They’re Back

Bongo on the trailThey’re back.

They haven’t been hanging out on my trails for a long time.

But they’ve come back.

And that’s not good.

They’re not welcome on my trails.

Not ever.

I might have to go after them.

Find them and tell them to stay off my trails.

I bet I could get some of my dog friends to help.

And some of my people friends too.

Nobody likes them around.

They’re always up to no good.

And all it would take is a little bit of thoughtfulness.

A tiny bit of extra work.

.

But no, that’s too much for them.

I guess you can’t expect much from such ugly creatures.

Bongo looking at litter on the trail

These litter bugs are never going to amount to anything.

Bongo sniffing a rock with litter on it

Guess I’d better check for clues as to where these litter bugs are hiding.

Oh wait, I forgot something.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

No one escapes from Detective Dog.

Stack on Stack

Bongo sniffing a stack of rocks on the trailCheck this out.

You see those rocks that are covered with wire?

Well, those are supposed to be there.

They mark the trail for people who don’t know where it is and can’t smell it.

If people were like us dogs they’d smell their way along the trail and they wouldn’t need trail markers at all.

But apparently, instead of not needing any markers, someone needed extra markers – because they stacked extra rocks on top of the ones that are supposed to be there.

And then to make sure nobody missed them, they shone a light right on them.

I’ve got to figure out how they did that light thing.

So while I was still deep into my investigation…

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

…I came back the next day and the mystery had deepened.

I mean heightened.

Bongo sniffing a taller stack of rocks on the trail

There were more rocks on the stack.

And the light was still there.

***

I’ve got to figure out that light thing.

Maybe I can get it to shine on me.

I’d love to be in the spotlight.

They’re Gone!

Bongo checking out the missing puddleThis is terrible! Just terrible!

Remember how I found tadpoles in my puddle yesterday?

Well, today I went to visit them and someone had taken my puddle and the tadpoles.

Who would steal a puddle and a bunch of tadpoles?

I can’t imagine anyone doing such a thing.

But somebody did.

.

I’m going to have to get my Detective Dog hat on and investigate this.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

Let’s see.

First clue.

That sun is trying to hide.

Sun setting behind rocks

I wonder if it’s sneaking off with my puddle and those tadpoles.

I’ll know by morning.

If the sun doesn’t show up then I’ll know it’s guilty.

***

Or maybe it’s this butterfly.

Yellow butterfly

Alright butterfly, fess up!

I know you did it.

You probably took off with those tadpoles one at a time and hid them somewhere.

Wherever that puddle went to. That’s where you hid them.

Oh, wait a minute.

That butterfly must have had an accomplice.

It may have been able to hide those tadpoles, but I don’t think it could move the puddle.

I’d better do some more searching.

Sniffing former tadpoles

This black stuff where my puddle used to be has an interesting smell.

It smells just like – just like…

Tadpoles!

Okay, now I’ve got something new to solve.

What do you do with a bunch of flat tadpoles?

How Weird Can it Get?

Bongo with Detective Dog hat covering his eyesThe mystery is getting so deep I’m having trouble keeping my Detective Dog hat on.

All week my person has been leaving me and talking about weird animals.

What is she doing?

.

.

.

.

.

I think I should be informed.

Tarantula crawling up an arm

Or maybe not.

Is there something crawling up my leg?

The Weird Mystery Deepens

Detective DogI had to put on my Detective Dog hat to start investigating these weird animals my person has been talking about.

The mystery is getting deeper and deeper.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Snake over shoulders

What kind of a weird animal is this?

Decorating the Cactus

Prickly pear cactus with gum on itLook at this!

Somebody’s decorating the cactus on my trails.

And it isn’t even Christmas.

Oh, I know.

It’s almost Easter and this is kind of an Eastery color.

It must be an Easter decoration.

I saw a bunny today. Maybe it was the Easter Bunny coming to decorate.

But wait.

Is this really an Easter decoration?

Gum on prickly pear cactus

This looks like it might be a balloon.

A balloon that had the bad luck of landing on these pricklers and popping.

Maybe I should investigate this and find out what’s really going on.

Bongo looking like he wants something done about the rocks across the trail

Hey person, can you go get my Detective Dog hat for me?

I’ve got an important investigation and I don’t have time to get it myself.

What do you mean, I don’t need my Detective Dog hat?

What clue?

You’ve got a clue for me?

Three sticks of gum

What kind of a clue is that?

