Slacking on the Job

Bongo on the trail with his leash stretched behind himYou see what’s attached to me?

No, no! Not the leash.

Well, I guess you can’t see what’s attached to my leash, but you can probably figure it out.

My person is on the other end of it.

It’s kind of a burden sometimes but it’s one of my jobs.

I’ve got to take her out so she can get her exercise.

I thought all dogs had this on their job description.

.

But I found one today who doesn’t seem to think so.

Brown dog hiding in the bushes

Who is that hiding in the bushes?

I wonder if she ditched her person by going places her person couldn’t follow.

Brown Dog

Here she comes.

Hey brown dog, if you’d stay on the trail like me you could be doing your dogly duty and giving your person exercise.

Brown Dog on the trail

Say what?

Don’t tell me what to do.

It’s a little late to be hitting the trail now.

Where is your person anyway?

Brown dog walking away

Fine. Be that way.

What is it with these personless brown dogs anyway?

It seems to be turning into an epidemic around here.

New Trail

Two Rock Piles marking a trailAs I walked along on my trails I saw something unusual.

New trail markers – one on each side of a trail.

Where there had been no trail the day before.

Strange. I didn’t know trails could just pop up like that.

Well, if there’s a new trail I guess I’d better explore it.

.

.

Bongo walking past the markers

So I went between the markers and started to wander down the trail.

It was such a new trail that I thought it was going to fizzle out.

It almost did – but it didn’t.

And you know where that trail took me.

Right to that place where I found those aliens the other day.

The ones that had turned to stone. I posted about it here.

But something had happened. The aliens were gone.

This is really serious because I thought I was safe.

I thought that since those aliens had turned to stone they were stuck and couldn’t go anywhere.

Now I don’t know where they are. They could pop out at any minute and I have no idea if they are friendly aliens or not.

Aliens could be lurking anywhere on my trails – ready to jump out and get me.

I don’t know what to do, but I might need your help.

Those aliens look like piles of stones, so if you see anything suspicious could you let me know?

I don’t want to be caught unawares.

Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day

Bongo splashing the waterDo you know what today is?

It’s one of my favorite days.

Well, it’s going to be one of my favorite days. I didn’t know about this holiday last year.

Today is Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day.

I was really looking forward to splashing…

.

.

Bongo Getting One More Swim

Or maybe even swimming and splashing.

As long as I could get my people all wet.

But here’s what happened.

I went to my favorite puddle…

Bongo at the place where a puddle used to be

And it was gone!

Without my puddle how could I celebrate this special holiday?

So I talked my people into taking me on a new trail.

Bongo and his younger person on a trail

One that I’ve never been on before.

And I heard that it ended up at a creek.

So we wandered around and up and down and finally we ended up…

Bongo standing at the top of the world

At the top of the world!

I sat there with my younger person…

Bongo and his younger person looking at the view

And it didn’t seem like he was going to move.

Bongo and younger person sitting and looking at the view

I’ve got to figure something out – because now I know where the puddle is.

Bongo getting restless

And I’m going to find a way to get there.

Bongo looking the other way

Over there looks like a good place to start.

Bongo heading down the cliff

Yup, this way’s going to get me there.

Bongo part way down the cliff

Hey guys, this is the right way. Come on down here!

Bongo being made to climb back up

What do you mean, I’ve got to climb back up?

Bongo back on top

You’re missing the whole point.

I haven’t splashed in a puddle yet.

When are my people ever going to learn?

Missing Person

Detective DogYesterday my investigation was a bust.

I guess even Detective Dog can’t be perfect all the time.

But today I have another investigation.

I’m sure I’ll get to the bottom of this one.

You see, there is a personless dog that sometimes runs around my neighborhood.

.

.

.

.

Brown dog near a road

All the dogs in my neighborhood have people that they take on walks with them, except this poor dog.

I really have to admire this dog though.

I mean, how many dogs would go on walks if it wasn’t for needing to give their people exercise?

