Angels are Busy

Philippe de Champaigne's The Dream of Saint Jo...

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ – which means, ‘God with us.’” Matthew 1:22-23

There she goes again – putting words on my blog that I didn’t write. Come on person, isn’t this my blog?

More Bible stories? Are there animals? A bunch of my blogging friends told me there would be animals coming in the story you started last week.

What!!! You mean I have to wait one more week before you get to the animals? I think you’re just stringing me along. I think I’ll go lie down on my bed and go to sleep.

Okay, I’ll stay for another angel story. That angel Gabriel was something else though – telling Mary she was going to have a baby while she was still a virgin. I guess I’m listening.

My person started telling me about Joseph. You know, that guy that Mary was engaged to. My person said that marriage customs were different then than they are now. Once two people in Israel in Bible times became engaged, they were committed to each other the same as if they were already married. They had to actually have a divorce to become unengaged. I’m not quite sure I get it. Dogs don’t do that marriage thing.

Anyway, Joseph found out Mary was pregnant and since he followed God and had respected Mary he figured she hadn’t been faithful to him. I bet he was pretty upset. He decided he would divorce her quietly.

But then my person says an angel came to Joseph in a dream. I like the angel that came to Mary better. She was wide awake.

Okay person, I’ll stop making side comments. At least I’ll try.

My person says Joseph didn’t need to be awake because he listened to that angel in his dream. The angel told Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife because her baby came from the Holy Spirit. The angel also said that Mary would have a son and Joseph was to name him Jesus, because the son will save his people from their sins.

I’m not sure what that is that people need saving from. Sins must be something that people have and not dogs. Am I missing out on something here?

Strange Behavior

Partial EclipseMy person behaved very strangely today. She got up while it was still dark. Sometimes she does that, but this time she put on her hiking boots and started heading out the door. Well of course I wasn’t about to let her go without me so I got up too.

We headed for the trails and it was still so dark my person needed a flashlight. And she was stopping and taking pictures. What the heck? I think there’s something wrong with my person. I’ve never seen her act this way.

We started heading toward the trail that goes up Sugarloaf. Then my person changed her mind. She said something about the moon hiding behind Thunder Mountain when we walked that direction. Since when has she ever cared where the moon was before?

I don’t know what had gotten into my person because then she took me up toward a ridge but we weren’t even on a real trail. Come on person – there is a trail up here where you don’t have to walk right next to cactus and jump over rocks. You just have to go back down to the road first.

We hung out on that ridge for awhile and my person took more pictures, but she said she needed to get a better camera – and a telephoto lense (whatever that is). It started getting light and my person said we could go back home now – that the moon had sunk behind Thunder Mountain right before it went into total eclipse.

I’m not sure what she was talking about, but by then it didn’t matter. All I cared about was getting back to my warm bed – and the rabbit that ran across the street in front of us.

Me – Scary?

Rocks in FogShortly after my person and I hit the trails it started raining. It was cold too – cold for us, that is. But we’re troopers so we headed on out. We could have gone back home – it wasn’t far – but what fun is that?

I didn’t think we’d see anyone on the trails. Nobody much comes out when it’s rainy and getting dark.

Well, my person was taking some pictures of the disappearing rocks before they disappeared completely in fog and I was hanging out on the trail waiting for her. Very patiently mind you. I heard some footsteps coming toward me and around the bend here comes a guy running along on the trail. He was pretty cool, but right behind him here comes the good part.

Behind that running guy was a little black dog – about the size of Scratchy. No, that dog was smaller than Scratchy because Scratchy is a pretty big cat. And that little black dog was afraid of me.

I wasn’t doing anything. I didn’t think I looked that scary. No dog’s been afraid of me before – but that dog was. He wouldn’t go by me until my person grabbed my collar and pulled me aside. Then he crept by on the far side of the trail. Slowly, slowly he crept until he made it completely past me. He went a little ways and then looked back to make sure I wasn’t following him. Then off he ran after his person.

I wonder what he’d have done if my person had let me run after him?

Where are the Toys?

Bongo's Toys in the YardSince we’ve had snow in our yard and I’ve been stopping to eat it whenever I go outside I’ve been forgetting to do something. I can’t carry my Frisbee around and eat snow too, so I have to put my Frisbee down somewhere. Then I forget to bring it back in.

That doesn’t do me much good when it’s time to go out again. My person is supposed to grab the Frisbee so she can toss it for me. She keeps telling me it’s already out in the yard. She could go out there and get it, but she doesn’t.

I’ve got to have something with me when I go outside so I grab one of my squeaky toys. When I’m heading out the door my person tells me to drop it. She says it’s an indoor toy, and of course I’m very obedient so I drop my toy. My person didn’t tell me I couldn’t pick it up again.

