They Came out of Hiding

Bongo on a Slippery SlopeMy younger person came with us on my trails today. My person wanted to show him the elusive century plant.

I’m not sure how she’s going to do that. I haven’t found that century plant anywhere. I’m starting to wonder if it even exists. Maybe my person is making it up. She does make things up sometimes.

I think she just told my younger person there was a century plant on my trails so he would come out with us. Usually he doesn’t want to come.

I guess by the time he figures out that there isn’t a century plant on my trails it’ll be too late. He’ll already have had his walk.

Come on younger person, let’s go. There’s sure to be a century plant out there somewhere.

Hey, wait a minute. This wasn’t here yesterday.

This wasn’t here either.

You mean there’s more?

I’d better take my younger person with me on all my walks. Somehow he got that elusive century plant to come out of hiding.

Fenced Out

Water TankMy person and I went on an extra long walk on my trails today. We were looking for the elusive century plant. My person says they’re called that because they only bloom once a century, so they’re really hard to find.

But we walked along and walked along looking for those century plants and there it was.

Not a century plant, but an intruder on my trails. I’m not sure what it is, but I’m going to investigate.

.

Bongo in front of the water tank

This thing is pretty nervy. It must think it owns part of my trails. I tried getting up closer to take a better look, but there was a fence around it. I checked to see if I could find a way to get inside the fence.

I didn’t see any way in.

Bongo at the Fence

So I went over to the other side.

Bongo Looking Through the Fence

I didn’t have any luck there either.

What am I to do? This thing should not be on my trails – especially not with a fence around it.

If I could get to it, it wouldn’t be so bad. At least I could mark it so everybody would know it was mine. I mean, everything on my trails is mine – after all, they are my trails.

So this thing doesn’t have the right to set itself on my trails and construct a fence. This will definitely need some further investigation.

And the worst part is that I got so distracted when this thing showed up that I forgot all about looking for the elusive century plant. I guess I’ll have to go find that another day.

Mystery Monster

Paw PrintSomething large is lurking on my trails. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s big.

I was walking along and I almost stopped in my tracks. This is some footprint.

In case you think this might be a teeny, tiny track and I’m just making this whole story up I thought I’d better have my person take a picture of this next to my paws.

.

.

.

Bongo's Paws Next to Paw Print

See? You didn’t believe me, did you?

The biggest mystery is who this large creature is. I haven’t seen anyone on my trails large enough to fit this track, and I’m not sure I want to.

This creature might be bigger than my person and I combined, and I’m not sure I could defend my person if it showed up.

I thought of putting my Detective Dog hat on and looking for some more clues, but I don’t think I’m going to this time.

I think instead I’ll just listen for some loud plodding sounds on my trails, or look for a head that stands so tall I can see it above the bushes.

And if either of those things happen you know what I’m going to do?

I’m going to stick my tail between my legs, turn around, and go the other way.

No Wash

Bongo heading to the washDo you see anything? Besides me, that is.

Neither do I.

But my person says there’s something there.

That picture is me, heading down the trail to my wash. My person wouldn’t let me go there. She made me go on my regular trails today.

Why? She made up some lame excuse about something you can’t see. Invisible things that fly around and irritate you. Little bad spirits or something.

She says they always show up around this time of year and they just showed up today. I don’t even notice them. I think my person made them up. She says they’re all over my trails but they’re worse in my wash.

She could have come up with a better story if she didn’t want to go in my wash. Like a giant flood on its way that might overtake us, or a mountain lion lurking behind a tree waiting to jump out at us. Or a bunch of coyotes waiting to lure me into their pack. But no, she made up a sad story about invisible things. She even has a name for them. She calls them “no see ‘ems.”

Well, the next time I don’t see a cat, or I don’t see a rabbit, or even a quail, I’m chasing after it anyway. I can play this “no see ‘em” game too.

A Pile of Rocks

Rocks piled on top of each otherThis strange thing showed up in the wash on my trails today. A pile of rocks. It looks like a trail marker but it can’t be. The wash isn’t a trail. It’s just a cool place with lots of good smells that I like to walk in.

And sometimes when it rains the wash turns into a stream. It washes away all the cool smells and brings in new ones. But that’s why this new thing can’t be a trail marker.

Can you imagine a trail marker in the middle of a stream? Maybe if there were stepping stones and it marked the best path, but all there is in that spot are small rocks and sand .

What kind of person would put that trail marker there?

.

Bongo looking at the rock pile

Maybe they were lost and figured if they ended up going in circles they would know it. You think they’d figure it out by the smells though.

Or maybe they put it there as a target for birds. The birds could fly right over and aim at it. As long as they’re not aiming at my head that’s okay. I guess they shouldn’t aim at my person’s head either.

Oh, wait a minute. I just figured it out. One of my friends left this here.

It’s a new message post. Now I don’t have to sniff all over to see which of my friends has been in the wash lately.

Trail Lost and Found

Hat on a rockMy person says that lots of places have a special department called Lost and Found. My trails have one of those departments too.

