Finding Fruit

12 Sep

Sugarloaf and a prickly pear patchToday my person and I went on a different kind of walk. We went on the same trails and were out about the same amount of time, but we didn’t go very far.

I can’t complain though. I had fun.

My person brought along some tongs and a bag and said she was going to pick some prickly pear fruit.

.

.

Prickly pears with fruit

Tongs on prickly pear fruit

You go right ahead, person. I think I smell something better over here.

Bongo checking out a patch of prickly pear cactus

It’s got to be here somewhere.

Bongo's head inside the prickly pear patch

Maybe it’s over here.

Bongo into the prickly pear in a new spot

Got it!

Bongo chewing on a bone

Look what I found in the bushes. I don’t even mind that I had to get stuck to do it.

Bongo with a cactus sticker in him

I have to what, person?

I’m not dropping my bone until you drop your prickly pears.

What’s an adventure without a few scratches? It seems like the risk was well worth the reward for Bongo.

Too right Bongo – you went through the pain to get your bone, you keep it! Prickly Pear fruit is rather good though.

Susan, I’m so bummed. My person wouldn’t let me in the house with my bone – but she brought the prickly pear fruit inside.

I always get in trouble when I pick up bones on the trail. Glad you were able to snag it, even if you only got to keep it for a little while.

Lola, I usually get into trouble too. I think I got away with it for a little while because my person had her hands so full of stuff.

Kevin, the thorn wasn’t stuck too far in – mostly in my hair – and my person took it out right after she took the picture. She got one in her finger and she said it didn’t hurt being in there but it hurt when she pulled it out. I got to taste some prickly pear bread she made. Now she just made sorbet and I sure hope she gives me some.

Lexie and Mica, I think I should get to keep that bone too. I almost did, but my person wouldn’t let me in the house with it. So glad you’re back. My person says she’s been busy studying as well as other things. I’ll try to send her your way soon.

Bongo, do you have any idea where the bone came from? It wasn’t an old piece of pears, or was it? Anyway, you have a good nose 🙂

Angels Whisper, I’ve found other bones around that area when my person has gone off the trail to take pictures. Maybe the coyotes leave them for me.

And we are glad you didn’t get the needle/thorn stuck in your sweet face!

Kat N Collies, my person said those prickly pears didn’t have a lot of flavor on their own. She didn’t let me try any, but she did let me have some of what she made from them.

Bongo, what does your person do with the prickly pear fruit? I once scored a pizza box that had lots of nice cheese inside – no idea why that got put in the trash at the park but I didn’t think it smelled that bad.

Lola, my person says mostly prickly pear fruit is made into jelly and candy and you can find that in the tourist shops around here. She decided she wanted to try something different. I see by your other comment you saw the first thing she tried. She made something else too. It’ll be on my blog tomorrow.

That’s a cool vest you’re wearing in the photos. Is that the thunder vest or one especially for prickly pear protection?

Sandra that vest is an anxiety vest, which is about the same as a thunder vest. I’ve had to almost wear it constantly this summer but the thunder is over now. Yay!

Ginger, there seems to be a stash of bones in that area. I wish my person would let me go there more often. Those cactus pricklers mostly just stuck in my hair and didn’t really poke me. My person got one stuck in her finger though. She says it didn’t hurt until she tried to pull it out.
