Blanket Cat

Scratchy on top of the couchScratchy is the weirdest cat I know. Well, he’s the only cat I know but he’s still weird. You know what he does? He’s in love with all the nice, soft blankets around here. The kind that my person likes to use to keep warm when she’s sitting on the couch.

Scratchy must think those blankets are his mama. He grabs them in his teeth, presses his paws into them, and makes a sound somewhat resembling a purr. It’s the only time he makes anything like a purring sound.

Scratchy on the couch

What really gets me is when Scratchy does that on my person’s bed. When she starts moving around in the morning he finds a soft blanket that’s been exposed and starts his thing. He goes right up next to my person and does this, but if she touches him – even if she accidentally brushes against him – he gets mad and bites her.

Scratchy on the bed

Person, I don’t think you should tolerate this behavior from Scratchy. I’ll take care of him for you. Just give me the word.

Praying for Ghost Dog

Ghost DogThere’s no way! I don’t believe it. You really saw him that far away? You mean Ghost Dog not only disappears, but he can reappear in faraway places? Come on person, you’re telling me stories. Aren’t you?

I guess I’d better tell you a secret about my person. Sometimes she goes out with friends from her church to meet people and pray with them. I’m really not very happy about it because when she does that she leaves me home alone – well, Scratchy’s here but he doesn’t count. My person could stay home and hang out with me instead. If she really wants to pray for someone I’ll let her pray for me.

Anyway, my person went to a place a few miles from our house. She and her friends were walking around talking to people when she saw him. She saw Ghost Dog. At least she says she saw him – I’m still not sure if I believe her. There’s no way he could reappear that far away from here. I just sniffed noses with him at my trailhead a few days ago. Right before he disappeared the last time. But he always reappears somewhere around here.

You’re not going to believe what my person did next. I’m still not sure I can forgive her. She says that since she had gone out to pray, she prayed with all of Ghost Dog’s people friends. Do you believe it? She left me home alone and prayed for Ghost Dog.

I think my person should pray that Ghost Dog reappears near here. Then she won’t have to leave me home alone. She can pray for both of us at the same time.

Walk or Swim?

Jesus Walking on WaterWhat!? No animals and no food in this story? I don’t want to listen then. I’m outta here.

Water? Did you say water? A big lake? One that I can go swimming in? I like swimming. Okay, I’ll listen. But this better be good.

This one happened right after last week’s story huh? Right after Jesus fed all those people. I’m getting hungry now. You’re making me hungry thinking about those fish.

Okay, I’m listening.

My person says that after Jesus fed all those people he sent his disciples off in a boat to go to the other side of the lake they were at. Is this lake bigger than my swimming hole?

What? They’d gone three or three and a half miles and they were in the middle of the lake? I think that’s bigger person. Is that bigger?

Okay, I’m really listening this time.

My person said Jesus had gone up on a mountainside to be by himself and pray, and then in the early hours of the morning – somewhere between 3:00 and 6:00 AM – he decided to go meet up with the disciples.

Did the disciples leave Jesus a boat?

They didn’t? He’s going to swim all that way? I could swim with him. That would be fun. Do you think he’d throw some sticks for me to fetch?

No way! How’s he going to do that? Walk on the water!? And it was windy with lots of waves? I’ve got to see this.

My person says Jesus walked all that way on the water and when he got to the boat the disciples thought he was a ghost and they were scared. I’m not afraid of ghosts. After all, I’ve made friends with Ghost Dog.

Well, Jesus told the disciples not to be afraid – that it was him and not a ghost. Once the disciple Peter realized it was Jesus he wanted to go out walking on the water too, so Jesus told him to come on out.

I’d like to go out in that water too.

So Peter got out of the boat and I followed him. I just wanted to swim but Peter started walking on the water. Wow! I didn’t know Peter could do that.

I guess Peter didn’t know he could do that either, because when he saw how windy it was he got scared and started sinking. Peter cried out for Jesus to save him. Jesus reached out his hand and caught Peter and told him he didn’t have enough faith.

Jesus and Peter climbed into the boat, but they had to reach down and pull me in. I didn’t know it was so hard to get into a boat from the water. Okay person, I know I wasn’t really there, but it’s fun to pretend.

After Peter and Jesus got into the boat – and pulled me in – the wind died down. The disciples in the boat worshipped Jesus and said that truly he was the Son of God.

Now that there’s no wind, can we go back in the water again? Maybe James and John would like to come with us too. And how about Ghost Dog? I bet he’d like to go swimming.

It’s Still January

Pink Manzanita BlossomsI don’t get it person. What’s the big deal? Why are you taking pictures of those bushes?

So it’s only January, so what? What’s January?

Those bushes have blossoms on them? Oh, now I get it. Those bushes are really mixed up. They’re not supposed to have blossoms this time of year, are they?

Do you think those blossoms got really bored and decided to peak out to see what was happening?

