Cactus Alert

23 Aug

Bongo on the trail with prickly pear cactus aroundI really can’t figure out my person sometimes. My trails are full of pricklers. You’re supposed to stay away from them, but lately my person has been stopping and taking pictures of them.

Prickly Pear Fruit

Come on, person. Let’s get on with our walk. What do you want pictures of those darn pricklers for anyway? They’re here all the time. It’s not like they’re something special or anything.

I’m really losing my patience, person. Can’t you at least just click and walk?

Do you believe it? She’s stooping down to get closer to those pricklers.

Prickly Pear Fruit

What was that you said, person? I thought it sounded like “Ouch!”

You what? You got pricked? See, I told you that would happen. Will you listen to me now?

Oh no, now what are you doing? There aren’t even any cacti here. Well at least you won’t get stuck.

Patreciau, I know better. No messages on cactus. I’m particular when I choose my message plants.

Thanks Chancy and Mumsy. I’ve learned my lesson and I stay far away from pricklers. But I guess I have to teach my person about them. Hugs and nose kisses back to you.

Susan, it’s hard to have patience when my person is always stopping to take pictures – but I guess I can put up with it since you and some of my other friends like them.

Bongo, You just need to be patient with humans. Especially if they are taking pretty pictures – Sofie and Louise

Sofie and Louise, I guess I have to put up with those pictures sometimes. Otherwise my person will probably go out with her camera and leave me behind.

Those look like pretty neat cacti. Are they prickly pears? I’ve heard prickly pears are tasty….but maybe not for dogs!

Jen, they are prickly pears. My person says they make things like jelly and candy out of the fruit and the javelina eat them. I’ve never tried one though. Even the fruit has pricklers.

Thanks Nel. I’ve been missing you but everything is fine here. My person has had that “busy” thing for a long time now and hasn’t had much time to visit my friend’s blogs either.

The pricklers are really big, I can imagine they hurt, but your person can’t say she wasn’t warned, Bongo. At least you’re listening 😉

Angels Whisper, my person is always warning me about those pricklers. She really should know better.

Dalton, my person gives me food and treats and lets me take her on walks – so I guess I have to put up with some things.

Good point! But don’t let her get away with too much, I am sure you do more for her – protect the house, dig up the garden, sort recycling, warm the bed, check the sofa is comfy..

        August 29, 2012 at 9:22 pm

You’re right Dalton. I do do all those things. I’d better put in for extra treats.

    Hey Bongo, Jet here.

AH… Dude… according to Mom, the intrigue is about the cactus flowers! No biggie for us, biggie for the bipeds! Hope your human feels ok. 🙂

    • Bongo

      August 24, 2012 at 12:12 pm

Hey Jet, that cactus prickler didn’t really get my person too bad. It just poked her a little. I’m still not sure why she wants to take pictures of those things. They’re too prickly to eat.

According to Mom, they are pretty, who can account for taste???

        September 1, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Hey Jet, my person says some people eat those things. Maybe I should try them – but not until somebody gets the pricklers out for me.

Yes, Mom told me the same thing… YES, watch for those pricklers!

hey, dude, now your person, my friend, knows how cactus feels. i was still pulling them out of my leg after i got home

    • Bongo

      August 24, 2012 at 12:15 pm

Nancy, my person just got poked by one of the big white pricklers that are easy to get out – and it didn’t stick in her. Those little ones are the nastiest because you usually get bunches of them and they’re hard to get hold of. She says she’s pulled lots of them out of people and pets.

I especial like the first cactus picture Bongo. Who has been nibbling it? 🙂

    • Bongo

      August 24, 2012 at 12:19 pm

Thanks Bassa. That’s the natural shape of those fruits – I guess the hole on top is where the flower used to be. The javelina do eat both the fruit and the green parts of the cactus though. Javelina look kind of like pigs, but they’re not related.

Those cactuses are amazing! They look like a red radish!!! That part is a bud? I appreciate your person who kindly took pictures of these gorgeous and beautiful cacti to share with us!!! 🙂

      August 24, 2012 at 12:23 pm

Kevin, Those cacti had big yellow flowers in late spring/early summer. I had to wait for my person to take pictures of those too and she stuck some on my blog. These are the fruit. They’re full of juice inside and some people make jelly or candy out of them.

I understand. I do this same thing almost everyday… doing my road with my camera and stopping every step to click one or two times (if not more).
But, I do this alone, hahaha. I think you should do some pact like: one day is to photo, one day is to run freely 😉

    • Bongo

      August 24, 2012 at 12:26 pm

YouKai, I’ve just got to convince my person of that. She always takes her camera on our walks. She says she’s afraid she’ll miss a good photo opportunity if she doesn’t take it. Then she almost always gets her camera out for something.

Susan, my person says, “You’re Welcome.” She didn’t really get hurt bad. That prickler just poked her a little. I can’t say I didn’t warn her though.

Wow, it is too bad about your mom! Those cactus are sort of cool! Ginger has a bunch of thoughts about them….. like what would happen if scratchy accidentally of course, got thrown into a patch of them…… *Dad is giving Ginger a what for right now*… sigh…

    • Bongo

      August 28, 2012 at 6:56 pm

Collies and Chuck, my person told me not to even think about taking Scratchy outside with me. I wonder why. She says she used to have some outdoor cats that would sometimes manage to get themselves into the cactus – I wasn’t around then, I swear – and she had to get out the tweezers and pick out the pricklers. Sorry about your what for Ginger.
