of Christmas morning from when she was a child, and when my younger person was little.

Bongo! Did your little person like the wrapper? Years ago we had a hamster that escapee during Christmas time. We came home and all the candy canes on the presents were gone and in the corner with all the half eaten candy canes was Gretel the Hamster! She had the biggest sugar buzz we ever saw!
Great post!
God Bless You!

.That was naughty boy Bongo to eat all the balls and only leave the wrapper.I am not at all surprised that your people no longer leave those sort of gifts under the tree
.
I had a Labrador Dog called Lucky who tried to eat my daughters chocolate santa. It was very big and stood on top of the sideboard. He could not reach it but his claw marks are still there today..

Angelswhisper, eating is one of my favorite things to do. I sniff out food wherever I go. I’ve never tried licorice though. My people don’t share that. I may have to have a talk with them.