I’ve just got one problem now. I haven’t been able to talk my person into getting me some more indoor toys.

Snow Treat

Bongo Eating SnowWe still have a little snow left in our yard – I hope it never goes completely away, because it’s a real treat. Every time I go outside I eat some of it. Sometimes I even bug my person to let me outside just so I can eat it.

My person thinks I’ve got to go out for other reasons but I don’t. It’s fun to go out and eat more of that crunchy, cold, white stuff. It’s even better now than when it first showed up because it’s frozen. Harder than snow, but not as hard as ice. Perfect.

I can never get enough of it though. I eat a little bit and my person tells me I’ve had enough cold stuff and it will make my insides turn all shivery. I don’t know why that matters. I can always go in the house and warm up again, but she grabs me by the collar and pulls me away from my special treat.

At least I can grab a little more snow on the stairs on the way in. I’m sure glad my person doesn’t have a shovel.

Rejected or Accepted?

Bongo on the Squishy Mud TrailI’m so disappointed. My snow is going away. But that’s not all bad because now there is lots and lots of squishy mud on my trails.

I met a dog on the trails today who wanted to play with me, but every time he got too close he would change his mind and run off the other way.

Rejection!!!

But then I remembered that one of my blogging friends that I recently met gave me an award. The Kreativ Blogger Award. The friend who gave me this award is Patrecia aka misswhiplash. She lives in Bulgaria and has five dogs, two donkeys, and a cat with three legs. Her posts are a lot of fun to read and you can find them at http://misswhiplash.wordpress.com.

I’ve never seen this award before which means I can pass it on to some of my bestist favoritist blogging friends (that I haven’t already passed an award to) and maybe this will be the first time they receive it. I know there are still lots of other blogs I love – I wish I could pick all of you.

But first I’m supposed to tell you 10 things about myself that you wouldn’t know. This is really hard. I tell you everything – well, almost everything. So I’ll tell you 10 things that some of my newer friends might not know.

1                     My people rescued me from the Sedona Humane Society about six years ago.

2                     I pretend I don’t like Scratchy (the cat) but I really do. (Don’t pass this on.)

3                     I’m deathly afraid of thunder.

4                     I don’t like olives.

5                     I get really upset when Scratchy steals my blog.

6                     I love squeaky toys.

7                     I get to stay inside most of the time because I’m an escape dog.

8                     I love kids who stand about my height – but most of them say I’m a slobbery dog.

9                     Catching Frisbees is one of my favorite things to do – and I’m really good at it.

10                 I really enjoy getting to meet so many dogs and people because of my blog.

Now I get to pass on this award to six of my blogging friends. I’m picking dogs again, so if you’re a blogging person I still love you, but I seem to have this affinity for other dog’s blogs. Maybe it has something to do with…?

I think Bassa was the first dog to find me when I started blogging, which was a real encouragement to me. She has been one of my favorite dog blogging friends ever since. She is a Caucasian Shepherd dog who lives in Tbilisi, Georgia (the country – not the state). Bassa and her tall person take walks through and report on their neighborhood, which is very different from the neighborhood where I live. Bassa’s blog is at http://bassasblog.wordpress.com/.

Rumpy also found me very soon after I started blogging. Rumpy is a malamute with some very fascinating blog posts including interviews with some interesting animals from all over the world. Rumpy even interviewed me. Rumpy sometimes allows DeDe the dog to give advice on the blog and June Buggie the cat to get on the blog and rant. You can find Rumpy at http://rumpydog.wordpress.com/.

I found Lola when her person let her be a guest blogger. She was blogging about hiking in my home town. Lola knows where to hike for sure. Last month Lola got to be a guest blogger quite often because her person was busy writing for NaNoWriMo (where you have to write a 50,000 word novel all in the month of November). Lola and her person can be found at http://sharyhover.com/.

The 2 Brown Dawgs always have some wonderful pictures on their blog and I’ve learned a lot about what a hunting dog does. They will also be adding a puppy to the mix very soon so there will be three brown dawgs. I’m looking forward to more puppy pics which will be coming to http://2browndawgs.com/.

Iowa Dog Blog has great pictures and stories about Duke and Gertie and sometimes other things dogs. A recent post gave great tips on photographing dogs – something my person needs to learn since I’m not always very cooperative. This blog is at http://iowadogblog.wordpress.com

I’m not sure Mumsy is always happy with Chancy’s gardening efforts in Chancy the Gardener, but they are both very sweet and are also joined by several other animals at http://chancythegardner.wordpress.com/

I wish I could give all my friends an award but I’m all worn out now. I think I’ll sleep and get all rested up – so tomorrow I can go out and have more adventures.

