Pine Nuts

30 Oct

Pine Tree with ConesWhat do you mean, person? Food grows on my trails? You mean besides the running, hopping, and flying kind?

No person, I’d never eat any of those little furry or feathery things. I’m a good dog. Remember?

But what kind of food is there besides that?

It’s in those pine trees? I don’t want to eat pine cones, and pine needles would be totally yucky. You must be thinking of some other kind of tree. And those other kind don’t grow on my trails.

Pine Cones

What? There’s food in the pine cones. Pine nuts? And you can take the shells off of the nuts and eat them?

Pine Cone and Pine Nuts on the Ground

Woo woo! Look, I found some of those nuts right here on the ground. I wonder why some forest critter hasn’t eaten them yet?

Bongo checking out dried nuts

Yuck! Gross! Ptouie!

Hey person, there’s something wrong with these nuts. They’re all dried out. No wonder those forest critters left them on the ground. We’ve got to return these back to the forest for a refund.

Pine nuts are delicious, I guess you have more fun playing with the pine cone than eating them.

Doggy’s Style, I think I’m going to have to send my person to the store for some good pine nuts. But the cones are fun to play with too.

Chaotic Scribbles, I think I’m going to have to put in a complaint to the forest management.

Dianda, roasted pine nuts sound really good. I’ll have to give that a try.

Dianda, my person says fresh pine nuts are really good, but the dried out ones don’t have much flavor at all. You can buy pine nuts in stores, but they’re usually pretty expensive.

Do you remember the guy in “Best in Show” who kept enumerating nuts? And his dog?

We have lots of pine cones around here, but we never see any nuts in them. Mom didn’t know there were nuts either.

Lexie and Mica, I guess only certain kinds of pine cones have nuts in them. We have lots of pine cones in my front yard and none of those have nuts. I guess the yard would be full of pesky squirrels if they did.

Marina, I’m not having much luck with that refund though. I think I’m going to have to talk with forest management next.

We see pine trees and pine corns in Japan, too but never seen pine nuts…besides the shape and the color of the pine corn seems to be a bit different from the one we have here. Mom said that she saw pine nuts sold in grocery store and she thinks they are yummy! I’m not sure if I like them though because I usually don’t eat any nuts. Do you, Bongo? 🙂

Kevin, the pine trees in my yard are different than the ones on my trails and they don’t have any nuts either. Sometimes my person drops an almond and I eat that, but she doesn’t give me nuts very often.

Susan, I was kind of hoping the tree would take the old nuts back and just produce a fresh crop for me.

Angels Whisper, I think I must have watered those nuts too much because my person says if you get them when they’re not dried out they’re really good.