Giving your people their exercise is such a good motivator, but this dog goes on walks by himself.

He even does some jogging.

Brown dog jogging

But where are this dog’s people? Why aren’t they letting him take them on walks?

That’s what I need to investigate.

I almost had an answer right from the dog’s mouth.

I saw him a ways off on my trails and then he started following me home.

I was all ready to befriend him. He really looks like he could use some friends.

But my person totally blew it for me.

Because every time she walks toward this dog he runs in the opposite direction.

Dog running away

My person is not doing a very good job.

I think I may have to fire her and hire myself a new assistant.

I bet this dog needs a job.

Trail Arrow

Bongo checking out a pointing rockHmmm. This is the place that my person has decided is our turnaround point.

We usually go out this far on my trails and then we head back when we get here.

Most of the time I want to keep going, but my person won’t let me.

She always has an excuse.

She’s too busy, or it’s too cold, or whatever else she can come up with.

She pulls that busy one most of the time though.

But there’s something different here today.

I’ve never seen this here before.

.

There’s an arrow here pointing further out on my trails.

That’s got to mean something.

Today’s the day we keep on trekking.

I’m following the arrow!

Bongo walking off in the direction the rock is pointing

Hey person, come on. This way!

What do you mean, what am I doing?

I’m following directions.

I’ve watched you driving before.

When there’s a sign pointing a certain way you follow it.

Well, there’s a sign pointing this way on my trails.

We have to follow it.

***

Person, I don’t believe it!

You’re going to ignore this sign and make me go back?

You know, you’re taking your chances.

I sure hope the trail police don’t find you and give you a ticket for failure to follow directions.

Found Out

Bongo and TobyHey Toby, hide me. Here she comes.

It’s my person!

Oh, hi person. Fancy meeting you out here on my trails.

You weren’t supposed to know that I go for walks with Toby when you’re gone – I mean, this is the first time I’ve ever gone for a walk with Toby when you weren’t here.

What a coincidence that you would come out on my trails at the very same time I was out with Toby.

What do you mean, you were looking for me?

There’s no way you could know I was gone because you weren’t home.

Well anyway, you found me. Does this mean I get another walk?

You haven’t had your walk yet today person. I’d better take you. You need your exercise.

It doesn’t matter if it gets dark. I don’t need to see to know where I’m going.

Person, you should start checking out all the messages around here like I do. Then you could find your way no matter how dark it gets.

Hey Toby, wait! Just because my person showed up doesn’t mean you have to leave.

Toby leaving Bongo

Toby, come back! Come back!

Now look what you’ve done person.

Next time you come looking for me could you try to not find me so fast?

Walking’s not an Option

Bongo looking at the viewLately I’ve been wanting to go on a different trail – it’s a little longer than the way we usually go on my trails.

But my person always says she’s too busy, or it’s too hot, or she comes up with any number of excuses.

Today it was cloudy and cooler, and my person didn’t have bunches of stuff to do, so we got to go on that trail.

We were having a great time – until I heard it.

Thunder!

Over there – and that way too!

We were surrounded!

Person, why did you want to go on this trail? We could have been almost home by now.

There was only one direction to go – and my person wouldn’t let me go that way.

Okay, fine. Then we’re not going at all.

Bongo holding his ground

Bongo refusing to move

It became a game of tug of war.

Until my collar came off.

Then my person did something really strange.

She walked to the end of my her leash, sat on the ground, and started taking pictures of me.

Bongo reluctantly walking

I like the sound her camera makes. Eventually I walked to where she sat.

Bongo Profile

Then she moved back to the end of her leash, and made me walk to her again.

Bongo looking at red rocks

Bongo walking toward the camera

Then she did it all over again.

Bongo walking, Thunder Mountain behind him

My person thinks I’m afraid of this thunder, but I’ve been thinking. Sometimes I complain too much when she stops all the time to take pictures. I think I’ll be nice to her today and let her take all the pictures she wants.

