No Smoking

Bongo near a No Smoking signIt’s about time they got serious about this.

People hardly ever leave their litter on my trails, but they do leave cigarette butts.

And those butts stick around until they get covered up with dirt.

And they aren’t even the kind of butts that are good for sniffing.

But my person says the people who put up those signs weren’t even looking at the butts on my trails.

.

.

.

.

Because they don’t want this kind of smoking on my trails again.

Thunder Mountain behind smoke

A long time ago they posted fire restrictions because the fire hazard is so high right now.

And those restrictions include no smoking outside.

But for some reason wildfires don’t pay attention to signs.

And neither do some cigarette smokers.

So they had to put up great big signs.

Bongo sniffing near No Smoking sign

Hey person, I’ll be along in a minute.

I’m checking to see if there are any messages about people not seeing this sign.

Stealing My Rocks

Thunder Mountain behind smokeThere has been some real mischief going on around here this weekend.

Someone is trying to steal my red rocks.

I looked outside and they were slowly fading away.

They came back later in the day, but whoever was after them must be really persistent.

.

.

.

.

Because the next morning they were hardly there at all.

Sedona rocks covered in smoke

I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Without my rocks this place won’t be the same.

Look at this!

Sedona Rocks covered in smoke

My person says there’s a fire and it’s the smoke that’s stealing the rocks.

Well, that must be some pretty mischievous smoke.

I’ve never heard of such a thing.

I hope all those firefighters that are fighting that fire can capture all the smoke and send it away.

Because what if that smoke tries to steal something more than my rocks?

Bongo faded out

Like meeeeee!

My Century is Best

Bongo and a century plantYesterday, when my person took her big camera and wouldn’t take me she said she was looking for smoke.

Well yeah, she found that smoke, but that wasn’t the only thing she was looking for.

She went scouting for century plants.

The place where she went to find smoke is also the area where we find lots of century plants this time of year.

But I think my person was being punished for not taking me along.

Because she hardly found any century plants there.

And the best one of all is the one right next to my trail.

The one we’ve been watching grow every day.

My person needs to learn that the best things show up when I’m there with her.

.

So just to prove it, I actually let her take some pictures of my century plant.

But these better be the last pictures she takes – of something that’s not me.

Where there’s Smoke…

Bongo in his kennel chewing on his frogHey, how come I don’t get to go?

That’s not fair.

That big camera always wins out over me.

It’s not like I’m gonna break your camera or anything.

I won’t yank on the leash and pull you over on top of the camera.

Besides, if you fell on your camera wouldn’t it be your fault?

So what are you taking pictures of?

Smoke?

That’s not very interesting.

You should be taking pictures of me.

There’s a fire?

Where?

You can’t leave me in dog jail if there’s a fire.

What if I get stuck in here and I can’t get out?

Those cats would leave the house without me.

You know how they are.

Are you sure it’s not that close?

.

Okay, I’ll look at the pictures.

Coffeepot Rock with smoke in the distance

Yeah, I guess it is far away.

But what if it comes closer?

Smoke from fire in the distance

See, I told you this was gonna come closer.

Let me out of this dog jail and grab onto my leash!

I’ll protect you.

Oh, and leave your big camera at home.

***

P.S. My person says we are safe from this fire, but asks for prayer for the people who have been evacuated from their homes, and for all the firefighters who are fighting this fire. This is the Slide Fire in Oak Creek Canyon in Arizona between Sedona and Flagstaff.

Hazy Gloom

Thunder Mountain under a layer of smokeWhen I looked outside yesterday morning I could barely see the red rocks on my trails. They seemed to be covered in some kind of fog.

But we rarely get fog here. And especially not in June.

A heavy cloud has covered the land.

And not just your ordinary fleecy cloud that fades away when the sun gets hot.

This seems like a cloud of doom. A cloud of destruction.

And that’s what it is.

It’s weighing over me so I’m going to take a break from being funny, or silly, or adventurous today.

Sedona Red Rocks behind smoke

Because what is covering up my rocks is the smoke drifting over from the Yarnell Fire.

This fire has made national news due to the loss of nineteen hotshot firefighters. These young men were husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers. They left families and friends behind who are in deep grief over their loss.

This fire has destroyed about two hundred houses and other buildings in Yarnell, and has caused the evacuation of hundreds of residents in the towns of Yarnell and Peeple’s Valley.

