Warning Bark

Bongo in the darkFinally, my person figured it out.

I’ve been trying to warn her the last few nights and all she does is tell me to come back in the house.

She doesn’t even know what my bark is for.

It’s not like I bark up a storm.

Just one warning bark when they walk by.

And then my person tells me to come in.

.

***

You see, we’ve been having some visitors the last few nights.

And when I’m hanging outside in the evenings I hear them walking by on the other side of my fence.

But my person had no idea what my warnings were – until she went out to her car one night and found them there.

Right in my front yard.

And the next day she found something else.

They’d made their own path right on the side of our house.

This is my yard.

I’m the only one allowed to make trails in it.

I’d better send my person on inspection treks around the house more often.

***

Finally, my person heeded my warning.

She checked the front yard and found them out there again.

Javelinas in the yard

Hey person, you managed to get the light on me in the dark.

What was your problem with those javelinas?

The Rain Changes Everything

Bongo looking away from a prickly pear blossomIt rained last night.

Really hard.

For a long time.

It’s been a very long time since we had rain.

So today when I went out on my trails, everything looked different.

The first different thing I found was my girlfriend Lucy.

The rain must have brought her out, because I haven’t seen her in a very long time.

And then I saw…

Hey person, look over there.

No, not that direction.

There’s nothing for you to take pictures of that you would be interested in looking at in that direction.

***

There have been no flowers on my trails for awhile now.

It’s been nice.

.

But a late blooming prickly pear popped out after the rain and of course my person had to take a picture.

Prickly pear blossom

At least there were only two blossoms on all of my trails so I got my person moving along fairly quickly.

And then I saw it!!!

My puddle!

Bongo by his puddle

My puddle had returned!

It’s been so long since I’ve seen my puddle that I almost forgot about it.

But my person said we couldn’t stay forever – it was getting dark.

So we saw a few ho hum things on our way back from my puddle.

Clouds lit by the setting sun

And some clouds.

Boring.

What’s for Dinner?

Prickly Pear Cactus with bites out of itSomeone has been pulling mischief on my trails.

Just look at this!

They’ve been eating the prickly pear cactus.

This has got to be a real mischief maker for sure.

I mean, who would want to eat cactus?

Those things are full of pricklers.

But somebody has.

.

And I’m going to investigate.

Detective Dog

Detective Dog to the rescue!

Here’s more prickly pears with bites.

Prickly pear cactus with bite out of it

I don’t believe it!

And this Detective Dog hat is making me smart.

I think I know who the culprit is already.

Because right here is where I saw that culprit the other day.

And if it wasn’t him, it was one of his buddies.

Now all I have to do is find the javelina with cactus pricklers sticking out of his mouth.

Prints

Bongo and prints in the mucWhen the ground gets wet and squishy they show up.

Prints.

Pawprints, footprints, and hoofprints.

Javelina prints

I’ve been trying to figure out what those hoof looking prints are.

I’ve never seen anyone on my trails that matches up to those.

My person says that’s because they usually come out at night.

She says she’s seen them during the day, but never on my trails.

I guess those trail creatures are night creatures for sure.

My person says they’re usually up to no good.

They eat the prickly pear cactus.

And they dig up people’s gardens.

Sometimes on trash day they knock over all the garbage cans and go through the garbage looking for goodies.

I don’t know why they go through my garbage.

I already ate all the good stuff.

But today I was heading out on my trails – and there it was.

Standing right next to my trail looking at us.

I tried to give it what for, but my person wouldn’t let go of my leash.

I guess she was scared of it.

I did manage one thing though.

You know how my person is always taking pictures of everything she sees?

I chased that creature right back into the bushes before she could get her camera out and aim it.

Because I didn’t want that creature taking over my blog.

***

What, person?

You have a picture?

An old one from before I was around?

Okay, since it’s old.

Not the Toadies

Bongo tied on top of red rocksA couple days ago I posted about all the mischief that was done to me.

Well, I think I have to make an apology.

It’s really hard for me to apologize. I’m usually such a perfect dog that I rarely have anything to apologize for.

But I think I might have made one little mistake.

