About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

Under the Tree

Bongo Under the TreeAround Christmastime my person receives large cardboard boxes in the mail from her sister and brother. The boxes are filled with smaller boxes wrapped in brightly colored paper – mostly red and green. My person used to put the smaller boxes under the Christmas tree and leave them there until Christmas Day.

***

Sometimes my people would visit their family when it wasn’t Christmas. On the way between my person’s parent’s house and her sister’s house is a candy store and my person would stop there and buy malt balls for her sister. Then my person’s sister discovered that a grocery store near her house had very good malt balls, so when my people visited her she would have malt balls for my younger person.

***

It was my first Christmas at my house, there were presents under the tree, and Scratchy and I were the only ones home – and something under the tree smelled very good. So I sniffed around and found which package that smell came from.

It didn’t take much to tear into that package and the contents tasted extra special. Don’t worry younger person, I left you the malt ball wrapper.

I’m not sure why, but my person never leaves brightly colored boxes under the Christmas tree anymore.

To Bethlehem

English: Joseph and Mary arrive in Bethlehem (...

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from old, from ancient times.”     Micah 5:2

My person promised. She said today’s Bible story will have animals in it – so I’m waiting. She’d better be right or I’m going to erase those words she put on my blog that I didn’t write.

My person says that Joseph eventually got married to Mary – that sounds funny, married to Mary. Okay person. I’ll try to listen, but I’m still waiting for those animals.

Caesar Augustus – he was the head guy of the Roman Empire that ruled over Israel at the time – decided he wanted to have a census. A what? Everyone had to go to his own town to register. My person said that since Joseph was from the line of David – hey I remember David. He started out as a shepherd boy and had lots of animals around him – Joseph had to go to David’s hometown of Bethlehem, and he took Mary with him.

Bethlehem was about eighty miles from Nazareth where Joseph and Mary lived. Mary was about to have a baby so it would have been hard for her to walk that far. My person says she probably rode a donkey.

A donkey! Finally, there’s an animal in the story.

Okay person, I’m listening now. When Joseph and Mary – and the donkey – finally made it to Bethlehem there was no room for them at the inn.

Mary was about to have her baby so she needed someplace to stay. You know what my person said they did? They went and hung out where the animals lived. Mary had her baby and she laid him in a manger. My person said a manger is the thing that the animals eat from.

I hope those animals don’t try to eat that baby by mistake.

It’s at the Mall!

Bongo with a Sad LookMy people left me again today. They both took off and left me alone in the house – well, alone with Scratchy, if you can call him company.

They were gone for awhile and then they came back and my person showed me something. I couldn’t believe what they showed me. It was amazing!

My person said they went to a mall to go Christmas shopping. I didn’t know what a mall was so my person told me it was a place where you can buy lots of things. I asked her if you can buy dog things there and if they went Christmas shopping for me. My person wouldn’t tell me. No fair!

Well, my person said when they went into one store in the mall they saw it. They saw my name on big signs all over the place. I’m so excited! That means that my blog has gotten so famous that people are advertising it in the malls. I hope my people will take me with them to that mall. I think I might have to make some public appearances.

Suds

Bongo checking out the sudsToday I was walking along on my trails minding my own business when suddenly I saw it. It couldn’t have been snow – the rain from the last couple days washed away the little traces that were left. It was something more unusual that that.

My puddle, which had been getting pretty scungy, now had water flowing into and out of it and it was much cleaner. But then, when I passed by my puddle and followed the little stream running away from it – I found it.

At the bottom of a rock, sitting there in all its white foaminess, I found a pile of suds. At first I thought it was snow, but it was much too frothy for that.

So maybe it wasn’t the water running through it that cleaned up my puddle. Maybe, just maybe, someone gave my puddle a bath. I never heard of giving a puddle a bath, but here you have it. First class evidence.

Or maybe someone thinks I need a bath, and they put those suds there so I would scrub myself before heading back home. No, that can’t possibly be. It’s got to be the puddle they were cleaning. I wish I had a camera hanging on a nearby tree. I want to know who that person was that gave my puddle a bath.

Famous

Sedona Post OfficeI think my person is famous and she didn’t even tell me. When we go on the trails near our house we see lots of people and dogs. Most of them come to the trailhead in their cars and we don’t know them, but my person says hi and I sniff them as they pass.

Some people and dogs live in the neighborhood so we see them on the trail all the time. I recognize the dogs, and my person recognizes the people because we share the same trails a lot.

Well today we were walking along and we passed two people. We stopped and said “Hi” and I got some loves. I always like that. Then the man asked my person if she worked at the post office. Well, my person used to work at the post office and that man had been her customer.

I know all the trail people that my person knows, so if someone that I don’t know on the trail recognizes her, doesn’t that make her famous?

Chasing Robins

Robins and PuddleFor the last couple of days the large puddle on my trail has been occupied when we walk toward it. By the time we get there everyone has scattered. Flown up into the trees to get away from us. My person was disappointed because she wanted to get pictures of those birds hanging out around my puddle. I just wanted to chase a few.

Those birds have red breasts and I don’t see them around here very often. My person said the birds are robins and she used to see a lot more of them when she lived in Seattle. She thought it was strange that birds were migrating this late in the year, so she looked online and found out why. She says robins stay wherever they can find food – so some don’t migrate at all, but many have to leave their breeding grounds in winter since there’s not as much food around.

