Color the Sky

Bongo on the TrailI was walking along my trails today minding my own business when I looked up in the sky and saw something strange. White things.

I’ve seen those white things in the sky before, but it’s been a long time. I was beginning to think that the only color the sky came in was blue.

Oh yeah, clouds. That’s what those white things are called. I’d almost forgotten.

.

Clouds

Oh, no! Those clouds remind me of something else that starts coming this time of year. Something I don’t like at all. Thunder!

Hey person, let’s get home. I don’t want to find any thunder out here. Some of my friends who live other places are already getting thunder. Yikes!

What? There’s no thunder in those clouds? How do you know, person?

They might not look like thunder clouds. But I don’t want to take any chances. Have you got any blue crayons, person?

Thunder Run

Bongo trying to run from thunderI think my person did it to me on purpose. Almost as soon as we went outside for a walk I heard her mumble something about lightning. Then no sooner than we got on my trails I heard it. It wasn’t loud but it was definitely there. That low rolling sound of thunder.

I immediately started running. If I go fast enough I might be able to get away from it – but my person had other ideas. Boing! I hit the end of the leash. I was attached to my person and I can’t ever seem to get her to run.

Come on, person. If we move fast enough we might be able to escape that thing. Hurry up!

My person would have nothing to do with it. I’m not sure why. She’s strange sometimes.

I decided since my person wouldn’t run with me I’d better protect her, so I stuck close by her.

Bongo staying close

When she started to turn to head back home I did everything I could to convince her not to go that way. That’s where the thunder was coming from. My person needs some serious training. She wouldn’t listen at all.

We headed back home and I couldn’t decide if I should try running ahead or stick close to my person – so I did both. I went straight home and didn’t even detour to go in my wash like I usually do.

We finally made it. That was really hard, but I got my person home safe. I really thought that thunder was going to get her.

Out the Door

Bongo Heading Out the DoorWe had thunder again the other day. We don’t usually get thunder this time of year. I think whoever makes that loud sound up there must be picking on me because we’ve had a lot of it. Anyway, my person put my anxiety vest on and it helped some.

That awful thunder was starting to calm down, but I wasn’t sure it was gone yet when my person had this horrible idea. She decided to leave the house and leave me here alone – well, Scratchy was here but he doesn’t count.

She started out the front door and I wasn’t about to let her do it. I ran right over to that door and made like I was going to push myself outside. She knew I’d do it, and I knew she wouldn’t let me because then she has to catch me before she can leave. And I’m pretty good at playing keep away.

My person went to the garage door and I was right there. I wouldn’t let her go into the garage unless she took me with her. She headed back to the front door and I went ahead of her. Then she did something I didn’t like at all. Halfway to the front door she cut back and went out the door to the garage and shut it before I could get there.

I’m supposed to be the escape artist. I guess I taught my person a few of my tricks without meaning to.

Thunder Trucks

Electric Company TruckThings were a little frightening this morning. My person let me go outside as usual – so far, so good. We came back in and she fed Scratchy – always Scratchy first – I’m rolling my eyes here. Then she fed me, and before I could even stick my nose into my bowl it happened. The lights went out and there was a loud bang. It sounded like thunder – loud thunder like when it’s right near our house.

I was not a happy camper. As a matter of fact, I was quite scared. When it thunders once it almost always thunders more. I couldn’t even eat my breakfast. Then these things in the house started making beepy noises. I didn’t like that either. They might have been helping the thunder get ready to come back again. Finally my person opened a cabinet door, moved a black box, pushed a button and the beepy noises stopped.

While all this was going on some white trucks invaded our neighborhood. They must have been there to keep the thunder from coming back because it never thundered any more, but the lights did come back on. Those trucks must be new because there weren’t any around the last time we had thunder. I sure hope they come back next time we have a storm.

Thunder Fears Be Gone

Bongo Modeling his Anxiety WrapMy person got me an Anxiety Wrap and she said she hopes it will calm me down during thunder. The only thing is she got it at the end of thunder season. I don’t know what she was thinking. I don’t need it now.

Well, my person must have special powers or something because she made the thunderstorms come back so she could try out that anxiety wrap on me. The first part of this week both my people left for the day and they left me with that anxiety wrap on. When they came home my person said she worried about what I would do because there was really loud thunder where she went. I didn’t think it was that bad. Maybe her thunder was louder. I did my usual stuff – eat the cat food, invade the litter box, and mess up my person’s bed – but I didn’t break anything. I swear I didn’t.

My person has been putting that vest on me before she leaves all week. One time she took it off and it started thundering right after that. I think my person made that thunder come so she’d have an excuse to put the vest on me again. I have to admit that the thunder isn’t quite so scary when I have the vest on.

