Not My Fault

Bongo Heading Back on the TrailHey person, you’re going the wrong way. This way takes us back home sooner. We can take this trail.

You’re what? You’re not limping. Let’s go for a longer walk.

What do you mean, it’s my fault?

You could have let me off my leash yesterday so I could get to my swimming hole faster. So it was your fault. You didn’t let me off my leash.

Or you could have run down that steep trail. That way I wouldn’t have been pulling you.

I can’t help it if you started slipping on those loose rocks on that steep trail. I bet you would have slipped even if I wasn’t pulling you.

So I’m getting blamed and punished. Just because we got to go on a long hike yesterday you’re making me have a shorter walk today. No fair!

Oh look person. It’s my friend Timmy. Can I go over and say hi to him?

What? You mean if we had gone on our normal walk I wouldn’t have seen Timmy today? Yeah, I guess you’re right.

Timmy and Bongo

But person, he kissed me. And he’s not even a cute girl.

Where’s the Vandal?

Cairn Knocked Over

This is wrong. This is totally wrong. Someone knocked down the trail marker. Now people are going to get lost on the trails. They’ll go the wrong way.

I’d better investigate. Maybe I can find some clues.

Bongo Checking the Knocked Over Cairn

No unusual smells here.

This one here is still standing, but there’s something strange about it.

Bongo Checking Out Cairn

Look. A clue. What is it person?

A tent bag? You mean the guilty culprit camped out here?

Bongo Checking the Clue

This one’s still standing, but it’s starting to lean over.

Bongo Checking the Leaning Over Cairn

Oh look! Another one down.

Bongo Checking Another Downed Cairn

I think they went that a way.

Bongo Looking Past the Downed Cairn

Hey person. I think I found something. I’ve never seen tracks like this on my trails before.

Horse Shoe Prints

I think this is it. Now I’ve just got to figure out what kind of creature has feet like this.

I know one thing for sure. If I find a creature that went the wrong way, has strange looking feet, and is hanging out inside a dome tent, he’s the guilty one for sure.

Stuck in the Valley

The HillThere’s a little valley on my trails that goes down, and then it goes right back up. At the bottom, if it’s been raining there’s a little tiny stream that flows into a wash. If there’s water there its fun to get my feet wet, but my person usually steps over it. She just doesn’t know how to have fun.

What I really like to do is run down that trail building up speed, and then run right back up the other side. I should be able to get all the way to the top that way without any effort at all.

There’s a problem though. A really serious problem. And it’s called My Person. She won’t run. She just keeps plugging along at her same old usual pace. So what happens to me?

I’m running up that hill and I hit the wall. Except the wall is behind me. It’s called “the end of my leash.” All that wasted energy. I’ve still got to go the rest of the way up the hill and all I can do is plod along at my person’s speed. All because she won’t step up the pace and run along with me.

Maybe I should put her on a leash and see how she likes it.

Dammed Up

Bongo exploring the puddle with the new damI’m busy investigating. You see, when I was out walking on the trails today and I stopped by my puddle I found that somebody had dammed it up.

At first I thought maybe my puddle had been visited by beavers, but my person told me that beavers don’t use rocks as their building materials – and besides I’ve never seen a beaver anywhere near my puddle.

I hope I can find some clues as to who built this dam in my puddle. There might have been some puny puddle people who showed up in the middle of the night and wanted a larger puddle. The puddle is changing because of the dam. There are now green plants floating in it. Maybe the puddle will change into a lake now and I’ll have a swimming hole.

That would be so cool – to have a swimming hole on my trails. Unless those puny puddle people decided to turn into large lake lizards and try to share the swimming hole with me. I’m not sure how that would work out.

I think I’ll wade across now and hit the trail on the other side.

Suds

Bongo checking out the sudsToday I was walking along on my trails minding my own business when suddenly I saw it. It couldn’t have been snow – the rain from the last couple days washed away the little traces that were left. It was something more unusual that that.

My puddle, which had been getting pretty scungy, now had water flowing into and out of it and it was much cleaner. But then, when I passed by my puddle and followed the little stream running away from it – I found it.

At the bottom of a rock, sitting there in all its white foaminess, I found a pile of suds. At first I thought it was snow, but it was much too frothy for that.

So maybe it wasn’t the water running through it that cleaned up my puddle. Maybe, just maybe, someone gave my puddle a bath. I never heard of giving a puddle a bath, but here you have it. First class evidence.

Or maybe someone thinks I need a bath, and they put those suds there so I would scrub myself before heading back home. No, that can’t possibly be. It’s got to be the puddle they were cleaning. I wish I had a camera hanging on a nearby tree. I want to know who that person was that gave my puddle a bath.

Strange Behavior

Partial EclipseMy person behaved very strangely today. She got up while it was still dark. Sometimes she does that, but this time she put on her hiking boots and started heading out the door. Well of course I wasn’t about to let her go without me so I got up too.

We headed for the trails and it was still so dark my person needed a flashlight. And she was stopping and taking pictures. What the heck? I think there’s something wrong with my person. I’ve never seen her act this way.

We started heading toward the trail that goes up Sugarloaf. Then my person changed her mind. She said something about the moon hiding behind Thunder Mountain when we walked that direction. Since when has she ever cared where the moon was before?

