Scratchy, Get Down!

Scratchy in the BathroomHey person! Scratchy’s hiding in the bathroom!

I’d get him down for you but I can’t jump that high.

Come on, get him down person. You know what he’s going to do. He thinks we don’t know what he’s up to. As soon as he thinks nobody’s looking he’s going to jump down on the counter and get the frog.

Person, you shouldn’t have left the bathroom door open. It kind of defeats the purpose of leaving the frog in there so Scratchy can’t get him.

Scratchy, get down. I know what you’re up to. You’d better come down because I’m going to chase you as soon as you leave the bathroom.

Wait a minute. Maybe I should let Scratchy get that frog. If he gets the frog out of his container that frog would go hopping all over the house. What fun, pouncing on a hopping frog.

Never mind person, I think Scratchy’s under your bed.

Ghost Dog Revisited

Ghost DogToday my person and I started out on our walk the way we usually do. We turned into the trailhead and there he stood, waiting for us. Ghost Dog. The same Ghost Dog that had invaded my yard awhile back. At least he wasn’t in my yard this time.

Well, Ghost Dog, I guess this is a shared trailhead so I don’t mind (very much) if you’re here. Just don’t go hanging out in my yard anymore.

Ghost Dog came over to say hi and since I wasn’t defending my yard and didn’t feel like I had to defend the trailhead I let him.

We finally got to meet nose to butt face to face. I thought maybe he’d join us on our walk. I get to meet other dogs on my trails, but I haven’t gotten to go on a walk with another dog in a very long time.

But you know what Ghost Dog did? He disappeared. He just up and disappeared again.

My person says she knows what his real name is but I don’t care. Anyone who keeps disappearing like that, in my book will always be called Ghost Dog.

Where’s My Puddle?

Bongo Searching for the PuddleWhere is it? It’s been here for so long and now I can’t find it anywhere. Person, did you hide it in your computer like you did with those awards I got?

Well, you put all kinds of other things in your computer. I bet you could fit my puddle in there too. It had to go somewhere. It’s not here anymore.

So where did it go if it’s not here? Did the coyotes come sneaking in the night and drink it? Or did those birds who were hanging out here soak it up in their nesting material? It had to go somewhere.

No way! Puddles don’t disappear into the sky. I’ve never seen a big puddle floating off into the sky. That just doesn’t happen person.

Evaporation? What kind of a word is that?

Never mind.

Now I suppose you’re going to try to tell me that my puddle came falling out of the sky in the first place.

Sunshine Be Gone

Sunshine and SqueakerThere it goes! I kept it around longer than I really wanted to, but I was running short on squeaky toys so what could I do? It was dirty, stinky, and yucky – even more than I want to put up with – but I kept it. I made it last. I even stashed it for awhile so I didn’t have to think about it. Because it just didn’t have that zip anymore. That bright, shiny, sunshine cheer that I loved to squeeze until the squeaks came out.

But guess what sunshine? I don’t need you anymore. I’ve got more toys with squeakers now, and you know what? I’m going to reach right inside of you and yank your little squeaker right out. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and now I’m good and ready. You won’t even have time to think about the pain, ‘cause here I go.

Riiiiiiiiip! Out comes your stuffing.

Let’s see how clean I can make this surgery. I’ll even let you keep most of your stuffing. But I’m gonna get it. I’m gonna get what I want. The center of you – that thing that keeps you alive – makes you squeak when I squeeze.

Got it now. All mine! Oh, and I lied about keeping most of your stuffing inside.

Bongo Shredding the Sunshine

Okay person, do what you’ve gotta do.

On to my next squeaky toy.

Shivering

Bongo all WetNobody told me this would happen. Why am I so cold? Are you supposed to get cold after you go swimming? I’m shivering. And dripping.

Oh, let me shake this off. That was cool. Now I’m not dripping so much, but my people are.

How did you guys get wet? You didn’t go in the water. Are you shivering too?

Oh, no. What’s that funny sound? It sounds kind of like a woodpecker but it’s not coming from one of the trees. It sounds much closer than that. Very, very close. Is that sound coming from my teeth? They’re making a tune in rhythm to my shivering and I can’t stop them. What’s happening to me?

Whew! That’s better. Now that we’re back on the trail I’m not shivering any more. Person, why was I so cold? Why was my body shaking and my teeth making that funny noise?

What? Getting wet from swimming made me cold? But I can’t give up swimming. It’s too much fun. I know how we can fix it. Next time we come here, can you bring a blow dryer?

Where Are We Going?

Where are we Going?Today my people put my leash on and took me out to the 4Runner. They got it not too long ago and I’ve never been in it before. This is really strange.

So where were we going? The vet, or the dog hotel? I don’t see any suitcases, so I don’t think it’s the dog hotel. But my younger person never goes to the vet with us. I’m really confused.

It doesn’t take this long to get to the vet. Where are we going? We’ve been in the car a very long time.

It’s getting very bumpy now. Come on people. Where are we going?

