The People Trap

Penny on the TrailYou want me to sniff what so you can take a picture?

A lucky penny on my trail? I don’t even know what a lucky penny is. And it has absolutely no sniffing appeal at all. You sniff it.

What’s it doing on my trails anyway? Especially this one. Hardly anyone walks on this trail? When was the last time you saw somebody while we were walking on this trail?

You know what, person? I bet someone put that penny there on purpose. It’s like people bait.

If somebody put treats down I’d chomp them up, and follow the trail looking for more. If a kid put Reese’s Pieces on the trail there’d be an ET following along for sure.

English: Loose Reese's Pieces candies.

But if somebody puts a penny on the trail, some person is going to pick it up and probably look for more.

I don’t know what it is with you people. What’s the attraction of those little round metal things? They don’t smell good, they don’t taste good, and they don’t even look good – at least not the dirty old ones you find on trails.

You’d better watch it person. Someone’s going to leave a trail of those things and lead you into a trap.

Yeah, I know I said I’d follow treats. But I wouldn’t mind being led into a treat trap. Who’d want to be in a trap full of little round metal things?

Hey person, never mind what I said. You just keep looking for those lucky pennies. And take lots of pictures of them.

I just found a weed trap.

Let me know when you’re ready to go.

Missing Trails

Bongo in an empty parking lotSomething is strange here. There are no cars in the parking lot of my trails. This worries me. Yesterday there was a travelling Trails sign here in the parking lot and it’s gone. I think my fears have come true. Everybody followed that sign and now they’re walking on different trails. There’s nobody left here to give me loves. This is terrible!

Well, I’m going to go out on my trails anyway – sign or no sign. After all, they’re still my trails even if nobody else is on them.

At least, I think they’re my trails. Everything looks different today.

What happened to all the dust on my trails? It’s not here anymore. It’s vanished.

Bongo and some water across the trail

And look at this! My trails are leaking water. I don’t remember seeing water on my trails. Where’s all this water coming from? Is somebody crying? They must be very sad.

Bongo in a Puddle on the Trail

Look at this big wet spot – right in the middle of my trail. It’s cold too. Where did this come from? I don’t think this is my trail at all. Did my trails leave with that travelling sign? What am I going to do without my trails?

Cloudy Sky and Red Rocks

There’s something else missing. Where’s the blue sky? My sky is always blue. What happened to it?

Thunder Mountain with a little snow on top

Is there something strange about Thunder Mountain? Look, the color is missing on top. It looks like someone took a giant eraser and erased the color. Now it’s all white up there.

What am I going to do? What if that eraser comes down and starts erasing everything? It might even erase me!

Yikes! I’d better get out of here.

Bongo looking at a trail of water

Hey, look down there. Is that what I think I see?

Bongo in Puddle

It’s my puddle! You’re back, puddle! I think I finally figured out why my puddle leaves.

My puddle is shy. My puddle doesn’t like it when there are lots of people and dogs around.

Puddle, I think you’d better be careful though. A giant eraser is after us. If you’re not careful you might be disappearing again before you’re ready.

I’m on my way now.

Bongo sniffing muddy paw prints

Look at this! Somebody else has been here. There’s been a dog on my trails but he’s not here anymore.

I think that eraser got him.

Travelling Trails Sign

Bongo by a license plate that says TRA1LSI was heading out to my trails minding my own business, when all of a sudden I stopped in my tracks. Something new had appeared. A travelling sign pointing people to my trails.

This is good. This will make it easier for people to find my trails. And that means more people on my trails to give me loves.

But, wait a minute! There’s something wrong with this picture. This is a travelling Trails sign. Won’t that confuse people?

People will see the sign that points to my trails, but  when they come back again the sign might be gone, and the people will think my trails have disappeared.

How terrible!

People will go somewhere else, trying to find that Trails sign again. And there won’t be any people on my trails to give me loves.

