I don’t know what Scratchy is thinking – but he does this every year. As soon as the Christmas tree comes out and my people put it up he jumps into the empty box. I wonder what he thinks he’s going to find in there.
It’s just a big old empty cardboard box – and pretty beat up too. I’d help finish it off by chewing on it, but I know I would get in trouble if I did. But Scratchy has to get in there every time. Maybe he thinks there’s a catnip garden inside – or some fun kitty toys. Maybe he thinks he’ll find a nice soft bed that he can fluff up with his paws and then curl up into. Maybe he knows that box is empty and he’s just got to check it out to make sure. You know, like box patrol. He’s got to make sure everything is okay with the box.
Once he’s gotten in the box and checked it out he doesn’t stay long. He jumps right back out of that box, like everything’s okay with the box for another year. I wonder what he’d do if that box appeared in the middle of the summer?

Hi Bongo, Have your people put up the Christmas tree just now? We put up ours about two weeks ago!

Sweet Kitten, my people actually put the tree up a few days ago. My person is sometimes slow at helping me post what I write.

An empty box is a small paradise for every cat. 😉

Dianda, you must be right because Scratchy goes for that box every time.

I love boxes, too, but I have to take them apart. I’m very good at it.
Bongo
December 21, 2011 at 1:19 pm
Lola, I think taking boxes apart would be much more fun than sitting in them.

Silly Scratchy. We bet he wanted to see if there was anything inside. 🙂

Brown Dawgs, I think you’re right because as soon as Scratchy found there was nothing in that box he got right back out again.

Our first pet together, Burt the cat, did the same thing. My childhood cat did as well. It is just one of those mandatory cat inspections I do believe. : )

Just Ramblin’, I don’t know what it is with cats and boxes, but Scratchy’s lucky he doesn’t stay in there longer or I’d be going in after him.

It’s Scratchy’s Boxing Day.

Wonderbutt’s person, maybe I could talk Scratchy into moving to another country – one where they celebrate Boxing Day. What a great idea!

You think you would like that, Bongo. But I’m sure that you would miss Scratchy – after awhile.

Wonderbutt’s person, you’re right – I might miss Scratchy – after a long while.

I wonder why cats are sooo fascinated by boxes.. my cat Difranco LOVES boxes And paper bags. He even tries to climb into empty cereal boxes. Cats are weird.
Bongo
December 21, 2011 at 3:26 pm
Jaxart4animals, Scratchy only gets into big boxes, but my person says she’s had cats that liked boxes made into houses and some that loved getting into paper bags. Cats really are funny sometimes.

Box patrol – that’s great. I always wondered what the deal was. Thanks, Bongo

Cats probably wonder what the deal is with dogs and bones. We all have our “thing”.

Patricia, dogs and bones makes perfect sense to me. I have a hard time figuring out cats though.

Scratchy is a funny kitty. Roory likes exploring empty boxes too…the pups would rather tear them apart 🙂

Deannamelanie, funny is right. Scratchy can be downright strange at times.

Maybe Scratchy is looking for the brightly colored packages that smell good 😉
Bongo

Misty Shores, you could be right. Since those good smelling packages aren’t under the tree Scratchy might think they’re in that box.

Empty boxes are full of mystery Bongo! 🙂

Bassa, I guess that’s the way Scratchy figures it. Now I’ve just got to figure out Scratchy.

Maybe it’s Scratchy’s holiday adventure get-away trip. Short but sweet! 😉

Sunshine, you might be right. Scratchy doesn’t get much excitement hanging around the house all day.

We think inspecting boxes is one of a cats callings in life…they always gotta know if anything is them or if they make a good play thing or place to nap. Hugs and nose kisses

Chancy and Mumsy, I just don’t get those cats – but I guess a cat’s gotta do what a cat’s gotta do. Hugs and nose kisses back to you.

Close the lid, tape it up and address it to australia, don’t forget to mark it “Handle Without Care”

My cat brofur Shiro looooves empty cardboard box, too! I think that cats might feel very safe being in cardboard box away from doggies??? Woof?
Bongo
December 22, 2011 at 10:36 am
Kevin, those cats only think they’re safe. If Scratchy stayed in there too long I’d go after him.

I think they all like empty boxes, but also full boxes. When I opened the box with the Christmasballs, our cat had to know what’s inside of it and jumped in very carefully, without breaking anything 🙂
Bongo
December 22, 2011 at 4:08 pm
Angeslwhisper, your cat must be very talented. I think Scratchy would break everything in the box.

I dunno about this, but I know what ya mean about cats and boxes. I’ve never seen my cats pass up an opportunity to sit in a box, no matter the size.
Bongo
December 22, 2011 at 4:11 pm
Rumpy, maybe Scratchy is a stranger cat than I thought because he only checks out the big boxes – the ones he can’t see inside of.

Hi Bongo!
This is Ginger…… ya know if you were to close the box up tight and put it away till after Christmas you would not have to worry about scratchy till after Christmas… Would serve her right for getting in a box…. ugh.. cats! Dogs rule.. cats drool! Here comes the old guy so I better get off for he would scold me for this post… hehehehe
God Bless You!

Ginger, that’s a great idea. Bones even thought I should ship the box off to Australia. I think I’ll go shut that box right now. Anybody got some tape? God Bless.

Cardboard box patrol is a VERY important kitty duty. It’s kind of like sniffing EVERYTHING when you’re a dog.

Flo that helps. Maybe I understand kitties a little better now.

Finally! She walked away from the keyboard. I have internet access at last! Hi, Bongo! My name is Grenny, I am a cat and the queen of my household. Being a queen is a big responsibility. In the early morning, I wake the humans to make sure the food and water bowls are full. I snuggle my humans when they are sad, wash my companion cats when they are dirty or ill, and though I am the smallest cat in the household, I sternly discipline ANY subject that misbehaves. I also check out every change in my kingdom. An empty box may contain food, toys, or a monster that might hurt one of my feline or human subjects. It is my duty to see to their safety and well being. Perhaps Scratchy hops into the box to check for food, toys, or monsters.
Bongo
December 30, 2011 at 3:29 pm
Grenny, so glad you were able to sneak onto the keyboard, although I don’t like it when Scratchy does that to me and starts saying things on my blog. It sounds like you take good care of your family though. Scratchy won’t tell me what he’s looking for in that box, but it must be something because he gets right back out of the box as soon as he doesn’t find it.