Maybe we’re going to get late snow this year and those blossoms thought they’d sneak out while there wasn’t any. Or maybe they got really mad at one of my trail dog friends who was trying to water them and they thought they’d better come out and give him what for.

I think I’d better check that out. What kind of bushes did you say these were? Manzanita?

Bongo Sniffing Manzanita

Well, little Manzanita blossoms. I find no evidence of any of my dog buddies around here. You’re going to have to come up with a better reason for showing yourselves or go back where you came from.

Clean Out the Computer

Bongo SittingCome on person. Would you get them out of there? You’re not going to have any room left in your computer for my blog posts. Person, you’re starting to act like a hoarder. Come on, you can get them out. One at a time if you have to.

Person, why are you crying. I see tears coming out of your eyes. You didn’t lose them, did you? Those things you call files. Did you forget where you put the one they’re in? Maybe it’s under the bed.

You what? You’re crying because you’re touched? Person, I think you’re touched in the head. Come on. I know you know where they are.

Is that what it is? You do know where they are? You’re crying because so many of my blogging friends – who have really good blogs themselves, have given me awards?

Did you put my blog roll up yet to recognize all my great blogging friends? Well, get unbusy person. And where’s my Facebook page you promised me?

Okay, I can do that.

My person asked me if I would honor all of the great blogs who nominated me for these awards. I know I’m supposed to pass some of these forward, and I’m trying to get my person to unbusy herself and put up a blogroll for me since I have so many good blogging friends I can’t pick anymore.

So here goes.

ABC Award

A couple weeks ago I received the Awesome Blogger Award from Lilly the Cat. Lilly’s blog has some awesome cat cartoons drawn by Urooj Grundmann. Even if you’re a dog I think you’ll like these cat cartoons. They’re lots of fun.

One Lovely Blog Award

Three of my blogging friends have awarded me the One Lovely Blog Award. I’m not sure how lovely I am but I have a lot of fun on my blog.

I received this award from Sunshine at Simply Charming. She sometimes has some great poetry and photos on her blog, but my person says she especially likes Sunshine’s personal stories. Recently she wrote about her adopted daughter and my person had those tears in her eyes again.

I also received this award from Cee at Cee’s Life Photography. Cee has some wonderful photography on her site, much of it from Oregon where she lives. My person says she has an affinity for Oregon because her brother lives there and she grew up in the neighboring state of Washington. Cee has also written some very touching, very personal stories that have been incredible to read and can give hope to people who have been through or are going through something similar.

2 Brown Dawgs also nominated me for this award – but they are really 3 brown dawgs now with the addition of their super cute puppy Freighter who recently joined Thunder and Storm. These dogs are all Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. The blog has wonderful photographs of the dogs at home, training, and hunting. My person and I have learned a lot about what hunting dogs do and it has been quite an education. They really work hard.

Creative Capture Award

The Creative Capture Award came from Just Ramblin’ Pier. This was a real surprise as it was awarded for the photos I share on my blog and came from an awesome photographer. I love all the photos on this blog, but especially the ones of Stella the Newfoundland.

Versatile Blogger Award

My friend Vanilla Bean from the Philippines nominated me for the Versatile Blogger Award. Vanilla Bean is one of the cutest dogs I know, but not only do you get to see all the great photos, you hear about all of Vanilla Bean’s adventures. Right now Vanilla Bean is overseeing a whole lot of puppies that were born into the household.

HUG Award

My friend Sunshine at Simply Charming also nominated me for this last award. This award is especially meaningful to me my person because it means that maybe I am touching people’s lives in a meaningful way through my blog. And all I thought I was doing was having fun.

If you’d like to know more about what the HUG Award is you can find the info at A Hope for Today.

I hope everybody will click on at least one of these links and make a new blogging friend today.

Person, I don’t think anyone’s going to read down this far.

Following the Routine

Jelly Jar on the CarpetWhen my people leave the house I have a regular routine. First, I jump up on the couch so I can look out the window and watch my people leave.

Once I’m sure they’re gone I check to see if my person left the cat food on the counter. If it’s still there I reach to the back of the counter, pull Scratchy’s dish forward and have a feast treat. There’s usually not much left in there.

Next it’s the litter box.

Then I go check out my person’s bed. Nice and comfy. Especially up near the pillows. I’m still not sure how my person knows I’ve been on it, but she always does.

But here comes the biggest challenge. I can’t do this one every day. It all depends on what my person left in the sink. Sometimes she leaves things in there with flavored water inside. The trick is to get something out of the sink without spilling the water. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but I can only do it if I can find something that doesn’t weigh too much – like a small plastic bowl.

My proudest moment was when I got a jelly jar out of the sink and brought it to the next room without spilling anything. I left it that way until my people got home because I wanted to make sure they saw what I did. I mean, it’s not every dog that can do something like that.

Bongo drinking from the jar

I can drink the water now. My person's seen it.

