There’s something strange here on the ground.
I’m not sure what it is, but it’s little and round.
It’s not a rock.
There are lots of little round rocks on my trails, but this isn’t one of them.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this little round thing before.
Guess I’d better check it out.
.
.
It has a smell to it.
Some kind of animal smell.
But it’s a smell that usually doesn’t come this close.
It comes from a distance. From up in the trees.
What kind of bird would put their nest on the ground?
Well, I guess the quail hang out on the ground a lot, but even the baby quail would barely fit in this little nest.
It must belong to some hummingbirds.
They’re the only birds small enough around here.
I’d better warn them.
If they lay their eggs in this nest on the ground somebody might eat them.
Like me.
Or maybe those up to no good javelina.
They’d probably like some dessert after eating all those prickly pear cactus.
But why would those hummingbirds put this little nest on the ground in the first place?
What, person?
It’s been really windy lately?
You think they’re trying to protect their nest from the wind?
They’d better watch it.
Those javelina are scarier than the wind.

Well if I was a bird the last place to build my nest would be on the ground, and also if I built it in a tree then not enough glue was attached to stick it to the branch..maybe it was a ‘try out’ by a learner bird. If you were a new bird you still have to learn how to build a nest…better luck next time Mrs Birdie
love to you Bongo my darling..hope you ard being good boy

Patrecia, I bet that hummingbird that was stalking me the other day was the one that built this nest.

WOW – that is totally neat. I’ve never seen a bird’s nest up front and personal. Cool. That’s where those little squeaky things live. XOXO – Bacon

Bacon, I don’t know what baby hummingbirds sound like, but the grown up ones – if you can call them that since they don’t grow much – make all kinds of strange sounds.

Cupcake, you might get a few feathers and pieces of straw stuck in your mouth. But if you insist, I can send it to you.

I do hope the wind will stop and they can find somewhere a little better

Dalton, that would definitely be good for the baby birds.

Those hummingbirds should immediately move thier nest in somewhere much safer place…or like you said javelina might attack it! You have to warn them, Bongo!

Kevin, I don’t think those hummingbirds want to listen to me. They’re always either zooming by or sitting in the top of a tree making funny noises.

Oh, no! Sweet Bongo do you think the wind blew that next from the tree? Poor mama bird will have to start all over and build another one. We hope you can warn that mama bird. Hugs and nose kisses

Chancy and Mumsy, I’m sure glad I don’t have to build a house twice. Hugs and nose kisses back to you.