And just to prove I was doing it to be nice to her, when we got past the part with all the best scenery, I started walking with her again.

Texting on the Trail

A cell phone and Bongo looking boredDo you see something wrong with this picture? Cause I sure do.

It’s hot out today. Really hot.

So what does my person do?

She dilly dallies on our walk because she’s texting.

Come on, person. I like my walks, but when it’s this hot out I just want to travel the trails and get back home where it’s cool inside.

But my person was really bad today because when she wasn’t texting she was taking pictures of really dumb things.

Fuzzy Caterpillar

Like caterpillars.

I don’t know what this caterpillar is doing in the middle of my trails anyway. Maybe turning itself into a tasty treat.

I’ve never tried fried caterpillars before.

That caterpillar didn’t look done yet, so my person found even more dumb things to take pictures of.

Red Berries

Berries.

And I don’t think these berries are good for eating – even if they are cooked.

And by this time I’m just dragging.

I’m dying of thirst.

I think I’m going to drop any second now.

Bongo looking too hot

Did I do it?

Did I make you feel sorry enough for me?

I hope so, because somebody’s got to call the animal abuse people and turn my person in.

And while I’m waiting for those animal abuse people to show up I think I’ll go home to my air conditioned house and get a nice cool drink of water.

You can tell those people to look for me and my person there.

I’ll be home in about a minute.

After a Rain

Bongo trying to go down another trailEarlier today we had a bunch of thunder and some rain, but things had calmed down.

So my person and I decided to go for a walk.

Because of the rain everything smelled fresh and good, and the rain and clouds had cooled the air.

Rather than sweltering in the heat like we’ve been doing the last few days, it felt refreshing out in the cooler temperature.

This was turning into one of the best walks I’ve been on in a long time.

But then it happened.

First it was just a few drops of rain.

I can handle that.

But then I saw it.

A big flash of lightning.

And you know what comes after that.

Thunder!

I hate thunder. I’m deathly afraid of it.

Fortunately we were right at the beginning of a trail heading into the wash.

And it was the opposite direction of that thunder.

It’s a cool trail too, because you have to climb over big rocks when you get into the wash there.

But my person didn’t get it. She said we weren’t going that way.

I insisted.

Bongo refusing to budge

I lost.

But that thunder kept getting worse. And it came from the very direction we were headed.

My person says we have to go through this stuff to get home.

But I’m sure we can still get home if we head in another direction.

Ocotillo All Over

Bongo and OcotilloLast year my person and I took an extra long walk on trails that we hardly ever go on, because my person said that was the only place on my trails where the ocotillo grow.

Well, she lied.

Because we went on a trail that we sometimes go on – but the last time we went on it there was a sign on the part that goes back to our house saying it was closed. The sign said they wanted more cactus to grow on it – or something like that.

And besides that there were two people cuddling with each other this time.

I would have gone right up to those people and got some loves too, but my person said we could take the long way back.

The long way goes parallel (I don’t know what that word is – my person made me use it) to my regular trail, but it’s higher up the hill. My person says she hasn’t been on it in a very long time and I’m not sure if I’ve been on it at all. At least it doesn’t smell familiar.

So we were walking along on this long way trail and there they were.

Bunches of ocotillo just hanging out on the side of the hill.

Two ocotillo on the side of a hill

They were even blooming with their little red flowers on top.

Close up of an ocotillo plant

I’m still not sure why my person cares about these things though. I mean, look how tall and skinny they are.

Ocotillo in front of Sugarloaf

If I was that skinny my person would probably take me to the vet for treats and loves.

Ocotillo at the edge of Sugarloaf

I sure hope my person doesn’t try to take some of my treats and bring them up here to these ocotillo plants to fatten them up.

Ocotillo with trees in the background

I think I’d better head back home now so I can keep a close eye on my treats.

Oh no, I forgot.

Cactus Garden

There’s a tame ocotillo across the street at my neighbor dog Toby’s house.

Toby, quick! Hide your treats!