I don’t know what had gotten into my person because then she took me up toward a ridge but we weren’t even on a real trail. Come on person – there is a trail up here where you don’t have to walk right next to cactus and jump over rocks. You just have to go back down to the road first.

We hung out on that ridge for awhile and my person took more pictures, but she said she needed to get a better camera – and a telephoto lense (whatever that is). It started getting light and my person said we could go back home now – that the moon had sunk behind Thunder Mountain right before it went into total eclipse.

I’m not sure what she was talking about, but by then it didn’t matter. All I cared about was getting back to my warm bed – and the rabbit that ran across the street in front of us.

Love on the Trail

Getting LoveToday was the coolest day on my walk. It was cool outside but that was okay. My person put her jacket on and I was warm enough, but that’s not the kind of cool I meant. Not only did I get a walk today, but I got lots of loving too.

At the trailhead we met four guys with cameras. My person said they looked like they might be from Japan. I think one of them took my picture. Maybe he has a famous blog and I’ll be on it.

But that wasn’t the best part. When we pass people on the trail my person always pulls me to the side and lets the other people pass. She won’t let me go near anyone unless they come to me first. She said something about some people not liking dogs. I’m not sure what she’s talking about. Everybody likes dogs – don’t they? At least they should all like people loving dogs.

Well today, three separate people came up to me and gave me love. Three, mind you. Some days we don’t even see three people on the trail. It was the best!

Come on person. I know you’ve got a flashlight. I’m ready to go back for more.

Half a Hike

Bongo Hiking in the DarkIt’s not fair! Only half a hike. I only got half a hike. It’s all my person’s fault. She got home late, and she said if we went out any longer we’d be coming home by flashlight. That’s okay by me. I’ll hold the flashlight. She wouldn’t go for it.

You know what she was doing? She was helping a friend – a little friend – younger than my younger person, to set up a blog. After all that I’ve taught my person about blogging, she goes and teaches it to someone else, and then comes home late. She goes off and blogs with someone else and then cuts into my time. How ungrateful can you get?

I know what I’ll do. I’ll invite this little friend over here and I’ll tell her she owes me half a hike. Actually I think I’ll hit her up for a hike and a half, because I’ll have another hike coming by then. I’m getting excited already. I think I have a new hiking buddy. My person can go off on her own.

Devil’s Kitchen

Bongo on the TrailI’m beat. My person did it to me again. We went out for our walk, but when we got to the place we normally turn back we went the other way. We go that way sometimes, but not very often. We walked along for awhile on the trail and then my person took me on another trail. She said she’d never been on this trail before, but she was taking me someplace special. She’d been there, but she’d taken her car and walked on a much shorter trail. We could have gone in the car. I wouldn’t mind.

This new trail wasn’t bad. It was mostly downhill so we could go fast. I tried to follow a couple coyote trails that I smelled, but my person said it wasn’t the right way. How did she know? She said she’d never been on this trail before.

We didn’t see many people on the way, but I heard some strange voices coming out of Coffee Pot Rock. They were all tinny and echoey. I didn’t know that that rock could talk.

Coffee Pot Rock

Well the rock got quiet when we walked around its base. I guess we scared it. I almost didn’t recognize the rock. It looks different when you’re that close.

Under Coffee Pot Rock

Under Coffee Pot Rock

The trail went past a really cool house.

House

One little part of the trail was actually a road and we had to get out of the way when a couple vehicles came by. It was hard enough to walk up and down that road. All steep and rocky. Those vehicles were going very slow.

We finally got to the special place. I ran right up to the edge to check it out. It was nothing but a big hole in the ground. My person said it’s called Devil’s Kitchen. An underground part became hollow first and then the whole thing fell in.

After checking out that hole we headed back home. My person didn’t tell me we were going to have to go uphill.

Almost Up the Chimney

My person totally confused me today. Normally when we go for a walk we make a big loop – going out on one trail and back home on another. Today we got to the place where we usually turn around and go back – but we didn’t go back. My person took me on a trail I’ve never been on before and we kept walking further away from our house. I wasn’t sure what to think, but it was fun finding new smells. My person likes to drag me along when I’ve stopped for a good smell, but this time I kept trying to drag her more than she was dragging me. She kept stopping and getting her camera out. I’d be walking along and suddenly come to the end of my leash.

My person took me to a rock called Chimney Rock. You can probably figure out why it’s called that.

Chimney Rock

To get there we had to walk through some dry washes. They only have water in them when it rains.

Bongo in a Dry Wash

When we got around the side of Chimney Rock it looked different. Instead of one big rock it looked like three.

Chimney Rock from the Side

We got to the top of the trail and it went back down the other side, so we stopped and rested before coming back the way we’d gone up. Someone was nice enough to leave a stick up there for me. I tried to get my person to throw it so I could go after it, but she said I might fall down the steep hill. I couldn’t convince her otherwise.

My person kept stalling on the way home – getting her camera out for more pictures.

It’s a good thing they had the trail marked. I could find it by the smell, but I think my person might have gotten lost.

I guess It was good my person took her time, or we wouldn’t have seen this.