And when that sign points to different trails, some other dog will be getting all the loves.

                                                                             ***

I’ve got an idea.

I’d better make sure the people with this travelling Trails sign aren’t looking though.

Bongo looking around the car with the TRA1LS license plate

The coast is clear. I don’t see anyone coming.

Quick, does anyone have a tow truck?

If I tow away the travelling part, the sign will stay here forever.

Little Black Bags

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat onDetective Dog here – and I’ve got another mystery to solve.

I’ve noticed something when I’ve been out on my trails. Little black bags.

.

.

.

.

Little black bag on top of a cairn

I see them everywhere. Like this one in plain sight.

Little black bag on the side of the trail

Look at this one. Somebody left it on the side of the trail.

Little black bag in the bushes

And this one’s hiding in the middle of some bushes. Well, it’s not really hiding. Maybe if it was summer they would have been able to conceal this here.

So now I have the evidence. Three little black bags in three days.

And the funny thing is these bags are always missing the next time I come by. Well, most of the time they’re missing. I guess sometimes somebody forgets one.

So now I’ve got to figure out what these little black bags are for. And why are they getting left on my trails?

Maybe they’re munchies in case somebody gets really hungry while they’re on my trails.

But that can’t be it. If they were munchies I’d be eating them and I don’t see anything attractive about these little black bags.

So I’ll have to look for some more clues.

What do they have in common – besides being little, and black, and bags?

I’ve got it. Flies! They all have flies buzzing around them. I wonder why.

***

Excuse me a minute – I’ve got to take a break.

***

Hey person, what are you doing with that little black bag? It looks a lot like the ones I’ve been investigating.

What are you doing, person? Don’t put that in the little black bag. I left that there for a reason.

Now you’re getting me upset and it’s messing up my whole investigation.

Official Trail Guide

Bongo Leading New Friend on the TrailsWoo woo! I’m official now. I’m really an official trail guide. I got to lead my friend who came to visit me on my trails today. I made her hold on tight to my leash so she wouldn’t get lost.

.

.

.

.

.

.

But I had to have a lot of patience with her. I tried to run so she could see as much of my trails as possible before it got dark, but whatever I did, I couldn’t get her to run with me. I kept having to wait for her.

Bongo Looking Back

I showed my friend where all the good smells are. I tried to get her to check them out for herself, but she just wouldn’t do it. I can’t figure out why. She’s missing out on the best part of the tour.

Bongo smelling something while friend waits

I wanted to make sure my friend got the full Arizona experience, so I made sure she brushed against some cactus.

Prickly Pear Cactus

I’m not sure why it’s so important to people, but my person said to make sure I took my new friend where she could see lots of red rocks, so I even took her to see the best scenic views.

Sedona Red Rocks at Sunset

But I seem to be having a problem now. My official fee for giving tours of my trails is lots of loves, but I wore my new friend out so much that she doesn’t have any energy left to give them to me. Next time I give a tour I’m collecting my fee in advance.

Dots in the Dirt

Bongo Looking at the TrailThe dirt on my trails looks a little different today. I don’t know why, but there are dots in it.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Those dots don’t smell any different.

.

Bongo's nose and dots in the dirt

So where did they come from?

Did someone take a stick and poke it all over my trails? They must have poked pretty fast because they made a lot of dots.

Maybe they had a large sheet of dots and they went along my trails pressing it in everywhere.

But why would they do that? Did they think I was so bored that I needed something to do in my Detective Dog hat?

Well, you’ve got something coming if you think that. Anyone who would take time to put all those dots on my trails must be really bored. Don’t you have anything better to do?

What, person? What do you mean, God made those dots?

Those are from raindrops? Raindrops make mud – and puddles. Since when do they make dots?

It’s not even wet. Shouldn’t there be tiny puddles in the raindrop dots?

Follow Me Anywhere

Bongo on the Steep TrailOne of my favorite things to do on my trails is to go walking in the wash. My person used to follow me in there when I wanted to go.

