The Magi

08 Jan
The Magi Journeying

My person says that there are a lot of Nativity scenes that show the wise men bringing gifts to the baby Jesus. She says that these wise men were probably not there at all that first night when Jesus was lying in a manger.

These wise men, called Magi, were probably astrologers. Because they studied the stars they would recognize a new star when it appeared in the sky. They knew what the star meant and came to worship the baby Jesus who was born king of the Jews. The Magi came from the east – maybe from an area which is currently in modern day Iraq.

Okay person, we have Magi and a star – but where are the animals? I’m ready to leave.

My person said to hold on. “Sigh.” She said these Magi were probably rich considering the gifts they brought along for the baby Jesus. They could most likely afford camels for their travels. Well, camels are much bigger than me, but I guess they are still animals.

Those Magi came to Israel riding on their camels and didn’t know exactly where to find Jesus, so they went to King Herod in Jerusalem. King Herod had no clue where to find Jesus, but he was very upset to hear about another king. I guess I might feel the same way if another dog took over my house.

So King Herod had to ask the chief priests and teachers of the law where the Christ was to be born. They told him the prophet Micah had said that the Christ would be born in Bethlehem.

That sneaky King Herod found out from the Magi just when the star had appeared and told them that after they found the Christ child to let him know so he could go worship him.

The Magi went on their way and the star went ahead of them and stopped over the house where Mary and Jesus were. They bowed down and worshipped Jesus and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Wow Jesus, you got some pretty awesome gifts – but did they give you any chew toys or treats?

Another wonderful Bible story, Bongo! Thanks for sharing it with us. We’re glad you got some animal action in this– camels would probably be very exciting if you happened to be standing near one 🙂

Thanks Deanna. My person says those camels are really big. I think I’d be afraid of one stepping on me.

You know I feel sure Bongo that the Magi must have animals with them, not dogs of course but maybe sheep or goats .They travelled a long way to see Jesus and would have had to make camp. Then they would be hungry so they would kill an animal for their dinner..that’s what I think anyway!

Patreciau, maybe if those Magi had sheep they had sheepdogs to take care of them.

Camels are pretty awesome animals but kinda temperamental. They spit if they are not happy and it is disgusting—trust me on this one.

Bongo, I wonder if maybe Baby Jesus got an old rag to suck or chew on? Not as good as a chew toy or squeaky, but He would need something!!! I’m always glad in the story when Mary, Joseph, and Jesus escaped King Herod! On the way to Egypt, I think the donkey shows up again…well, at least in paintings.

Oh Bongo….I’m a bit confused…Jesus was born king of the Jews ? but…Christianity and Jewry are different, aren’t they? Oops do I look fool enough not knowing the bible story? * blush* I’ll wait for more stories coming from your person!!! 🙂

Kevin, you have a very good question and one that many people don’t understand. Jesus is Jewish. The Old Testament in the Bible is the same as the Jewish Scriptures. The New Testament is about Jesus. Christianity was born out of Judaism. The Jews who do not accept Christianity are those who do not believe Jesus us the Messiah. There are many prophesies of the Messiah in the Old Testament and they point right to Jesus. My person says she hopes this helps.

Kevin, we’re glad we can help. It’s amazing how so many religions can be so similar and yet so different.

    So Bongo,

Do you think the Camels were just waiting outside and you couldn’t see them?? Maybe they had chew toys to play with while they waited?

    Have a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

Every time I think of King Herod, I think of Josh Mostel in the movie “Jesus Christ, Superstar”. Bongo, I think you would have like him too because he had some really neat toys.

Thanks Brown Dawgs. That King Herod is pretty sneaky. My person said she’s going to tell me what he’s up to in the next story.
