ROAD CLOSED

Wait a minute! What is this Road Closed sign doing here?

Bongo and a Road Closed sign

This is really bad.

It’s not even a road.

That’s the entrance to my trails!

Bongo and Road Closed sign a trailhead

Oh, this must be why they closed it.

They didn’t want my person to make me wait while she took flower pictures.

Desert Flowers

But she did it anyway.

***

Well, I guess it’s a good thing dogs are still allowed on the Road Closed.

Because I found out why it’s closed.

Bongo in his puddle

My puddle’s back!

It’s been missing for a very long time.

Those Road Closed people must have not wanted anyone else to find it.

Bongo in the puddle

I wonder if the water tastes as good as last time it was here.

What Did I do with My Summer Vacation?

Bongo on the trail with flowersThis is ridiculous! My last post right before this one has snow in it.

Right now it’s so hot that if snow showed up it would sizzle away.

So I’m sneaking on the computer while my person isn’t looking and writing a new post.

Besides, today is my blogiversary.

Four years of blogging.

Well, it would have been four years if I’d actually been blogging the last few months.

So, since I haven’t posted since the snow was on the ground, and the kids who live near me are already back in school I thought I’d do a “What did I do with my Summer Vacation” kind of post.

Oh. What did I do?

Oh yeah. I got to hang out some with my little buddy.

Bongo and his buddy in dog jail

It wasn’t me. It’s his fault we’re in jail.

***

And my puddle came back!

And the tadpoles came with it.

Puddle with tadpoles

I’ve been watching those tadpoles grow for awhile, but for some reason my person won’t let me get in the puddle with them. No fair!

Oh yeah, and there were those two times in the dog hotel when my person went off without me.

Bongo in a jeep

But the best time I had all summer was when my person’s friend invited her to go to the creek with her – and then she invited me along too.

Bongo swimming in a creek

Bongo and a friend in the creek

Bongo and a log at the creek

There was only one problem.

Next time we need to go to a creek that has smaller sticks.

Transformed Puddle

Bongo sniffing a bush with snowy rocks behind him

I made my person go for a walk with me in the rain today.

It was fun. There were streams everywhere.

But I was so startled by one stream that my person actually let me do a blog post for the first time in a long time.

Well, maybe it was because her class got cancelled because there’s snow where her school is.

Anyway, here it is!

Bongo and a stream among the rocks

My puddle is no longer a puddle.

It has transformed into a stream.

Bongo looking at a pile of foam in the water

On second thought, I think it’s a bathtub.

It’s got a natural sponge – and bubbles.

Bongo playing with the foam

Do you think this puddle will get me clean?

The Best Way to End the Year

Bongo playing in the snow

Finally, my person is letting me post again.

I posed for so many pictures today that she didn’t know what else to do.

Anyway, this was the best way to end the year – and the only time all year I had snow to play in.

Bongo dragging a frisbee in the snow

One of my favorite things to do is drag a Frisbee through the snow.

Bongo looking for his frisbee in the snow

Now where did that Frisbee go?

Bongo in the snow with a frisbee in his mouth

Here it is!

I found it.

Gizmo peeking out the door

Hey Gizmo, come out here!

This is so much fun!

Bongo standing in the snow with a defiant look

Are you serious, Gizmo?

There is no way I’m coming back in the house.

Well, maybe – if I can go out the other door and head to my trails.

Bongo sniffing a snowman

Hey, who is this invading my front yard?

Looks like some kind of alien or something.

All I can say is, you’d better not be here when I get back –

 -or I’m turning you yellow.

Bongo sniffing a bush in the snow

Speaking of yellow, there’s got to be some yellow snow around here.

They tell me it carries the best messages.

Bongo sniffing another bush in the snow

Nope.

There’s no yellow snow here either.

Agave plants covered in snow

These snow creatures must have eaten it all.

Bongo in his puddle that is almost covered in snow

Hey, what happened to my puddle?

It’s changed.

I guess not everybody likes snow the way I do.

I hope you pop out of it soon, puddle.

Bongo standing in the snow

Are you coming people?

Bongo on a snowy trail looking back

Come on!

Don’t worry about that puddle.

It’ll get over it.

Bongo waiting for his younger person to throw a snowball

Finally!

Okay, throw the ball.

I’m ready.

Bongo watching his younger person with a snowball

I see that ball.

C’mon, throw it!

Bongo in the snow with a sad look

What do you mean, our walk is over?

Happy New Year everybody!

What a Difference a Day Can Make

Bongo on the trailYesterday was the worst day ever!

All day long there was thunder, thunder, thunder.

I didn’t dare take my person for a walk.

She would have gotten scared and run off for sure.

The thunder finally stopped at night, but the rain kept coming.

All night long it rained – and even into the morning.

But finally, everything changed.

My people left me – well, that’s another story – but while they were gone my neighbor dog Toby came and busted me out of dog jail and we went for a walk together.

Finally, my people came back home.

I got to show my person how much nicer things were on my trails.

The sun had come bursting through the clouds, the rain had cooled things down, the air was clean and fresh, and the hummingbirds darted here and there because there wasn’t even any wind.

And everywhere I stuck my nose…

Bongo sniffing some grass

…there were great sniffs.

Bongo sniffing some rocks

And more great sniffs.

Bongo in his puddle

My puddle was full.

Bongo under a juniper tree

I even found a tree that was willing to scratch my back.

Bongo sniffing the base of a bush

Oh, and did I remember to tell you how many great sniffs I found?

A day sure can make a difference.

They’re Gone!

Bongo checking out the missing puddleThis is terrible! Just terrible!

