Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from BongoI keep hearing people talk about New Year’s resolutions. I wasn’t sure what they were so I asked my person. She said they were things that people wanted to do, or thought they should do, but they hadn’t yet done them – often things like eating healthier, exercising more, getting more rest, or accomplishing something. So they decide to make a resolution that at the beginning of the New Year they will start doing whatever it is they think they should be doing.

My person said that most people don’t stick to their resolutions for very long. Starting a new year is not enough motivation for starting a new resolution. People need to find a better motivation, and start whatever it is they want to start right now – not wait until the next New Year.

I got really concerned, because I didn’t want to start any resolutions that I would just drop in a little while. But my person said to start new things now, and now happens to be the start of a new year. So I thought I’d make a list of resolutions that I know I won’t stop. Here’s my list:

  1. Take naps every day.
  2. Go for walks every day.
  3. Find a new scent on every walk.
  4. Get loves from at least one cute girl on every walk (unless I don’t meet any).
  5. Play Frisbee every day.
  6. Write a blog post every day.
  7. Eat doggie treats every day.
  8. Bark at every stranger that comes to the house (gotta warn my people).
  9. Get my person out of bed if she sleeps too long.

And last but not least –

10. Eat all the food in my doggie dish (except any olives I find).

My person pointed out to me that I already do all the things on my list. I don’t think she gets it. My resolutions cover eating right, exercising, resting, and getting things done – and I’ll still be doing them by the end of the year.

Dammed Up

Bongo exploring the puddle with the new damI’m busy investigating. You see, when I was out walking on the trails today and I stopped by my puddle I found that somebody had dammed it up.

At first I thought maybe my puddle had been visited by beavers, but my person told me that beavers don’t use rocks as their building materials – and besides I’ve never seen a beaver anywhere near my puddle.

I hope I can find some clues as to who built this dam in my puddle. There might have been some puny puddle people who showed up in the middle of the night and wanted a larger puddle. The puddle is changing because of the dam. There are now green plants floating in it. Maybe the puddle will change into a lake now and I’ll have a swimming hole.

That would be so cool – to have a swimming hole on my trails. Unless those puny puddle people decided to turn into large lake lizards and try to share the swimming hole with me. I’m not sure how that would work out.

I think I’ll wade across now and hit the trail on the other side.

What Do I Smell?

Bongo SniffingMy person left me for awhile and when she came home I smelled something familiar on her. It was the smell of my little friend that comes over to visit me her sometimes. I was not very happy because she didn’t take me with her to see him.

After I sorted out all the smells on my person – a strange dog and cat and lots of people – I noticed another smell. I didn’t recognize this smell, but it was a really good one. It smelled a little like the robins I saw the other day, but not the same. It actually smelled very tasty, like something I might want to take a big bite out of.

My person started getting suspicious when I kept sniffing her and she said that even if she took me over to my little friend’s house it wouldn’t do me any good. She said I wasn’t going to get anywhere near those chickens.

So that’s what I smell. Chickens! Come on person, who comes first – the chicken, or the dog?

Urge to Dig

Ever since I got my big bone for Christmas I’ve had an urge to dig and bury it. I’ve been really frustrated because every time I try to take that bone outside my person makes me drop it before she’ll open the door. How am I going to bury my bone if I can’t take it outside? The floors of my house are just too hard to dig through.

Well, today I got a different idea. I’ve got to bury something, and I guess it has to be something that’s already outside. My person takes my Frisbee outside and she throws it for me to catch. I got a new one for Christmas. It’s a nice, new, dog Frisbee. It’s softer than any I’ve had before. I wonder if it will bury.

This ground is still soft and moist from the rains we had a few days ago.

Okay I buried it. Time for another game of Frisbee.

Prickly Pear Attack

Prickly Pear Bitten by JavelinaAlong my trails live lots of prickly pear cactus. Mostly I try to stay away from those things because they are full of pricklers and I don’t want to get pricked by them. Somebody around here doesn’t seem to be worried about that though, because there are big bites out of some of those cacti.

I wonder if they taste any good. Someone thinks they do because they’re willing to brave the pricklers and all in order to eat them. I’d sure like to try them – they must be very good – but I’m going to see if my person will remove the pricklers first.

My person says it’s the javelina that eat those things. Those creatures must be braver than I thought, or dumber. I wonder if they run around with pricklers in their mouths. Ouch!

I think there’s a new kind of javelina stalking my trails now. When the normal javelinas bite into a prickly pear the bite mark is curved and bumpy. But these new bites are straight across and smooth. And this new javelina is not very good at finishing everything on its plate. It leaves most of its food on the ground.