But now when I try to head down the trail to the wash she holds back and won’t go with me. Just because it’s steep with loose rocks and she slipped on them once.

I tried to help her up when she slipped, but she wouldn’t go for it. She was sitting there in the dirt and I jumped all over her trying to get a good hold so I could help her up.

And you know what she did? She pushed me off of her. What kind of gratitude is that? I’m trying to help her and she pushes me away.

She did get back up on her own and we went the rest of the way down the trail and into the wash. But she won’t go down that trail anymore.

I tricked her though. A little ways past that trail is another trail that goes into the wash. It’s not as steep and doesn’t have as many loose rocks. I guess my person doesn’t notice that we’re still going into the wash because I head that way and she just follows along.

Bongo on the Less Steep Trail

I wonder where else I could get her to follow.

Don’t Leave it Behind

Bongo in front of pad with handlesStrange things keep showing up in my trail lost and found. Check this thing out. It looks like a giant briefcase. I’m not sure if that’s what it is, but if I find a giant suit and tie a ways up my trails I’ll know that’s what it is.

Maybe a salesman came here, wanting to sell feather dusters to all the people on my trails – after all there is a lot of dust here. But when he got to the trailhead he realized nobody was waiting there for him and he’d have to go hiking to find people.

Or maybe a business man got the directions for his corporate meeting mixed up. He got to the trailhead and had to go looking for the meeting.

It’s a what, person? A sleeping pad? You mean someone’s been sleeping on my trails again? I wonder if the person is related to the one who left their sleeping bag here awhile ago.

Is anyone looking right now?

Bongo Looking Around

This’ll teach people not to sleep on my trails.

Bongo Wetting the Pad

I don’t want this to come across wrong, but I think this is appropriate. This post is for Trevor, a recently lost friend from Collies of the Meadow.

Where’s Yoda

Where's YodaMy person and I went out walking in the morning again, but the sun wasn’t as high in the sky as yesterday and it wasn’t so hot. Speaking of sky, my person is still hanging out with all those kids in the sky every night, and she still won’t take me.

Oh, I forgot – I’m supposed to be talking about my walk on the trails.

We were walking along and a lady came jogging toward us. She gave me a little love and said, “Yoda’s back there.”

I was really confused because I always thought Yoda lived in a galaxy far, far away – so I didn’t know what I was going to see. Maybe Yoda has been reading my blog and likes it so much he came all the way here to hang out on my trails with me.

We walked a little further and there he was. But he wasn’t the Yoda from that faraway galaxy. He was a little brown dog, and he was afraid of me. He stood at the top of the rise he’d just come over and wouldn’t come any closer.

I finally got tired of the stand-off and headed toward him, and he ran past me so fast that I barely got a whiff as he made his way down the trail.

Yoda really is in the picture my person put on this post, but you have to look really hard to find him. I think he might be related to Waldo.

Woof

Mornings are Hot

Bongo on the StreetMy person took me out on my trails in the morning again because she’s still hanging out at night with all those kids in the sky that I’m not allowed to hang out with.

I’m not sure I like mornings. It’s too hot. And I tried to give some pesky blue jays what for as they flew by, but the sun was on the wrong side of the sky and I had to look away.

We went on my usual trails and got back to my house and I was ready to go back inside where it was nice and cool.

But my person had other ideas. Sometimes I think she is really crazy. She made me keep walking down the street with her. Come on person, I just want to go inside. Can’t you see I’m hot? Aren’t you hot?

My person took me down the street, and then we went on another street, and another.

And then she got her camera out. Oh no, not this again.

Double Century Plants

Hey person, do these two century plants only come out in the morning? Maybe they need extra heat to grow double.

I think I’ll go back to looking for the single century plants on my trails that come out later in the day. At least then I won’t collapse in the heat.

Can we go home now?