It was really embarrassing though when my person made me go for walks in that vest. I’m sure glad we didn’t see any other dogs. I would have been really upset if they laughed at me.

Calmer – or Not

My person got me a new coat. It’s called an Anxiety Wrap. It’s supposed to help me be calmer during thunder. I was kind of worried about this thing because I heard my person tell my younger person that she’d ordered it and the younger person said he hoped it was a straight jacket. I don’t know what a straight jacked is but it doesn’t sound good.

I couldn’t figure out what my person was doing when she put the thing on me. First she put my legs through some holes. Then she took my legs out. Then she put my legs in again. Then she messed with a bunch of stuff and finally it was on me the right way. I have to admit I was very good during all this.

Then my person wanted to take pictures of me in this new coat. Something about the click of the camera just excites me. My person said this coat was supposed to make me calm and relaxed but that camera got me all excited. First I started jumping – then I began dragging one of my toys all around the living room. Then I jumped and grabbed onto my person. It was so much fun.

I guess my person had enough of my over-activity because she put the camera away. Or maybe it was because I made her drop it when I jumped on her. Anyway, without the camera clicking it wasn’t any fun anymore and I did what I usually do. Sleep.

Bongo's Handiwork

Oops!

Oops. I didn’t mean to do it. Truly I didn’t. But my people left me –again. And then it happened – again. I just had to find a way out. Any way out. I didn’t care how I did it. I didn’t care about getting in trouble. Whatever I had to dig up or tear down – I was gonna do it.

Oh no! Here they come. Good, it’s still thundering. Maybe if I shake real hard like I’m really, really scared, they’ll feel sorry for me and I won’t get in too much trouble. Maybe. Oh please, please, please.

Hey, what’s with this Marley dog my person is talking about? Here I just tore up the house and I’m expecting to get a lot of attention – even if it’s bad attention – and she’s talking about Marley. Does she have a new friend? Does she like Marley better than me? My person says Marley and Me was her favorite book because it made her feel like I wasn’t so bad. But she says I’m a close second now. I don’t want to be second. I want to be first.

Berry Blast

What are these things on the ground?

What are these things on the ground?

Last night I heard it. My person had music on but I still could hear it. A couple loud rumbles – my least favorite sound. I have trouble holding everything in when the storms come around, so when my person offered to take me outside I went for it.

She put my leash on and I drug her to the front door. I had to get out in a hurry. We went outside and I drug her close to my favorite front yard pine tree. Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed. The lightning reflected throughout the clouds, and it flashed and reflected again.

And then it happened. My person and I were being pelted. It didn’t feel like rain – we weren’t getting wet. Maybe it was hail. I don’t think so though. Hail this big would hurt when it hit. Oh, no. That juniper tree over there. That’s what it is. The wind is blowing and the tree is letting go. We’re being pelted with flying juniper berries. I think I discovered a new kind of weather.

Chase Away the Thunder

Will these work?

Will these work?

I am bummed. I had a big celebration on September 1st because I thought it was the end of monsoon season. No more thunder. And it was good for a few days. I was happy I didn’t have to worry about a big monster reaching out of the sky and grabbing me – and squeezing me to little bits.

Then it happened. It came back. Not only thunder, but loud rain pounding down on the roof – so loud that I wanted to curl up into a little ball and hide. But I can’t. There’s nowhere to hide from that stuff. Guess I’ll have another party. This time I’m going to use party horns and noisemakers. Maybe they’ll be loud enough to chase away the thunder.

Out the Door

I'm not going out there!

I'm not going out there!

Yesterday both of my people left for the whole day. I have a special friend that comes over to let me out when my people leave for a long time. My friend showed up and I was happy to see her, but she wanted me to go outside. I had just heard thunder rumbling in the distance and there was no way I was going out there. No way at all.

I guess my friend didn’t know what to do because she pulled out this little box and started talking in it. I could hear my person’s voice coming out of that box. Darn. My person must have told my friend all her tricks because the next thing my friend did was to put my leash on me and drag me out the front door. I tried to resist. I resisted so hard that my collar came off, but she was persistent. She put it back on me and dragged me out that door anyway.

I did my business and she let me go back inside and then she tried to leave. Oh, no you don’t. There’s no way you’re leaving me alone when there’s thunder. I tried to run out that door with her and that trapped her. She couldn’t leave without me getting out. Ah ha. Gotcha! You’ve got to stay with me until I say so. My friend got out that little box again and I heard my person’s voice. I was listening to my person’s voice when my friend snuck out that door. Without me!