I think this new javelina deserves a good spanking.

The Perfect Christmas

This Christmas was really great. I got lot of presents.

Bongo Unwrapping Presents

Scratchy tried to take all the presents for himself.

Scratchy under the tree with the presents

Once we sorted all the presents out and I got mine, Scratchy did get a toy that he liked.

Scratchy's Toy

My favorite toy came from some of my friends. It was my favorite because my younger person played with me.

Bongo Playing Tug O War

I got a reindeer that I really like too – because it has a loud squeak.

I haven’t figured out what to do with my big bone, so I’ve been carrying it around the house. I tried to take it outside to bury it but my person made me drop it before she’d open the door.

After we opened presents we got to go for a walk. I could have used some snow to play in but I can’t complain. It was a perfect day.

This has been an exciting day. I think it’s time for a nap.

The Shepherds See

Catena - The Adoration of the Shepherds

“I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”        Luke 2:10b – 11

What is it with my person? She keeps putting stuff on my blog that I didn’t write. Is this another Bible story? All I can say is it better be a good one – and the last one had animals, so try to beat that.

Animals and angels? No way! Okay, I’m listening.

My person told me that the night baby Jesus was born there were shepherds in some nearby fields watching their flocks. I bet it was cold and dark out there. Those shepherds must have really loved those sheep to stay out there with them. I wonder if they cuddled up with their sheep dogs to keep warm.

Okay person. You can go on with the story. I was just thinking about those animals. I love the parts with animals. Well, the shepherds were sitting around all cuddled up with their dogs and an angel appeared to them. They were really scared when they saw that angel and the angel had to tell them not to be afraid. Then that angel told the shepherds about the baby that would save them and that the baby would be lying in a manger.

When that angel finished talking a whole bunch of angels appeared and started praising God. When all those angels left, those shepherds must have been looking at each other really funny. “Did you see that?” “Pinch me please.” “Did we all see the same thing?”

Those shepherds decided to go to Bethlehem and check things out for themselves and when they got there they found Mary and Joseph, and there was a baby lying in a manger. I bet it was the first time they saw a baby in a manger – I mean, who would want to put their baby in a trough that animals ate out of?

The shepherds went out to tell everyone they could find what they had seen. They glorified and praised God and people were amazed at their story.

My person says that Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.

That must have been a special baby. For angels to choose to tell people that hung out with sheep and sheep dogs, and for the baby to be born where animals hang out? What a great way to start out in life.

Cookies

Bongo Checking Out the CookiesYay! My person finally did it. After all the hard work I’ve been doing cleaning up the kitchen floor lately she finally decided to reward me. I didn’t know it at first. I went to clean the floor as usual, and something tasted a little different. I didn’t know why.

And then when my person pulled those cookies out of the oven they smelled different. They didn’t smell like the usual run of the mill people cookies that she’s been making lately.

And then I got the best surprise of all. My person gave me a cookie. She let me eat one. Sweet!!! She said she got the recipe from one of my blogging buddies at For the Love of My Dogs. You can check the recipe out here. My person would never have made me cookies if she hadn’t seen that post so I am really thankful. It would be great if all my dog blogging friends got special cookies for Christmas.

But you know what my person did after she made those cookies? She packaged them up and put a bow on top and put them in the freezer. She said I don’t get any more cookies until Christmas. She said they’re a Christmas present for me.

What’s with this Christmas thing? I want my cookies now!

If you want to see more of my Christmas wishes (and Scratchy’s too – my person made me mention Scratchy) then hop on over to Rumpy’s blog. He posted our letters to Santa Paws.

It’s My Cubby

Try to Get MeThis is Scratchy here. Bongo and I were having a slight disagreement and I won, so I get to write on his blog today. All I was doing was trying to find a good hidey place – somewhere that I could have some peace and quiet. Somewhere where Bongo wouldn’t bug me.

So what does Bongo do? He’s totally jealous that I found this little cubby that I can fit into. Much too small for Bongo, but perfect for me. So he starts harassing me.

I know all of you who read Bongo’s blog think he’s some kind of perfect dog or something, but believe me he isn’t. Oh, the stories I could tell about him. After all, I’m just a poor little innocent kitty, and Bongo tried to chase me out of my cubby.

Well, I’ll get him this time. I’ve found the perfect place. It’s a good thing it’s Christmas time because for some reason my people only give me this place for a short time every year. And you know why it’s so perfect? Because Bongo gets yelled at if he tries to get back here.
