The Core is Mine

Waiting for an AppleThere she goes – eating one of those things again. Nice, round, and juicy. My person says it’s called an apple. I wish she’d give me a whole apple sometimes, but she eats them and just gives me the core. At least she takes the stem off first. I hope you don’t think my person is mean to me, throwing me her garbage. I really like those apple cores and I ask my person for them.

Sometimes my person cuts the apple into pieces and I get a little piece of the core at a time. My person tosses them to me and I catch them. I love catching things and I’m really good at it. I only miss when my person throws it wrong. Other times my person eats the apple whole and I get one big core when she’s done. If I’m really lucky she’ll leave some of the good part of the apple on it for me.

Right now she’s sitting at the counter with one of those apples. I think I’ll just sit on the floor next to her. I’m sitting very quietly, very politely. She’ll get the hint.

Almost Up the Chimney

My person totally confused me today. Normally when we go for a walk we make a big loop – going out on one trail and back home on another. Today we got to the place where we usually turn around and go back – but we didn’t go back. My person took me on a trail I’ve never been on before and we kept walking further away from our house. I wasn’t sure what to think, but it was fun finding new smells. My person likes to drag me along when I’ve stopped for a good smell, but this time I kept trying to drag her more than she was dragging me. She kept stopping and getting her camera out. I’d be walking along and suddenly come to the end of my leash.

My person took me to a rock called Chimney Rock. You can probably figure out why it’s called that.

Chimney Rock

To get there we had to walk through some dry washes. They only have water in them when it rains.

When we got around the side of Chimney Rock it looked different. Instead of one big rock it looked like three.

Chimney Rock from the Side

We got to the top of the trail and it went back down the other side, so we stopped and rested before coming back the way we’d gone up. Someone was nice enough to leave a stick up there for me. I tried to get my person to throw it so I could go after it, but she said I might fall down the steep hill. I couldn’t convince her otherwise.

My person kept stalling on the way home – getting her camera out for more pictures.

It’s a good thing they had the trail marked. I could find it by the smell, but I think my person might have gotten lost.

I guess It was good my person took her time, or we wouldn’t have seen this.

A Gentle Whisper

BongoI can’t spell but my person told me that Dog spelled backwards is God. I don’t know what that means. Maybe it means that I’m the opposite of God, my thoughts about God are backwards (not sure that I have any), or that I need God? I think I do need God, but I don’t know how to go about finding Him. I thought maybe I’d turn some God thoughts into dog thoughts and see what happens.

The Lord said, “Go stand in your living room in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful vacuum cleaner tore through the living room and pushed my toys out of the way, but the Lord was not in the vacuum cleaner. After the vacuum cleaner came rain and hail beating down on the roof, but the Lord was not in the rain and hail. After the rain and hail came very loud thunder, but the Lord was not in the thunder. After the thunder came a gentle whisper.

I was barked out from the vacuum cleaner and shaking from the thunder and other noisy things. Gentle whispers are nice, but I’m still not sure if God talks to dogs. I kind of stole that story and my person says I have to tell you where I got it from so I’m not guilty of plagiarism (what’s that?). Okay, here goes. The story came from I Kings 19:11-12 in the Bible. I just changed a few words so it made more sense to me.

This has been hard on my brain. I think I’ll go to sleep now. I hope that gentle whisker doesn’t tickle me.

Confession of a Litter Box Junkie

Bongo Checking Out the Litter BoxI have a confession to make. I am a litter box junkie. Every time my person leaves the house I head straight for it. I can’t help myself. Scratchy even has one with a lid on it but that doesn’t stop me. I push it around until I can stick my head into it and then I look for those little rolls in the litter. They’re like crunchy treats. Sometimes the treats are hard to get and I end up sliding the litter box all the way across the room in my struggles.

My person says I’ve probably grossed you out by now, but I can’t help myself. I don’t feel sorry for doing this. I’m not planning to stop. It’s just something I’ve gotta do. I’m actually doing my person a favor. She doesn’t have to clean the litter box nearly as often.

I’m glad Scratchy is an only cat though. Sometimes I find him inside doing his business when I poke my head in. I could be in real trouble if I looked inside and found two cats in the litter box.

Friends

Bongo and TimmyMy person usually wont’ let me near any other dogs when we meet up with them on the trail. As a matter of fact she won’t let me near any people either unless they come up to me. She holds my collar tight and pulls me off to the side of the trail. I can’t figure out why. I’ve only been mean to a few dogs. If my person only knew what those dogs were thinking she wouldn’t mind that I was mean to them.

I do have some friend dogs though and sometimes we meet up on the trail. A few days ago I saw my friend Maple who used to live on my street, but my best friend dog is Timmy. Timmy lives across the street from me and we greet each other when we get together on the trail. Timmy doesn’t like to walk as far as I do though and he’ll start heading for home when I’m just getting going.

