Strange things pop up here sometimes in the summer after it rains.
Can you see it?
Oh wait, I guess you’re just looking at me in the picture. I can’t blame you for that.
That strange thing is pretty little. It barely shows.
Is that better?
You see that little round thing next to my feet?
It’s a mushroom.
Here’s some more.
You’d never think mushrooms would grow in Arizona, but they do.
Little tiny ones grow on my trails when it’s warm and wet around here.
Our typical summer weather.
But this year I found something even more special.
This wasn’t on my trails at all.
I found it right by the street. Right near my house.
It’s way bigger than all those little mushrooms I found on my trails.
Well, except for a few I found last year – but only in one spot.
This has got to be a brand new species – one that nobody has ever found before.
So here it is.
And since I found it I’m the one that gets to name it.
This is hard. What should I call it?
Oh I know.
I found it on my street so I’m going to call it Street Mushroom.
I bet there’s no other mushroom with a name like that.

The Bongo Street Mushroom, you mean!!! 🙂

Bongo is such a humble mycologist. 😉
September 3, 2013 at 11:19 pm
Stanze, I had to make my person look that word up for me.
September 6, 2013 at 12:27 pm
lol I’m sorry, I wasn’t even sure if I made it up. 😉

Marina, you’re right. That mushroom is on my street so of course it has to be the Bongo Street Mushroom.

Benny & Lily, we found another one on my trails today. A great big puff marshmallow mushroom on a stick.

Street Mushroom is very exotic. I am not allowed to eat mushrooms. Are you?
Love and licks,
September 3, 2013 at 11:05 pm
Cupcake, my person said not to eat any mushrooms on my trails or my street because they might be poisonous. They didn’t smell that good anyway.
September 3, 2013 at 12:21 pm
It looks very pretty Bongo, but dont try eating it please. I dont know if it is edible, but dont take the chance. Sending you cyber treats to take your mind off the mushrooms.
September 3, 2013 at 11:06 pm
Susan, cyber treats sound awesome. Those mushrooms didn’t smell appetizing anyway.
September 3, 2013 at 12:53 pm
Bongo please don’t eat the mushroom!!
My dog Bailey had an adventure like yours this week, if you would like to come visit it’s
Bailey doesn’t get as many adventures as you do Bongo! And please say hello to your person!
September 3, 2013 at 11:12 pm
Sue Ann, I checked it out and it looks like Bailey got a great adventure. I have an advantage though. My trails are just a short walk from my house. And my person says hello back.
September 3, 2013 at 12:55 pm
Don’t eat it Bongo! Who knows what kind of psychedelic trip you would have – snorts. XOXO – Bacon
September 3, 2013 at 11:13 pm
Bacon, don’t worry. I have enough trips on my trails. I don’t need any mushroom trips.
September 4, 2013 at 6:07 am
snorts! That is so good my friend. I wouldn’t want you eating a shroom and then falling down a hole and visiting Alice in Wonderland – snorts. XOXO – Bacon
September 4, 2013 at 8:23 pm
That would definitely be an adventure I’ve never had before.
September 3, 2013 at 1:05 pm
Bongo, you’ll be a world famous scientist now! Wooooowoooooooo, Ku
September 3, 2013 at 11:14 pm
Ku, that would be awesome. I might have to get a scientist dog hat to go with my other hats.

Are the small ones puff balls – step on them and puffy deflate?
It looks like the larger on is attempting to copy your coat?
September 3, 2013 at 11:16 pm
Karen, I think those must be puff balls. I haven’t tried stepping on any but I’ve seen some flat ones that somebody stepped on. I bet that big one is trying to admire me from afar – since it lives not too far from my house.
September 4, 2013 at 1:31 am
Bongo, did you watering this special Street Mushroom 🙂
September 4, 2013 at 8:21 pm
Little Binky, I was good and didn’t water it. It’s the only one I’ve found on my street so I’d better be nice to it.
September 4, 2013 at 7:21 am
Your trails and streets are so mysterious!!!! Those small mushrooms are intersting….I wonder if they grow up like the one on the last picture, or they are different breed?
September 4, 2013 at 8:24 pm
Kevin, those little mushrooms stay little, but I found another big mushroom on my trails and it’s different than the one on my street.
September 13, 2013 at 6:03 pm
mushrooms? Do those pellets get bigger? Dad usually picks them up here and throw s them and they explode.. he calls them puffballs…. -Ginger
September 13, 2013 at 9:52 pm
Ginger, those pellets just stay tiny. I think they might be mini-puffballs. You know, kind of like mini-marshmallows.
