The Hole

What’s this?

It’s a hole.

A hole in the parking lot of my trails.

And I bet I know who did it.

Those pesky gophers.

They’re always digging holes on my trails.

And piling up mounds too.

Normally they stay off my trails and don’t cause any hazards for anybody.

But look at this!

They’re traveling right out into the parking lot.

Building a whole network of underground tunnels.

And if they’re not careful this whole parking lot’s going to collapse.

It’s already started.

What if somebody falls into this hole and disappears into a deep, dark gopher kingdom.

Or what if those gophers don’t stop at the parking lot.

What if they tunnel all the way to my house and my house falls in.

This has got to stop.

This has got to stop now!

I’m getting me some gopher traps.

Now I’ve just got to figure out how to fit into those tunnels so I can lay those traps where the gophers will find them.

National Mole Day

Today is National Mole Day. I’m not a mole but I thought it might be good to support other animoles.

And the theme this year is AniMOLE Kingdom. That includes me too – I think.

I do have one thing in common with moles.

We both like to dig.

But we don’t have any moles living around here, so I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to celebrate.

It’s kind of hard to have a mole party when there aren’t any moles to party with.

Maybe I could change the day to National Gopher Day.

We have lots of gophers around here and they like to dig holes too.

Now all I’ve got to do is gather up some gophers and start the party.

If I can find any, that is.

I’ve never seen a gopher.

They’re always hiding in their holes.

Maybe I’ll go dig a few out. That sounds like fun.

I’ll be back in awhile. Once I’ve got some gophers.

Boy, those gophers are sure hard to come by.

What? Person, what do you mean I don’t need any gophers?

This day isn’t about digging moles?

It’s about chemistry moles?

You mean moles that put on white jackets and play around with test tubes?

It has to do with molecules?

Molecules don’t dig holes – or play with test tubes. They’re too little.

I don’t get it.

The gophers are gone and there’s too many moles.

Think I’ll just go dig a hole.

Which Gopher Wins?

We’ve had lots of rain and some snow lately and it really soaked into our normally dry ground – so now that the weather is clear again the gophers around here are having a heyday.

Mounds and holes are everywhere on my trails. One day I even found a hole right in the middle of the trail. Pretty nervy of that little guy.

But usually the digging evidence is off to the side of the trails where the ground is softer and those little guys don’t have to work so hard to get through.

I’ve never, ever seen one of those gophers on my trails. I think because I’m such a big, manly kind of dog I must make the earth shake as I walk. Those little guys sense it before I ever get near and run back down their little holes in sheer fright.

Not that I’d ever hurt a gopher. I’d just like to play with one for a little while. Or chase it into the woods. If it would only run on solid ground.

But I finally found the cleverest gopher of all. This gopher doesn’t need to run back down his hole anytime someone big comes near. This gopher really knows how to dig a hole.

This gopher has his own entrance with special armored protection.

Gopher Golf

This is new. I’ve never seen a flag on my trails before.

Look, the flag even has a number on it. I wonder what it’s here for.

Hey, I found another flag. This one has a number too.

We need to figure out why those flags are here. Maybe I should put on my Detective Dog hat again?

Oh wait, I think I’ve figured it out already.

Look at this mound here. Right near those flags. You know who makes these mounds, don’t you?

Gophers!

And I bet those gophers are up to something. I bet they’re up to a good round of gopher golf.

All I have to do is follow those flags and I bet we’ll find the gophers. And the gopher golf balls.

Come on, person. Let’s go look for those gophers.

I know we’re almost at the end of our walk, but we’ve got to go back and look. Maybe they’ll let us in on the game. I’d like to swing at a few gophers.

Hmmm. I don’t see any gophers anywhere. Or any more flags, either.

Oh. Now I know why I’m not seeing any gophers.

Those gophers took their flags and their little golf balls and clubs…

and ran them down this hole.

Guess I’ll have to swing at a gopher another day.

Who Dumped the Dirt?

Hey person, someone dumped a pile of dirt on this cactus. Why would they do that? I’m going to have to get to the bottom of this.

Look, here’s another pile.

And they tried to pile up more dirt on this other plant. At least they missed that cute little cactus over there.

Oh, no. I think the culprit went down this hole. Now how will I find out who did it? If I try to dig whoever it is out, they might go down deeper, and anyway I would be spreading more dirt around.

I think I’ll just wait here and see who comes out.