You see, I blamed the toadies for taking off with my puddle.

But upon further investigation I discovered that it might not have been those toadies at all.

And now I have a real mystery on my hands paws.

I’m going to need to wear two hats to solve this one.

Detective Dog

My Detective Dog hat.

Bongo wearing his Nature Dog hat

And my Nature Dog hat.

Somebody left behind some evidence. And it doesn’t look like those toadies took my puddle at all.

I even found that the toadies were getting into the evidence to help me investigate.

But if I’m reading the clues right, this has got to be the strangest creature I’ve ever seen.

It’s got two different kinds of feet – one foot is a paw, kind of like mine. The other is a hoof.

And to make matters more confusing, there was a smaller guy hanging around with this creature. Maybe if I find the little guy it will give me a clue about that strange creature.

The only animal around here that I know of with a hoof is a javelina.

Javelinas are strange enough on their own, but half a javelina? Now that’s really strange.

And what’s the other half? Maybe a coyote? So what is that?

A javeyote? Or maybe a coylina?

That settles it then. That little guy I’m looking for must be a jackelope.

Party Time

Can found on the trailLast night there was a party. Actually, I think there were two parties. And I wasn’t invited to either one.

One of the parties was right on my street. They even went past my house. I don’t know why they didn’t think to stop and invite me. It was totally rude of them.

The party on my street was a javelina party. And this morning it looked like they had a really fun time.

Last night my person and a bunch of the neighbors put their garbage cans out on the street. They do this about once a week and I still haven’t figured out why. I think they’re just asking for trouble.

Well, they got trouble and this morning they were all out picking up their garbage cans and filling them up again. Except they didn’t get filled up quite as much this time. The javelina probably picked through the garbage to find party hats and favors. I don’t think they have a javelina party supply store.

But there was a second party. My person and I found evidence of it on my trails. My person picked up that party can and brought it home with her. I guess she thinks the javelina need more party supplies.

I don’t think my person gets it. Javelina aren’t going to want any people party supplies. She might as well put that can right in the garbage.

Prickly Pear Attack

Prickly Pear Bitten by JavelinaAlong my trails live lots of prickly pear cactus. Mostly I try to stay away from those things because they are full of pricklers and I don’t want to get pricked by them. Somebody around here doesn’t seem to be worried about that though, because there are big bites out of some of those cacti.

I wonder if they taste any good. Someone thinks they do because they’re willing to brave the pricklers and all in order to eat them. I’d sure like to try them – they must be very good – but I’m going to see if my person will remove the pricklers first.

My person says it’s the javelina that eat those things. Those creatures must be braver than I thought, or dumber. I wonder if they run around with pricklers in their mouths. Ouch!

I think there’s a new kind of javelina stalking my trails now. When the normal javelinas bite into a prickly pear the bite mark is curved and bumpy. But these new bites are straight across and smooth. And this new javelina is not very good at finishing everything on its plate. It leaves most of its food on the ground.

I think this new javelina deserves a good spanking.

Unwelcome Visitors

I don’t bark very often – unless someone I don’t know comes into my yard. Then I’m going to give that trespasser what for and let him know he doesn’t belong there.

Bongo Looking OutsideLast night was one of those times. I heard someone out in the yard and I gave a warning bark. I don’t know much about time, but my person says it was around 4:00 in the morning. Well that warning bark didn’t work. Whoever it was out there didn’t leave – so I barked some more. And I barked again.

I guess I woke my person up because she came out to see what I was barking at. She opened the blinds to see who was out in the yard and said she didn’t see anything. That changed quickly. We both saw them at the same time. Not one, but two of them nonchalantly walking around the yard.

I got really excited and started jumping at the window blinds so my person raised them for me. She didn’t even yell at me when I got up on the back of the couch.

They had elliptical bodies, short stubby legs, and big snouts. My person says they’re called javelinas. They look kind of like pigs, but they’re not.

I finally barked enough to scare those javelinas away. My yard seemed to be popular though. Awhile later I had to get up and bark at a howling cat. I’m sure glad I don’t have to get up early like my person does. She’ll be okay though. She wasn’t the one doing all the work.