If you won’t get my Detective Dog hat for me I guess I’m going to have to get it myself.

I’ve got some serious investigating to do.

And I don’t think I’m going to ask my person to help.

What’s the Mystery?

Bongo sniffing a bushWhat mystery?

Where?

I met one of my neighbors on my trails today and he said there was a mystery.

I’m trying to figure out what he’s talking about.

How can Detective Dog solve a mystery if he doesn’t know what it is?

Maybe I’ll figure it out if I put on my Detective Dog hat.

.

.

.

.

Bongo with Detective Dog hat covering his eyes

Okay, where’s that mystery?

My neighbor was talking about what?

The mystery of the clouds?

If they’re not on my trails and I can’t smell them, then it must not be a mystery worthy of Detective Dog’s time.

Besides, what’s so mysterious about clouds?

Strange cloud shapes?

Wind blown clouds over Chimney Rock

Strange shaped clouds

Strange shaped clouds near the sun

I’m leaving the mystery of the strange cloud shapes to my neighbor.

I’m heading back inside. It’s awfully windy out here.

Manzanita Mystery

Bongo in front of the bush with berriesMy trails seem to be full of mysteries lately.

I’ve been checking for clues everywhere.

So while I was checking for clues on the last mystery, I discovered a new mystery.

A Detective Dog’s work is never done.

.

.

.

.

Detective Dog

I might have to do some modeling and have my person take some new Detective Dog pics before I wear my hat out.

Besides, I always get extra treats when I model.

Okay, back to the mystery.

It’s a Manzanita mystery.

Because baby Manzanita berries always start out green.

Manzanita Berries

Like this.

And most of the new berries on my trails are coming out green.

They usually get some rosy color later, but when they first appear they’re green.

But I found some berries that just had to be different.

As a matter of fact, even their blossoms were different.

Pink Manzanita Blossoms

They had pink blossoms.

All the blossoms on the other bushes were white.

And when these berries popped out they weren’t green at all.

Red manzanita berries

They were red.

Red manzanita berries

So I started investigating to find out why these berries, and these only, were different than the rest.

And you know what I discovered when I looked around the other side of the berries?

Red and green manzanita berries

The berries are red on one side – and green on the other.

These berries are not so different after all.

It’s all a front.

And the Clues Lead to…

Bongo and a rock pileI was walking along the wash on my trails today, like I do almost every day – when I saw it.

Rock piles have been showing up everywhere and here was yet another one.

One of these days every rock on my trails will be part of a pile.

This might cause a serious problem.

If one of those rock piles falls over, a lizard might get smashed.

Or a rabbit.

Or maybe even a dog!

I decided I’d better get on my Detective Dog hat…

.

.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

And look for clues.

And I found them.

Clues, that is.

I discovered that I’d better watch my step…

An eye drawn on a rock

Because someone is keeping an eye on me.

And they obviously know my secret identity.

I found an S on my trails the other day…

S's drawn on a rock

And now here are more.

They obviously know that I’m Super Dog.

But they also know…

A star and crescent moon drawn on a rock

That I’m the star of the show.

***

And here it is.

The final clue.

I know everybody’s been waiting anxiously to find out who’s been building all these rock piles.

Strange animal face drawn on a rock

Now all I have to do is find this culprit.

A New Clue

Rock piles and BongoFor the last couple days I’ve been investigating a strange phenomenon on my trails.

The emergence (I’m not sure what that word means, but it sounds good.) of rock piles everywhere on my trails.

I’m sure that somebody has been turning boys and other living creatures into piles of rocks.

But I haven’t been able to figure out who is doing it.

And it’s really kind of scary, I mean, whoever it is could turn me into a pile of rocks at any time.

And if I don’t know who’s doing it, I might not see them coming.

.

But today I came across another clue.

While I was out investigating…

Wait, wait!

I can’t do any investigations without my Detective Dog hat.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

There, that’s better.

Like I said, while I was out investigating I came across another clue.

I still don’t know who the culprit is, but now I know how he disguises himself.

Because I stepped back to see if I could get a different perspective (Wow! This Detective Dog hat really increases my vocabulary.) on things and I saw something I hadn’t seen before.

Small rainbow near the rock piles

Do you see it?

That culprit is still hanging about.

Look closer. He’s there.

That culprit is the one disguised as a rainbow.

Don’t ever trust a rainbow again – at least not one that hangs around rock piles.