And the fire is still running wild and is nowhere near being contained.

So today, rather than telling you about one of my adventures I’m going to ask for prayer instead.

Please pray for all of those who lost a loved one.

Please pray for all those who have lost a home, and for all those who have been evacuated from their homes.

Shelters have been set up for evacuated animals. Please pray for the animals too.

Please pray for the safety of the many people who continue to fight this fire.

And please pray for rain. Lots of it. We haven’t had rain in so long and it’s so dry here. Our rainy season should start in a few days. Please pray that it starts right away- at least over that fire.

Sedona Red Rocks in smoky haze

Did I do okay, person?

I hope they put that fire out right away because I’m ready for another adventure.

Backyard Mysteries

Bongo looking at the fenceWhen I went out in my backyard last night I was confronted by strange smells, sights, and sounds. All coming from the other side of the fence.

This is the fence that Moe lives on the other side of. Moe likes to bark at me through the fence anytime we’re both outside.

Here’s a picture of Moe – the only time we got to meet without a fence between us.

.

.

Bongo and Moe on the trail

But this wasn’t about Moe this time. Other things were happening in Moe’s yard – and Moe wasn’t even around.

I’ve got a pretty strong sense of smell, but I didn’t even need my special Detective Dog sensory senses. Even my person smelled this one. The smell of smoke emanated (hey person, I don’t even know what that word means) from Moe’s yard.

And then I saw it – right through the cracks in the fence. Bright orange crackling flames – all contained in one little spot.

My person said it looked like a campfire, but I always thought you had to go camping to have a campfire. Is somebody camping in Moe’s backyard?

I’d better check this out.

Bongo peeking down over the short fence

Just pretend I turned on the floodlights for this picture since all this happened in the dark of night.

And then I heard the strangest sound coming from Moe’s yard. It sounded like music. Guitar music and singing. I hear music coming from the radio, or sometimes from my person’s computer, but I’ve never before heard music coming from a yard.

I wonder if they would mind if I sang along.

Smoke Screen

Bongo and a Smoky SkyA few days ago I told you about the smoky skies we had because of a fire burning a few miles away. Well, the smoke finally went away, the dogs and people got to go back to their houses, and even though the fire is not out completely they have it pretty much in control.

But today our sky was really smoky. It wasn’t just coming from one direction, it was everywhere. I don’t get it. If that fire is almost out, where is the smoke coming from?

My person got online and found out where that smoke originated (is that a word?). And do you believe it? New Mexico doesn’t want their smoke so they’re sending it to us. Talk about throwing your garbage into your neighbor’s yard.

If New Mexico wants to break records and have the biggest fire they’ve ever had in their history, then they need to take everything that goes with it. After all, we didn’t want to break any records. We’re putting our fires out, and we kept our smoke here.

I think I may have to get a new hat for my collection. I’m going to have to become Inventor Dog. I want to invent a giant net that will gather up all that smoke, or maybe a big screen will do it. I could call it a smoke screen.

And once I have all that smoke gathered up I’m going to put it on a big truck and haul it back to New Mexico.

Gray Skies – No Clouds

Smoky SkyThe sky is gray today, but there’s not a cloud in it. I don’t get it. I thought clouds were what made the sky gray. How can it be gray without clouds? Did somebody wash out the blue?

The mountains are kind of faded out and the red rocks aren’t as red. What’s going on?

I’ve never been to any of those places, but I heard that in Los Angeles, or Tokyo, or Mexico City sometimes the sky does the same thing. Maybe all those tourists we get here turned the sky gray with all their vehicle exhaust.

What? There’s what causing that gray sky?

Smoke? Where would smoke come from?

Fire? What fire? Is it coming here? It’s not going to burn up my trails, is it?

Whew! My person says the fires are a long way from here.

What about the people where the fires are? Do they have any dogs that need help? I wouldn’t want any dogs to get in the way of those fires.

Oh, that’s good. All the dogs have been taken to a safe place. But the dogs and the people had to leave their homes? I wouldn’t like it if somebody made us leave our home. Maybe we should let all the dogs stay with us. That would be awesome. All those dogs here at my house. We could have a dog party. Wouldn’t that be fun, person?

I think I’ll go out right now and leave a message for all those dogs, letting them know that this is where they’re supposed to be.

Hey person, can you get my leash?

Hey person, where did you go?
