Distractions

24 Feb

Bongo's drool on the stairsYou see that mark there? On the stairs? You know what that is? That’s a sign of dog abuse. That’s what it is.

Here’s what happened.

Every morning when I get my person out of bed she makes me go outside before she’ll feed me. That’s bad enough right there. I think she should feed me first.

Sometimes when I go outside I get distracted by things, smells and stuff – like maybe Bubba, the cat from across the street snuck into my yard overnight – and I don’t head back into the house when my person thinks I should.

You know what she does? She goes back in the house without me and shuts the door in my face.

Okay person, I’ll change that if you insist. The door isn’t really shut in my face because I’m still out in the yard sniffing.

But then I hear it. The sound of my food bouncing into my bowl. And I come running, drooling as I go. Let me in, person!

You know what she does then? She takes her time and won’t let me in right away. She feeds Scratchy, she gets a drink of water, and finally she moseys on over to the door. In the meantime I’ve lost about a gallon of water – it’s dripping out of my mouth while I wait for food.

When she does let me in I race to my dish and gobble my breakfast. Okay, I’m feeling better now.

But if it happens again, I’m turning my person in.

    Oh, Bongo.

Sometimes Elka is super distracted out back as well. She potties on-leash, though, so if I’ve decided she’s not getting down to business, we just march back inside. No tennis ball, no tag in the backyard, nada.

Maybe you’ll go faster next time? 😉

Jen, I usually get back in the house pretty quick when I know there’s food coming. Sometimes there’s just something that I really have to check out though.

Bongo my person does the same thing. I got smart. I’ll rush out the door pretending I’m going out. Then Casey comes and runs out too. But then my person closes the door. This is the part that gets good…..I sit….the best sit ever…with my head up high looking real cute. You know the look. She melts. Works like a charm.

Jennifer, I’m always scratching at the door to get let in, hoping my person will be afraid I’ll scratch up her door. I wonder if that cute look would work better.

My drool puddle is usually right on the kitchen floor next to my placemat. Mom tries to be quick, but my drool is quicker.

Cupcake, sometimes when my person is getting me a vitamin I drool all over the kitchen floor too. She takes so long getting it out.

I discovered that my cat drools when I feed him too. But since he’s a cat he purrs at the same time. I realize when I take my time it must be an eternity for him… But, I’m sorry Bongo, I think its kind of funny.

Viciously Sweet, my person says her sister had a cat that drooled when she got loves, but this is the first she’s heard of a cat drooling while waiting for food. She thinks it’s funny too. I’m not sure I like her sense of humor.

Bongo, our pups are right there with you. They hear the carrots hitting the bowl and the musical sound of kibble mixing with it and they sit ever so patiently. Still drooling, but still. Then they hear the magical “ok!” and go flying across the kitchen floor, running into chairs and cabinets as they do so. Sometimes, us people just forget how much longer the wait is for you hungry souls!

Anastasia, it is so hard to wait for food. I’m glad I’m not the only one.

My person does the same thing to me! Lulu is a brown noser and always comes when called and goes right inside, but I want to have fun in the yard like you! No fair! – Sofie Bear

Sofie Bear, I think us dogs should unite – go on strike until our people let us in whenever we want.

Maybe if you came when she asked you she would feed you right away like you want. One of us, I won’t mention who doesn’t come right back in when called either. She lays on the driveway and just watches what’s going on, which is really nothing that early!

Lexie, Mica and Mom, most days I come in right away, but sometimes there’s something that I need to check out. You’d think my person could overlook that and let me in as soon as I’m ready – which is when I hear the food going into my bowl.

Hmmn, Bongo, I’m thinking maybe you have go on strike one morning . . . maybe tomorrow. If you don’t have to go outside first thing to ahem, you know, relieve yourself, why not stage a sit down strike. Just sit down and refuse to go outside. That’s what my dog does. I can’t budge him. That way your persons will know you are real serious about getting breakfast first thing. Pronto. Got that? Just sit down and give your sad face near your food bowl. I think drooling would be a real good acting move as well. So, give a sad face and drool! 🙂

Sunshine, that’s what I think I’ll do in the morning. Sit down, sad face, and drool. Got it!

an idea: next morning, bring your bowl to your person’s bed along with a little note “food first, walk after”. Maybe she’ll get the message!

Good idea Marina – but I need someone to help me write the note. Can you help me?

I do not know how you do it Bongo my love but whatever you write about it has me in fits of laughter. BUT..this is a very serious situation..dog abuse…If you have to report your person I will be your witness..I will stand by you every inch of the way. Fancy feeding Scratchy before you..that is anarchy and should be stopped forthwith…..

Oh no..poor Bongo…. me too, I have a dog abuse experience. My mom and granny sometimes don’t feed me directly… I mean they ask me to do some performances before feeding like ” sit” or “give me your paw” !!!! I’m drooling a lot while I’m performing! They make me look silly!*sniff sniff*