Timmy and I have something in common – besides being dogs, that is. We both live with black cats. Timmy’s black cat is Bubba. Bubba comes over to my yard sometimes but I have to chase him back to Timmy. One black cat is all I can handle.

Tiny Flute Player

Tiny person on top of Sugarloaf

Tiny Person on Top of Sugarloaf

When my person took me for my walk on the trails tonight I could hear music. My person said the music came from a flute and it sounded like Native American flute music. She said that around here it could be a real Native American playing the flute or it could be a Native American wanna be.

We saw a tiny person standing on the top of Sugarloaf, the big rock my person and I climbed up a few days ago. I think that tiny person might have been the one playing the flute. My person wouldn’t let me go up there. She said it would be dark before we could get back down and besides, my younger person was waiting for his dinner. Me too.

When we got to the side of Sugarloaf we could see more tiny people up there and a person wearing a skirt passed us on the trail. People hardly ever wear skirts on a hiking trail, but they wear them to flute concerts.

Maybe they were having a full moon ceremony. The coyotes around here have full moon ceremonies, so I guess the people could have them too.

Cleaning Up

Bongo Stole the BowlMy person is not the best housekeeper in the world. I don’t mind at all though. Sometimes she leaves dirty dishes in the sink and leaves the house. Sometimes there are some really nice smells coming from those dirty dishes.

Fortunately I’m big enough to put my paws up on the counter in front of the sink and reach in. I’ll grab the best smelling bowl with my mouth and carry it over to the nice, cozy carpet where I can sit in comfort and have a tasty treat- well, lick. There’s usually not much food left in them. If I’m lucky the smaller bowls have the best stuff in them. I haven’t figured out how to get some of those big ones out of the sink.

The only thing is that I keep forgetting to put the bowls back in the sink when I’m through with them. When my people come home they find them and I get yelled at. I don’t get yelled at too much though, as long as I remember not to chew the bowl that the food came in.

Tangled

Tangled in a TreeMy person takes me on walks almost every day. We have trails near our house with lots of trees, bushes, and great smells. Most of the smells are right along the trail, so I can stick with my person and still enjoy the aroma. She does drag me away far too often though. Sometimes she has no patience. She thinks I only want to walk. I really want to smell.

Every once in awhile I get the whiff of a really great smell hanging around under a tree or bush a ways off the trail. Sometimes that scent is elusive and I have to crawl under a tree and search through branches to find the strongest point. My person gets all frustrated when I do this. When I’m ready to come back to the trail she tries to get me to take a long way around. That doesn’t make any sense to me at all. The shortest way is the smartest so that’s what I’m going to do.

Well, I thought I was going to do that. My person must be holding tight to my leash because I can’t go anywhere. Come on – stop playing games and let me go. I’m not sure what she’s doing with my leash now. It looks like she got it all tangled up.

Thunder Fears Be Gone

Bongo Modeling his Anxiety WrapMy person got me an Anxiety Wrap and she said she hopes it will calm me down during thunder. The only thing is she got it at the end of thunder season. I don’t know what she was thinking. I don’t need it now.

Well, my person must have special powers or something because she made the thunderstorms come back so she could try out that anxiety wrap on me. The first part of this week both my people left for the day and they left me with that anxiety wrap on. When they came home my person said she worried about what I would do because there was really loud thunder where she went. I didn’t think it was that bad. Maybe her thunder was louder. I did my usual stuff – eat the cat food, invade the litter box, and mess up my person’s bed – but I didn’t break anything. I swear I didn’t.

My person has been putting that vest on me before she leaves all week. One time she took it off and it started thundering right after that. I think my person made that thunder come so she’d have an excuse to put the vest on me again. I have to admit that the thunder isn’t quite so scary when I have the vest on.

It was really embarrassing though when my person made me go for walks in that vest. I’m sure glad we didn’t see any other dogs. I would have been really upset if they laughed at me.

Get the Frisbee

Bongo and his FrisbeeIt’s October now and the weather is finally getting a little cooler. You know what that means? That means I have more energy to catch more Frisbees. In the summer it’s just too hot. I’ll catch it once or twice and then I’ve had it. I’m ready to go back into the nice, air-conditioned house. I might pick up a soft ball inside and ask my person to throw that for me, but usually I just want to take a nap. A nap on the nice, cool tiles in the bathroom.

But now, I feel like catching a few more Frisbees when I’m outside. Not a lot yet. It’s not quite that cool. But when it does cool off enough I like to wear my person out. She keeps my Frisbee up high where I can’t reach it. She says she doesn’t want me to chew it up, which is a bummer because I love the feeling of chewing on plastic. When I get her to let me out, if she doesn’t grab that Frisbee I remind her by a tilt of my head in the right direction. She knows what I’m talking about.

Pretty soon now it’ll be cool enough and my person will quit before I’m ready to. I don’t know why she gets worn out so easily. After all, in the cool weather we should be able to play Frisbee all day.