There’s a special rock at the beginning of my trails and when people find something that was dropped they take it to the special rock and leave it there.

Most people come out the same way to get back to their car or their house. Sometimes they find what they dropped at the Trail Lost and Found.

But sometimes the people are just as lost as the thing they lost. Sometimes they are lucky just to find their car and when they do they are so happy to have found it again they go right past the Trail Lost and Found without seeing their lost stuff.

I’m not sure what to do about this. If too much stuff piles up in the Trail Lost and Found the wind is going to move it to a new place and the Trail Lost and Found will be lost until we find it again.

And if we don’t find it soon enough a pack rat might take all the lost stuff to pad its nest. Then we might never find the Trail Lost and Found and it will be lost forever.

I think I’d better do something about this. I could get rich while I’m at it. I’ll stand guard at the Trail Lost and Found until the lost people come and find their stuff. Then I’ll charge them lots of loves for guarding their lost stuff until they found it.

Who’s on My Trails?

Bongo sniffing clothes on the trailHey person, there’s stuff on this trail marker. It smells interesting. What is it?

It has people smell on it, but not somebody I know. What is this stuff?

It is? It’s somebody’s pants and shirt?

Oh, no. You know what that means? That means there’s somebody naked on my trails. Why would somebody want to be naked on my trails?

Watch out person. The naked person might be hiding in the bushes nearby. You’d better close your eyes. These bushes aren’t very thick. That person might be embarrassed to be seen.

Why would that person want to be naked anyway? I know it’s a nice, warm day. People don’t need clothes today to stay warm. Those clothes look pretty warm. Maybe that person got too warm and decided to go naked.

Or maybe a vicious dog was on that person’s track and that person had to distract the dog.

Yikes! That means there might be a naked person and a vicious dog on my trails. One of them could jump out at us at any time.

This is not good. I’ve got to protect you, person. Come on, I’m taking you home.

Who’s Lassie?

LassieOn my trails today I met a family. They were very nice and they gave me loves. My person and I walked on and then headed back home on a different trail.

We were walking along, minding our own business, when we noticed someone following us. Not many people use the trail we were on so it’s unusual to find somebody following us. Well, the people caught up with us and guess what! It was that family again. The one that had given me loves.

They were lost. They didn’t know how to get back to their car, so they decided they would follow me.

I felt pretty cool about that, but then they started calling me Lassie.

Lassie? Who’s Lassie? Don’t they know my name is Bongo? They should know that. After all, I’m famous.

My person had to explain who Lassie is and she found a picture of Lassie for me. Hey, wait a minute! Lassie looks like my friends the Collies. I don’t look like Lassie at all.

It’s a good thing I helped that family find their way back to their car. They were really confused. If it hadn’t been for me they might still be walking in circles on my trails.

No Dog Day?

Bongo and his FriendsWoo hoo! It was an awesome day on my trails today. The weather was perfect and the parking lot full – which meant I had a chance to meet lots of people and dogs. We headed out on the trails and met a whole lot of people coming back the other way, but no dogs. I like people, but I really like meeting dogs on my trails, so I started getting a little disappointed thinking this might be a no dog day.

Well, I was wrong – so wrong. We headed a little further along the trails and guess who showed up to greet me. You’ll never guess. The best dog ever! Lucy. My girlfriend – at least I want her to be my girlfriend. And we got to play. That is the most fun a dog can have. Playing with his girlfriend – except maybe for swimming, and eating, and catching Frisbees. Well, you know what I mean. I had fun.

Lucy headed on down the trails and I started feeling disappointed, but I hardly had a chance to feel that way because two more dogs came running to greet me. And my person knows their people, so now I have two new friends.

I would have made more friends but the other dogs were on leashes and our people wouldn’t let us get close. My person had to give directions to one person who had a dog. I could give directions to that person too. Just let your dog’s leash loose and follow along.

New Adventure – New Friend

Pablo and BongoMy person let me get into the car with her today. The little car, not the big one. She usually takes me to the vet in the little car. Maybe I’m going to get more loves and treats.

Hmmm. We don’t usually go this far in the car when we go to the vet’s. I wonder where we’re going.

Finally, we’re stopping. Hey, there’s a little dog here. I recognize this dog. I’ve smelled him on you before person. He’s getting in the car with us too?

Bongo looking at Pablo in the front seat

Hey, how come Pablo gets to ride in front?

We rode for a little while – with me in the back and Pablo in the front – and then all of us got out of the car. It’s a trail!

Bongo and Pablo on the trail

I’ll give you a head start Pablo.

Bongo tangled around a post

Hey Pablo, wait for me!

Bongo and Bell Rock

Hey person, hurry up. What is that thing up there?

It’s a rock? Bell Rock? It looks like a giant UFO.

Really? Some people think a real UFO is going to come out of that rock? I wonder if any aliens look like dogs.

Bongo Leading the Way

Hey person, the trail goes this way.

What are you looking at?

Hey Pablo, I think our people have been looking at these rocks long enough. Let’s take them back to the car now.