Snow Trek

Snow HikeSquishy mud, crunchy snow, and all of it cold. I love going out on the trail on snow days. I have to admit that my person makes better crunches though. She has bigger feet.

I got lots of sniffing time in – and there were some good smells – because my person kept stopping to take pictures. She said she was hoping she would get better lighting, but she kept stopping anyway. It was kind of nice – getting to stop that much. My person hardly ever lets me do that.

We met lots of people on the trail and a couple dogs. They were all out enjoying the snow like we were. One man even gave my person a heart. I thought he should give it to me, but I guess my person needs a heart too. I think she should have given it to me after I was good with those dogs though. I didn’t growl or anything.

Heart Rock in Snow

Back to my sniffing now. I’m doing it for my person – so she can keep taking pictures.

Mary Did You Know?

Mary and JesusFor to us a son is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6

Hey, what are those words doing on my blog? I didn’t write that.

Okay person, what are you doing? What? I know it’s the Christmas season. Time for presents and a Christmas tree. Hey, how come our tree’s not up yet?

Christmas is what? The time we celebrate Jesus’ birth? What happened to Santa Claus? And you still haven’t told me why those words are on my blog.

Those words came from where?

My person says those words were written by a prophet named Isaiah about the coming messiah (the what?) about 700 years before Jesus’ birth.

Okay, so what does that have to do with anything?

Jesus was the messiah Isaiah was talking about? How could Isaiah know that 700 years before it happened?

My person says that God sometimes speaks to people in special ways.

He doesn’t talk to me. Okay person, where are the animals in this story?

No animals! I’m outta here. I started walking away and my person told me to wait. She said there are lots of animals in the story but we won’t get to that part today. She promised me an angel though. I’ve never met an angel so I thought maybe I’d stick around and see if it was worth it.

My person told me that a very important person in the Bible was a young woman named Mary. She said Mary was engaged to a man named Joseph and was probably younger than my younger person at the time of this story. She said Mary was probably a teenager.

Mary had a special visit from an angel named Gabriel. My person said Gabriel showed up more than once in the Bible, but this time it was Mary’s turn for a visit. I wonder if Gabriel ever visits dogs.

Well Gabriel told Mary that she had found favor with God and she would give birth to a son and name him Jesus.

Never mind Gabriel, you don’t have to visit me after all. I don’t think I want any puppies hanging around here.

Mary couldn’t figure out how she could have a child since she was a virgin, but Gabriel told her that the Holy Spirit would come upon her, and her child would be called the Son of God.

Wow! What a day. My person said Mary probably thought she’d live a nice quiet life in the little town of Nazareth, but she ended up having all kinds of adventures starting with that visit from Gabriel. She says she’ll tell me more about Mary’s adventures later.

I like adventures, but I’m still waiting for the animals.

Snow Day

Bongo with Frisbee in the SnowYipee! It’s a snow day. My person says the last thing people usually think about when they think of Arizona is snow. She says they think of deserts and cactus – but snow ??? Well, I want to tell you I live in that other part of Arizona. The part nobody thinks about. The part that gets snow – and today we have snow.

The first thing I did when my person let me outside was eat some of it. Not too much. I need to save some to play in. I promise, it wasn’t yellow snow that I was eating. Remember, I said it was the first thing I did when I went out.

My absolute favorite thing to do in the snow is drag my Frisbee around. It slides so well on that slippery white stuff. But I had a problem. Last night before it started snowing I left my Frisbee outside. Now it’s not going to be so easy to find. But wait – here it is!

My person says in dog years I’m getting up there. But I don’t believe her. I’m still a puppy when it comes to snow.

Pricklers

Bongo and a Prickly PearThere are some plants that grow wild around here called prickly pears. The pear part sounds pretty good. I wouldn’t mind eating a few pears. But then there’s that other part. The part that’s called prickly. It’s not by accident that those pears are called prickly. They are full of pricklers. Two kinds of pricklers. Even the pears have pricklers.

There are great big white pricklers. They look pretty nasty. But those aren’t the ones you have to worry about the most. If one of those sticks in you it’s pretty easy to pull out. It’s those little orange pricklers that are the nastiest. They come in clumps and if you brush up against them you don’t get just a prickler or two. You get the whole clump, or at least a good part of it. Those little pricklers don’t come out. You’ve got to use something called tweezers to get at them. And they sting.

I almost got it the other day. I leaned against one of those darn prickly pears without realizing it. My person warned me and then pulled a couple of those pricklers out of my hair. Boy was she lucky I didn’t get any more. She would have had to run home to get the tweezers.

This cactus looks like it loves you, but I think it wants to lure you close to its pricklers.
