Sometimes it’s dangerous on my trails. Today I saw something really strange.
Dive-bombing hummingbirds.
They would fly up really high – and then they would dive bomb. Flying down almost to the ground at top speed.
I got very concerned. What if they tried to dive-bomb my head.
Yikes! That could hurt!
I’m pretty brave. I can face big dogs and clawing, hissing cats. I can outrun a thunderstorm (Okay, maybe I’m not that brave.) and chase wild coyotes. But those little tiny hummingbirds could really hurt.
And I would have no defense.
I think I’m going home now. And I’m not coming back until I have on a hummingbird hat.
I don’t care what that hat looks like – as long as it protects my head from a dive-bomb attack.

Mockingbirds are worse. They would swoop down and pull the hair out of my cats tail. Mean!

The cap is a great look, but is it enough protection? You may need a helmet or a hard hat!!

We’ve got hummingbird feeders out & the males fight each other for rights to the feeders all the time. When they’re warning each other off they make this huge U loop over & over which I guess means, stay away – either that or they just like doing it. In any case Moe yells at them from the porch so I guess we’re safe…sort of?

Diane, I bet those hummingbirds don’t want to come near Moe. My person got online and found out hummingbirds actually dive-bomb when they’re courting. We only saw them do that one day.

Moe’s only the tough guy when he’s behind a window or screen. If a bird flies near him he flattens out like there’s incoming fire. That is so cool to know about the hummingbirds though. When we were watching them I was thinking – I wonder if he’s doing it just because it’s fun to do. They are amazing little speed demons.

Do know that Mockingbirds are bullies and afraid of nothing when a baby bird is in jeopardy.

Karen, my person got online and found out hummingbirds dive-bomb when they’re courting. We’ve only seen them ever do that once in all the time we’ve been on my trails. They didn’t really go after us. I guess the boy birds were just trying to impress the girl birds.

Oh, no!! Dive-bombing hummingbirds on your trail sweet Bongo. What got into those little birds anyway? We have seen bluejays and mockingbirds do that but not cute little hummers. We like your hat and we hope it works to keep those little hummers from poking your head with those sharp, pointed little beaks of theirs. Hugs and nose kisses

Chancy and Mumsy, my person checked online and found out that’s how hummingbirds court. We’ve only ever seen them do that once. I guess my head is safe. Hugs and nose kisses back to you.

Bongo, I don’t know about the cap. It does look great on you, that’s for sure, but to protect you from these Hitchcock – hummingbirds… maybe you -put on- ask Scratchy to lend a hand 🙂

Angels Whisper, that’s a good idea. I’ll put Scratchy on my head. Then the hummingbirds can dive-bomb into him and they won’t get me at all.

I think that you look quite good in the hat, Bongo! But as Cupcake said, you need to have a helmet that the hat. I hope you can find better one before long. Hmmmm…I don’t think I ever see those hummingbirds before but it sounds like the way they fly is very interesting! 🙂

Kevin, I’m keeping my eyes open for a helmet. Those hummingbirds don’t normally dive-bomb – my person found out they do this when they’re courting – but they do zip across the sky really fast. And sometimes they stop and hover right where they are. They’re so small and their wings move so fast that sometimes we hear them flying but can’t find them. They’re actually really cool, and very pretty little birds.

I think I’d be looking for a hard hat – those hummingbirds have long beaks! I remember birds pecking at my little dog when I was a wee one. Made me afraid of birds for a long time after that.

Really like the hat Bongo, looks good. I didn’t know hummingbirds will dive-bomb that is something new. We have a feeder for them but we only have two so maybe they are both girls??

Thanks Lexie and Mica. It was a surprise to my person and me to see those hummingbirds dive-bomb. There are a lot of them on my trails this year so we see them almost every day, but only once did we see them dive-bombing.
