Snow Trek

Snow HikeSquishy mud, crunchy snow, and all of it cold. I love going out on the trail on snow days. I have to admit that my person makes better crunches though. She has bigger feet.

I got lots of sniffing time in – and there were some good smells – because my person kept stopping to take pictures. She said she was hoping she would get better lighting, but she kept stopping anyway. It was kind of nice – getting to stop that much. My person hardly ever lets me do that.

We met lots of people on the trail and a couple dogs. They were all out enjoying the snow like we were. One man even gave my person a heart. I thought he should give it to me, but I guess my person needs a heart too. I think she should have given it to me after I was good with those dogs though. I didn’t growl or anything.

Back to my sniffing now. I’m doing it for my person – so she can keep taking pictures.

Haunted Hamburger

Ribs at the Haunted HamburgerMy people left me for awhile today. They said they went to a place called Jerome. I don’t really care what they did, but what I do care about is what my younger person smelled like when they came home. He smelled like scrumptious, juicy, flavorful, tasty, water is pouring out of my mouth, barbeque ribs.

Next time you go to a place like that people, please take me with you. I’ll behave. I promise. All you have to do is give me some of those ribs.

My people said there were no dogs allowed where they went. It was a restaurant called the Haunted Hamburger. The what? How can a hamburger be haunted?

They said they didn’t know about the hamburger being haunted, but the town of Jerome is famous for its hauntings. You’d think they could find some ribs in a safer place.

Well I decided that maybe I didn’t need to go with my people to such a spooky place, but the least they could do if they were going there anyway was to bring me a doggie bag.

My person showed me some pictures that she took in Jerome.

Devil’s Kitchen

Bongo on the TrailI’m beat. My person did it to me again. We went out for our walk, but when we got to the place we normally turn back we went the other way. We go that way sometimes, but not very often. We walked along for awhile on the trail and then my person took me on another trail. She said she’d never been on this trail before, but she was taking me someplace special. She’d been there, but she’d taken her car and walked on a much shorter trail. We could have gone in the car. I wouldn’t mind.

This new trail wasn’t bad. It was mostly downhill so we could go fast. I tried to follow a couple coyote trails that I smelled, but my person said it wasn’t the right way. How did she know? She said she’d never been on this trail before.

We didn’t see many people on the way, but I heard some strange voices coming out of Coffee Pot Rock. They were all tinny and echoey. I didn’t know that that rock could talk.

Coffee Pot Rock

Well the rock got quiet when we walked around its base. I guess we scared it. I almost didn’t recognize the rock. It looks different when you’re that close.

The trail went past a really cool house.

One little part of the trail was actually a road and we had to get out of the way when a couple vehicles came by. It was hard enough to walk up and down that road. All steep and rocky. Those vehicles were going very slow.

We finally got to the special place. I ran right up to the edge to check it out. It was nothing but a big hole in the ground. My person said it’s called Devil’s Kitchen. An underground part became hollow first and then the whole thing fell in.

After checking out that hole we headed back home. My person didn’t tell me we were going to have to go uphill.

Almost Up the Chimney

My person totally confused me today. Normally when we go for a walk we make a big loop – going out on one trail and back home on another. Today we got to the place where we usually turn around and go back – but we didn’t go back. My person took me on a trail I’ve never been on before and we kept walking further away from our house. I wasn’t sure what to think, but it was fun finding new smells. My person likes to drag me along when I’ve stopped for a good smell, but this time I kept trying to drag her more than she was dragging me. She kept stopping and getting her camera out. I’d be walking along and suddenly come to the end of my leash.

My person took me to a rock called Chimney Rock. You can probably figure out why it’s called that.

Chimney Rock

To get there we had to walk through some dry washes. They only have water in them when it rains.

When we got around the side of Chimney Rock it looked different. Instead of one big rock it looked like three.

Chimney Rock from the Side

We got to the top of the trail and it went back down the other side, so we stopped and rested before coming back the way we’d gone up. Someone was nice enough to leave a stick up there for me. I tried to get my person to throw it so I could go after it, but she said I might fall down the steep hill. I couldn’t convince her otherwise.

My person kept stalling on the way home – getting her camera out for more pictures.

It’s a good thing they had the trail marked. I could find it by the smell, but I think my person might have gotten lost.

I guess It was good my person took her time, or we wouldn’t have seen this.

Tiny Flute Player

Tiny person on top of Sugarloaf

Tiny Person on Top of Sugarloaf

When my person took me for my walk on the trails tonight I could hear music. My person said the music came from a flute and it sounded like Native American flute music. She said that around here it could be a real Native American playing the flute or it could be a Native American wanna be.

We saw a tiny person standing on the top of Sugarloaf, the big rock my person and I climbed up a few days ago. I think that tiny person might have been the one playing the flute. My person wouldn’t let me go up there. She said it would be dark before we could get back down and besides, my younger person was waiting for his dinner. Me too.

When we got to the side of Sugarloaf we could see more tiny people up there and a person wearing a skirt passed us on the trail. People hardly ever wear skirts on a hiking trail, but they wear them to flute concerts.

Maybe they were having a full moon ceremony. The coyotes around here have full moon ceremonies, so I guess the people could have them too.

Exploring Sugarloaf

Ever since my blogging friend Bassa climbed up a mountain awhile back I’ve been wanting to climb a mountain. My person finally said it had gotten cool enough today so we could go. The mountain we climbed isn’t really a mountain – it’s a big rock called Sugarloaf.

My person got a little upset with me when she had to drag me away from the stuff I was sniffing. She said she was hoping I would pull her up the mountain. When we went back down I did try to pull her, but she wouldn’t go for it and kept walking at the same pace. A dog just can’t win.

At first I had fun sniffing all the new dog smells and didn’t care much about the scenery.

Here are some pictures of Sugarloaf – the big rock we climbed.

When we got back home I was concerned for a bit. Scratchy didn’t want to climb the rock with us and he was hanging out at home. I was thirsty. What if he drank all the water in my water dish?

Click of the Camera

Too CloseSince I started writing this blog my person has been taking lots of pictures of me. It’s really fun. Sometimes she gets down on the floor so she’s at the same level as me, but what I like the best are the sounds the camera makes.

When my person opens the camera case there is a special ripping kind of sound that always gets my attention. My person says that’s the sound of Velcro tearing apart. Whatever it is, if I’m not in the room already I always come running.

The next best sound is the click the camera makes when my person takes a picture. I think that click means go to the camera and climb all over my person. My person laughs when I do this, but then she makes me go back and do the same pose all over again. I don’t get it.