What? Is this it? There’s a trail here. It’s not part of my usual trails. I didn’t know there were more trails. Wow! New smells and all! Where are we?

Okay people, you can look at the scenery. I’m checking out the smells. Sycamore Canyon, huh?

Come on, it’s downhill. Do I have to drag you, or are you going to start running?

Sycamore CanyonHey, there’s water here. This is fun!

Bongo in the Creek

No, I don’t want to get out. There’s more trail? I like the water.

Bongo Wanting to Stay in the Creek

Escape to Egypt

hills in the Judean desert

“…out of Egypt I called my son.” Hosea 11:1

Hey person, whose son is in Egypt? Are there animals in this story?

They worshipped what in Egypt? No way! They worshipped cats!? It’s a good thing that son was called out of Egypt. Who was that son anyway?

He was? How did he get there? I thought he was in…?

Okay person, I’ll let you tell the story.

My person says Jesus had his first big adventure when he was still very little. I like adventures. I’m listening person.

Okay, I’m quiet now.

My person says that after those Magi she talked about in the last Bible story gave Jesus his gifts, you know, that gold, frankincense, myrrh, and those chew toys, they were warned in a dream not to go back to that sneaky King Herod, so they went home another way.

After the Magi left, an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt because King Herod was going to look for Jesus to kill him. Sure enough when that sneaky evil King Herod realized he’d been outwitted by the Magi he got really mad and wanted to find and kill Jesus. But Jesus had already left for Egypt.

It wasn’t too long before sneaky evil King Herod died and an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream again, and told him they could go back to Israel. I hope they didn’t bring any of those cats back with them.

When they got back to Israel, without any cats, they found out that King Herod’s evil son Archelaus was ruling in Judea – the area they had been in before they went to Egypt – and they decided to go to a town called Nazareth in the district of Galilee instead. My person says that Nazareth is where Jesus grew up.

That was a pretty exciting adventure for a little kid – running away from an evil king, all the way from Israel to Egypt. I’m sure glad it ended okay. But person, I think there’s something wrong with my ears. I keep hearing this meowing sound.

Who’s Your Co-Pilot?

Dog is my co-pilotMy person and I were walking along as usual, heading for my trails and almost there when we saw it. Right out there plain and bold on a vehicle parked at the trailhead. Dog is my co-pilot. Wow! How cool is that?

I can see myself now, sitting in the passenger seat of my person’s car barking out orders – okay person, yeah, yeah – helping my person navigate, and maybe even getting to drive a little.

Or maybe, just maybe… Pilots fly airplanes don’t they? Maybe I could sit in the right seat next to the captain of an airplane and help fly it. That would be so cool. I could fly all over the world visiting all my blogging buddies and all the different branches of the Bongo Fan Club.

Okay person, maybe there aren’t a lot of branches of the Bongo Fan Club, but I could still visit my blogging buddies.

Well, my person was curious and when we got home she checked out the website that was on that sticker. The website is for a dog magazine called The Bark. My person had never heard of this magazine before.

But then, a couple days ago we heard about that magazine again.

Andrea, my blogging buddy from Iowa Dog Blog has an article published in the current issue of The Bark. You can see Andrea’s post about it here. I think this makes Andrea famous. And that means I have a famous friend. I might have to start an Andrea Fan Club.

Toss the Ball

Scratchy and the BallOutside I love to play Frisbee, but my Frisbee isn’t allowed inside the house. I don’t know why. My person says it might break something, but how much damage can a piece of plastic make?

At least my person lets me have some toys in the house. I have some soft balls and sometimes when I bring them to someone they’ll toss them so I can catch them. Usually I bring them to whoever is closest. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Well, the other day Scratchy was closest so I brought him my ball and dropped it at his feet. He just looked at it. He didn’t toss it for me. He didn’t even bat it back to me. He could have at least done that.

Come on, Scratchy. Pick that ball up in your little paws and throw it to me. I know you can do it.

Let Me at Him

Bongo Next to a RockMy person and I were walking along our trails today when all of a sudden around a bend comes another person with a big white dog. That other person pulled her dog to the side of the trail so us dogs wouldn’t meet. Kind of like my person usually does to me.

Well, that white dog and I must have had the same thing in mind. We both wanted to get to each other. I was pulling hard toward that dog, but my person held me too tight. That dog was pulling to get to me too, but his person held him even tighter.

My person made me go past that other dog and I wasn’t very happy about it. I really wanted to check him out. But no – people spoil all the fun sometimes.

So we continued on our walk and I forgot about that other dog. There were so many good smells and things to think about. As we headed back to the trailhead I began to think about dinner – until I saw him. I found that same white dog hanging around at the trailhead. Of course we both tried to get to each other again – yanking and pulling – and of course our people wouldn’t cooperate.

Then something really strange happened. Our people decided to let us get together. This is too easy. They let us sniff noses and —-other things.

And now I have a new friend named Bentley.
