Which Gopher Wins?

04 Mar

Bongo checking out a gopher holeWe’ve had lots of rain and some snow lately and it really soaked into our normally dry ground – so now that the weather is clear again the gophers around here are having a heyday.

Mounds and holes are everywhere on my trails. One day I even found a hole right in the middle of the trail. Pretty nervy of that little guy.

But usually the digging evidence is off to the side of the trails where the ground is softer and those little guys don’t have to work so hard to get through.

.

Bongo checking out a gopher hole

I’ve never, ever seen one of those gophers on my trails. I think because I’m such a big, manly kind of dog I must make the earth shake as I walk. Those little guys sense it before I ever get near and run back down their little holes in sheer fright.

Not that I’d ever hurt a gopher. I’d just like to play with one for a little while. Or chase it into the woods. If it would only run on solid ground.

But I finally found the cleverest gopher of all. This gopher doesn’t need to run back down his hole anytime someone big comes near. This gopher really knows how to dig a hole.

This gopher has his own entrance with special armored protection.

Gopher #2 picked some smart real estate to keep most wandering noses away!

Will and Eko, I know my nose didn’t go near that hole.

Well, that second gopher may be clever for guarding his entrance so well, but it’s his loss for not meeting you!!!
    🙂

Marina, those gophers just run and hide in their holes anyway. They’re no fun.

I had one of those holes in my yard! I had to put a huge rock over the hole because I was certain Blueberry’s head would get stuck in there – she kept jamming her head into the hole and then she’d come up and have a dirt face. 🙂

Blueberry’s human, those gophers are everywhere. Too bad Blueberry couldn’t get that gopher to come out and show himself.

If I ever saw a hole like that, my bony little nose would go right inside. Then the gopher might kiss it. Or bite it off.

Too bad the gophers don’t come out to play. We were walking in the park today and the squirrels were teasing us. They can run safe up into the trees like your gophers could into their holes so I don’t know why they don’t come out and and give you at least a little peek 🙂

Those pesky squirrels. They’re worse than the gophers. At least the gophers are quiet and you don’t see them – but those squirrels do the same thing here. They hang out in trees and tease or sometimes they run along the phone wires.

Ouch!!! The gopher has to be very careful to enter his hole or the prickle might stick him!

Kevin, I wonder if that gopher looked at what was outside his hole and then went back down and found another way out.

That is one smart gopher! My brother had a bad mole problem in his pretty yard. It was like Bill Murray in CaddyShack, watching him try and get rid of those moles.

FleaByte, my person is laughing just thinking about your brother and the moles. At least gophers are cute – well, that’s what my person says anyway. I don’t know since I’ve never seen one. My person says moles are ugly, but we don’t have any of those around here. Just the gophers.

I don’t know if gophers are the same as groundhogs but we have the groundhogs here. Sometimes this guy comes right down to MY porch. I don’t know what to make of him though because he looks like a loaf of brown bread (and Diane tells me my butt’s big!).

Lola, my person says they must be different because our gophers don’t have big butts. She says they’re really little and kind of look like squirrels. My person laughed out loud about the big butt thing.
