Those Pesky Scrub Jays

01 Dec

Scrub JayWe have lots of birds on my trails, but these are one of the peskiest. I’m surprised they don’t gang up with those pesky squirrels. They’re two of a kind. They’ll hang out in a tree above you and make all kinds of obnoxious noises – hoping to get your attention. But if you even begin to get close to them they’re flying off, playing a game of keep away.

Scrub Jay

I do have to say that they have one good quality. They like to harass cats more than dogs. They try to get the cats to climb up after them – and then when that cat is just within reach – off they go.

Most adult cats know better and ignore those pesky birds, but my person told me a story about two kittens she used to have.

They climbed up a tree in the backyard trying to get at one of those pesky birds. They got way out on some of the furthest limbs, but of course they couldn’t get near that bird.

Well, that bird thought it was so funny that he told all his friends. Pretty soon there were about thirty birds around that tree harassing those two kittens out on a limb. My person had never seen so many scrub-jays in one place before.

I guess that just goes to show you, if you’re going to go out on a limb you’d better know what you’re doing. Otherwise you might become the laughing stock of the whole bird world.

That’s a great tip to remember Bongo. Those Scrub Jays sound very mischievous! Speaking of mischief, I loved seeing you under Rule #14 in Snoopy’s Mischief Master Class book! Way to go Mr. Quiet guy! LOL!

Thanks Bassetmomma. Freddie looked awful cute in Rule #1 of the Mischief Master Class book. It’s so fun to be in that book with so many of my friends.

Sketchjay, I’m glad Chestnut liked this and glad to make a new friend. I was going to ask for Chestnut’s Facebook page and then noticed you put it in another comment, so I stopped by and “Liked” his page.

Jen, you are so right. I think they have contests to see which one can be the most obnoxious.

Funny! 😀 I used to have a chipmunk come up to our sliding glass door when it was closed and pester Sephi. Pesky chipmunk never came around when the sliding glass door was open, though.

Chipmunk’s must be as bad as those pesky jays and pesky squirrels combined.

We do love seeing all those crazy birds. We have hummingbirds that dive at us

Benny & Lily, we have lots of hummingbirds here in the summer, but most of them are gone now. Maybe the jays are afraid of getting dive bombed by the hummingbirds because they seem to get more wild and crazy after the hummingbirds leave.

Hmmm…it must have been very frustrating for those kittens to not reach the pesky scrub jays!!!
Which means pesky scrub jays are much cleverer than kitties are???
P.S. I love the illustration of the scene as the two kittens look very cute! 🙂

Thanks Kevin. My person says those kittens figured it out when they got a little older and never went after those scrub jays again. At least they were able to climb back down that tree by themselves.

Bongo, the PSJays look simular to our magpies, I mean in their behavior, I think they’re funny 🙂

Angels Whisper, I think those pesky jays do act kind of like magpies. I’m sure glad we don’t have any of those around. Two kinds of pesky birds would be too much.

Nice reflexion you have done. I will have to say my cats to have carefull with those, if I even have the oportunity to see them 😉
I hope you still doing well on your trails! And don’t get harrass by them. ♥

YouKai, those pesky scrub jays just sit in the trees and make lots of noise. Most of the time they leave before we even get close. My person was surprised they stuck around long enough for her to get those pictures of them.

    Hey Bongo, Jet here.

Dude, we have blue jays that are pretty pesky, too… Poor kittens out on a limb… humiliated by avians… hmpf…

Ginger, Scratchy likes to watch those birds through the window. Maybe I’ll just push the door open a little next time one comes around.