Remember how I found tadpoles in my puddle yesterday?

Well, today I went to visit them and someone had taken my puddle and the tadpoles.

Who would steal a puddle and a bunch of tadpoles?

I can’t imagine anyone doing such a thing.

But somebody did.

.

I’m going to have to get my Detective Dog hat on and investigate this.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

Let’s see.

First clue.

That sun is trying to hide.

Sun setting behind rocks

I wonder if it’s sneaking off with my puddle and those tadpoles.

I’ll know by morning.

If the sun doesn’t show up then I’ll know it’s guilty.

***

Or maybe it’s this butterfly.

Yellow butterfly

Alright butterfly, fess up!

I know you did it.

You probably took off with those tadpoles one at a time and hid them somewhere.

Wherever that puddle went to. That’s where you hid them.

Oh, wait a minute.

That butterfly must have had an accomplice.

It may have been able to hide those tadpoles, but I don’t think it could move the puddle.

I’d better do some more searching.

Sniffing former tadpoles

This black stuff where my puddle used to be has an interesting smell.

It smells just like – just like…

Tadpoles!

Okay, now I’ve got something new to solve.

What do you do with a bunch of flat tadpoles?

They’re Back

Bongo next to a bit of his puddleWhat do you mean, I can’t step into my puddle?

Not even this little bitty part of it?

You always let me step in it before.

What’s wrong with today?

I might step on them?

I might step on what?

.

Tadpoles and bubbles in a puddle

You think I might pop those bubbles?

Since when did you care about a few bubbles?

Not the bubbles?

Then what?

Oh, they’re back.

They were here last year.

Tadpoles in a puddle

The tadpoles are back.

This is two years in a row that my puddle has had tadpoles.

I can’t wait till they turn into tiny little toads and hop away.

Because if I try to drink my puddle water now it might tickle my tongue.

The Rain Changes Everything

Bongo looking away from a prickly pear blossomIt rained last night.

Really hard.

For a long time.

It’s been a very long time since we had rain.

So today when I went out on my trails, everything looked different.

The first different thing I found was my girlfriend Lucy.

The rain must have brought her out, because I haven’t seen her in a very long time.

And then I saw…

Hey person, look over there.

No, not that direction.

There’s nothing for you to take pictures of that you would be interested in looking at in that direction.

***

There have been no flowers on my trails for awhile now.

It’s been nice.

.

But a late blooming prickly pear popped out after the rain and of course my person had to take a picture.

Prickly pear blossom

At least there were only two blossoms on all of my trails so I got my person moving along fairly quickly.

And then I saw it!!!

My puddle!

Bongo by his puddle

My puddle had returned!

It’s been so long since I’ve seen my puddle that I almost forgot about it.

But my person said we couldn’t stay forever – it was getting dark.

So we saw a few ho hum things on our way back from my puddle.

Javelina tracks in the mud

Javelina tracks in the mud.

Clouds lit by the setting sun

And some clouds.

Boring.

Just a Memory

Bongo's head looking over the washI’m taking the memory trail today before I forget.

You see, we haven’t had rain in a very long time.

I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like.

It’s been so long that the county I live in has already posted fire restrictions.

They never post fire restrictions this early in the year.

Maybe somebody should tell them it’s only April.

So anyway, before I forget what rain is like, I thought I’d look back at some pictures my person took from the last time it rained.

She doesn’t make me wait around as much when she takes rain pictures like she does when she’s taking flower pictures, so I like the rain pictures better.

Bongo looking at wet red rocks

The rocks on my trails change color when it rains.

Rain must have some magical dye in it or something that goes away the same time the rain does.

Bongo on rocks with water flowing down

Water flows down the rocks on my trails when there’s rain.

It’s fun to splash in.

Red rocks covered in clouds

Sometimes the rain has giant erasers and it starts erasing the big rocks on my trails.

The rocks always come back eventually, so they must be magic erasers.

Bongo in his puddle

My puddle!

Oh puddle, I almost forgot about you.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen you.

Where are you hiding?

I’m not sure why my puddle only shows up when it rains.

Well puddle, I guess it will be awhile longer till I see you again because…

Bongo on the trail with red rocks and blue sky in the background

I’m really enjoying all this great weather we’re having.

Guess I’ll forget about the rain.

Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day

Bongo splashing the waterDo you know what today is?

It’s one of my favorite days.

Well, it’s going to be one of my favorite days. I didn’t know about this holiday last year.

Today is Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day.

I was really looking forward to splashing…

.

.

Bongo Getting One More Swim

Or maybe even swimming and splashing.

As long as I could get my people all wet.

But here’s what happened.

I went to my favorite puddle…

Bongo at the place where a puddle used to be

And it was gone!

Without my puddle how could I celebrate this special holiday?

So I talked my people into taking me on a new trail.

Bongo and his younger person on a trail

One that I’ve never been on before.

And I heard that it ended up at a creek.

So we wandered around and up and down and finally we ended up…

Bongo standing at the top of the world

At the top of the world!

I sat there with my younger person…

Bongo and his younger person looking at the view

And it didn’t seem like he was going to move.

Bongo and younger person sitting and looking at the view

I’ve got to figure something out – because now I know where the puddle is.

Bongo getting restless

And I’m going to find a way to get there.

Bongo looking the other way

Over there looks like a good place to start.

Bongo heading down the cliff

Yup, this way’s going to get me there.

Bongo part way down the cliff

Hey guys, this is the right way. Come on down here!

Bongo being made to climb back up

What do you mean, I’ve got to climb back up?

Bongo back on top

You’re missing the whole point.

I haven’t splashed in a puddle yet.

When are my people ever going to learn?