Squirrel Come Down

Squirrel high on a wireThere you are you pesky squirrel. What are you doing up there? Come down here for a minute. I want to talk to you.

I don’t know how to talk squirrel, but what you’re saying to me doesn’t sound very nice. Come on down. Let’s have a decent conversation. Dog to squirrel. Stop chattering!

No, I’m not going up there. Who’s the boss of this yard anyway? After all, I am bigger than you. Am I hearing what I think I’m hearing? Are you laughing at me?

You get down here right now! I want to chase tell you something. How dare you go hanging around up there like you own the place? This is my yard! Who do you think you are?

Fine. Go hang out above the neighbor’s yard. I didn’t want to talk to you anyway.

Guess I told that squirrel who’s boss.

Strange Dog

Miniature Horse and PersonI saw the strangest dog when I was out on my trails today. It was a little bigger than me and it smelled like – I don’t know what it smelled like. I’ve never smelled anything like it before. I told my person to take a picture of it and she did, but it was kind of dark so the pictures didn’t turn out very well. I tried to get her to get closer but she wouldn’t. She just kept holding onto me. I wouldn’t have done anything – really.

I’m still trying to figure out what kind of dog that was. It had funny shaped feet and its person was letting it eat grass. I eat grass and weeds sometimes, but not the kind of stuff that dog was eating. And I usually don’t bother to eat stuff on the trails because I’m too busy checking out all the good smells.

Speaking of smells, I just can’t get over the way that new dog smelled. It didn’t smell like a dog at all. And it didn’t really want to hang out with me or anything. Most dogs want to check me out, the same way I want to check them out. Well, this made me want to check that dog out all the more.

Wait a minute. What are you trying to tell me person? That wasn’t a dog? Of course it was a dog. It sure wasn’t a cat and it was too big to be a javelina. What other kinds of animals are there on my trails?

Walking in the Rain

Rain CloudsI can’t believe my person did it. She took me for a walk in the rain. She could have just stayed at home in the nice warm house and hung out on the computer helping me write my blog – but no, she took me for a walk.

Well, I’m game pretty much anytime but this time it wasn’t quite fair. After all, my person has a jacket with a hood on it and her hair stayed dry. I ended up a little on the damp side by the time our walk was over.

It was a pretty cool walk though. I found lots and lots of slippery, slimy, squishy mud – it kind of reminded me of my slobber – about the same consistency (did I say that word – consistency?) Okay person, stop interjecting with words that I don’t even know what they mean.

Our walk out in the mud and the rain was a little quieter than usual. I could hear the slurping sound of the mud every time I put one of my feet in it but something was missing. We didn’t see one other person or dog on the trail today. Not one. Just a few robins and that was it. I guess all those other people were home on their computers practicing their writing and hoping I’ll let them help me with my blog someday.

Dog Treats

Yesterday I was interviewed on the Love of My Dogs blog. I put the link up late so I thought I’d add it again in case any of you missed it.

Where’s the Food?

English: Jesus feeding a crowd with 5 loaves o...

Can I tell them? Can I tell them now? Okay, I’ll tell them the story first. But I’m really excited.

What! No animals in this story? There’s something else I like in the story? It better be good because if there are no animals I’m not sure if I want to listen.

Food? There’s food in this story? Okay, I’m listening person. I like food. I like it a lot.

My person said that after Jesus had grown up he became pretty famous in the area where he lived. He’d performed so many miracles and healed so many people that he could hardly go anywhere without bunches of people following him.

What kind of miracles did Jesus do person? I want a miracle. Okay, I’ll listen if you promise to tell me about a miracle – and food.

My person said one day Jesus tried to go to a deserted place alone with his disciples but people heard about it and lots of them followed him. Jesus had compassion (what does that word mean?) for the people and began teaching them and healing their sick.

Well, it got to be late in the day and Jesus’ disciples started getting hungry, so they figured all the people there were getting hungry too. I bet even their dogs were getting hungry. So anyway, the disciples went to Jesus and told him to send the people away to the villages so they could get something to eat.

You know what Jesus told his disciples to do? He told them to feed all those people themselves.

There were about five thousand men plus all the women and children there – and their dogs. Those disciples just looked at Jesus like he was crazy and said it would take about eight months’ wages to feed all those people – and dogs.

One of the disciples said there was a boy there with five barley loaves and two fish but that wasn’t nearly enough food to go around for all the people.

It might not feed all those people but it would be good enough for me. Mmm fish.

Okay person, I’ll be quiet and listen.

Jesus told the disciples to bring him the food and then he told all the people to sit down. He took the five loaves and two fish, blessed and broke the bread and gave it to the disciples to give to the people. All those people ate and got full and when they were finished the disciples collected twelve baskets of leftover food.

Jesus is pretty awesome. I think that leftover food is just about the right amount for me.

Dog Treats

And if it’s not enough you can hop on over to Love of My Dogs where you can get great dog treat recipes and see my interview. This is so exciting!