Okay, so much for Bongo facts. When we came back home today we found more robins in a neighbor’s yard. My person got a picture of one but it wouldn’t let us get very close. My person says she’ll Photoshop the robin into the puddle for me.

I don’t think that’s quite the same. I haven’t figured out how to chase a Photoshopped robin.

The Christmas Elf

Bongo and the Christmas TreeEver since my younger person was little my family had a Christmas tradition. As soon as the tree went up a special visitor came to their house every night. That visitor was the Christmas Elf. The elf would leave candy for my younger person in special containers under the Christmas tree. A couple days before Christmas the elf would even leave some small gifts.

My younger person used to look forward to getting up in the morning and checking to see what the Christmas Elf had brought him. It was kind of like a mini Christmas.

That all changed when I came to live here. I’d been here for several months before Christmas finally came around so I was pretty much part of the family by then. Well, they put the tree up and that night the Christmas Elf showed up. There were chocolates here and there under the tree. They smelled so good and since they were left where I could reach them I figured they must be for me – so I ate them. Mmmmm delicious!

The next day I didn’t feel so good and my person noticed that all the candy was missing. I didn’t get in much trouble because my person figured the natural consequences of my actions were punishment enough (What did I just say? I was sick and that was bad enough.)

I was never tempted by chocolate again so I guess you could say I learned my lesson. Actually, I’d probably gobble it right up if I ever found any chocolate, but that was the last time the Christmas Elf ever came to our house. I’m not sure where he went, but it isn’t here.

Unwelcome Visitors

I don’t bark very often – unless someone I don’t know comes into my yard. Then I’m going to give that trespasser what for and let him know he doesn’t belong there.

Bongo Looking OutsideLast night was one of those times. I heard someone out in the yard and I gave a warning bark. I don’t know much about time, but my person says it was around 4:00 in the morning. Well that warning bark didn’t work. Whoever it was out there didn’t leave – so I barked some more. And I barked again.

I guess I woke my person up because she came out to see what I was barking at. She opened the blinds to see who was out in the yard and said she didn’t see anything. That changed quickly. We both saw them at the same time. Not one, but two of them nonchalantly walking around the yard.

I got really excited and started jumping at the window blinds so my person raised them for me. She didn’t even yell at me when I got up on the back of the couch.

They had elliptical bodies, short stubby legs, and big snouts. My person says they’re called javelinas. They look kind of like pigs, but they’re not.

I finally barked enough to scare those javelinas away. My yard seemed to be popular though. Awhile later I had to get up and bark at a howling cat. I’m sure glad I don’t have to get up early like my person does. She’ll be okay though. She wasn’t the one doing all the work.

Angels are Busy

Philippe de Champaigne's The Dream of Saint Jo...

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ – which means, ‘God with us.’” Matthew 1:22-23

There she goes again – putting words on my blog that I didn’t write. Come on person, isn’t this my blog?

More Bible stories? Are there animals? A bunch of my blogging friends told me there would be animals coming in the story you started last week.

What!!! You mean I have to wait one more week before you get to the animals? I think you’re just stringing me along. I think I’ll go lie down on my bed and go to sleep.

Okay, I’ll stay for another angel story. That angel Gabriel was something else though – telling Mary she was going to have a baby while she was still a virgin. I guess I’m listening.

My person started telling me about Joseph. You know, that guy that Mary was engaged to. My person said that marriage customs were different then than they are now. Once two people in Israel in Bible times became engaged, they were committed to each other the same as if they were already married. They had to actually have a divorce to become unengaged. I’m not quite sure I get it. Dogs don’t do that marriage thing.

Anyway, Joseph found out Mary was pregnant and since he followed God and had respected Mary he figured she hadn’t been faithful to him. I bet he was pretty upset. He decided he would divorce her quietly.

But then my person says an angel came to Joseph in a dream. I like the angel that came to Mary better. She was wide awake.

Okay person, I’ll stop making side comments. At least I’ll try.

My person says Joseph didn’t need to be awake because he listened to that angel in his dream. The angel told Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife because her baby came from the Holy Spirit. The angel also said that Mary would have a son and Joseph was to name him Jesus, because the son will save his people from their sins.

I’m not sure what that is that people need saving from. Sins must be something that people have and not dogs. Am I missing out on something here?

Strange Behavior

Partial EclipseMy person behaved very strangely today. She got up while it was still dark. Sometimes she does that, but this time she put on her hiking boots and started heading out the door. Well of course I wasn’t about to let her go without me so I got up too.

We headed for the trails and it was still so dark my person needed a flashlight. And she was stopping and taking pictures. What the heck? I think there’s something wrong with my person. I’ve never seen her act this way.

We started heading toward the trail that goes up Sugarloaf. Then my person changed her mind. She said something about the moon hiding behind Thunder Mountain when we walked that direction. Since when has she ever cared where the moon was before?

I don’t know what had gotten into my person because then she took me up toward a ridge but we weren’t even on a real trail. Come on person – there is a trail up here where you don’t have to walk right next to cactus and jump over rocks. You just have to go back down to the road first.

We hung out on that ridge for awhile and my person took more pictures, but she said she needed to get a better camera – and a telephoto lense (whatever that is). It started getting light and my person said we could go back home now – that the moon had sunk behind Thunder Mountain right before it went into total eclipse.

I’m not sure what she was talking about, but by then it didn’t matter. All I cared about was getting back to my warm bed – and the rabbit that ran across the street in front of us.
