About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

Bookworm Free Zone

Bongo with pad, pen, and glasses - ready to writeI’ve heard of bookworms.

But I’ve never seen any around my house.

The books my person has are all worm free.

So I guess Gizmo – the cat that moved in here recently – figures it’s a free for all.

He’s got no competition from worms.

.

.

.

.

So he’s going to be the world’s first book cat.

Gizmo behind books

That cat is strange.

No Smoking

Bongo near a No Smoking signIt’s about time they got serious about this.

People hardly ever leave their litter on my trails, but they do leave cigarette butts.

And those butts stick around until they get covered up with dirt.

And they aren’t even the kind of butts that are good for sniffing.

But my person says the people who put up those signs weren’t even looking at the butts on my trails.

.

.

.

.

Because they don’t want this kind of smoking on my trails again.

Thunder Mountain behind smoke

A long time ago they posted fire restrictions because the fire hazard is so high right now.

And those restrictions include no smoking outside.

But for some reason wildfires don’t pay attention to signs.

And neither do some cigarette smokers.

So they had to put up great big signs.

Bongo sniffing near No Smoking sign

Hey person, I’ll be along in a minute.

I’m checking to see if there are any messages about people not seeing this sign.

Abnormal

Bongo on the floor - Gizmo on the bedCheck out Gizmo.

He looks like a normal cat here doesn’t he?

Sitting on the bed like cats do.

Well, don’t let him fool you.

Gizmo is strange.

.

Gizmo on his back on a futon

Most of the time he is not a normal cat.

I mean, how many cats do you know that sleep on their backs like this?

Yeah, I know. You’re probably saying that’s not so weird.

But wait.

Just when you think that Gizmo might be only a little abnormal…

Gizmo spread out on his back

He changes position.

There’s no doubt in my mind.

Oh, the life of a dog who has to live with cats.

Church Invite

Bongo next to a church invite on the trailI was walking along on my trails, minding my own business – when I spotted it.

An invite to church.

And I came to the only logical conclusion.

Since the invite is on my trails, and lots of dogs walk on my trails, someone obviously is inviting dogs to church.

So I told my person it was about time she took me to church.

And you know what she said?

She said this invite wasn’t to the church she goes to, and she wasn’t going to take me there.

This is bad.

This is really bad.

***

I had to find a way to get to church.

Bongo sniffing behind the church invite

I checked for messages.

Maybe one of my dog friends was offering rides to this church that invited us.

No such luck though.

And you know what my person did on Sunday morning?

She locked me in dog jail and drove off to her church.

It’s about time her church starting inviting dogs.

But I think they did and somehow I missed getting my invitation.

Or maybe my person hid it from me.

Because when she got home she told me there were five dogs at church.

My person is always pulling mischief on me like this.

And to make matters worse, she even saw a friend who was visiting from a long ways away that asked about me.

I know he would have liked to meet me in person in dog for real and give me the hug he told my person to give me for him.

All I can say is that next week I’m expecting six dogs at church.

And one of them had better be me.

Begging for Treats

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3ASaint_Pierre_et_saint_Jean_gu%C3%A9rissant_le_boiteux_-_Poussin_-_Metropolitan.jpgI’m still confused about all those different languages the people were speaking in the last story you told me.

Which people were speaking to the dogs?

The church grew after that day?

So I’m wondering – how many dogs joined the church?

Yes, I’m listening. I’m listening.

***

One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer – at three in the afternoon.

***

I thought you said a bunch of people joined the church.

Didn’t they have a great big church building by now?

Why were they going to the temple?

What do you mean, the church isn’t a building?

The church is people?

And dogs too. Right?

I am listening.

***

Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.

***

Did people give him treats?

That’s what I beg for.

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.

***

What good is money?

You can’t eat it.

***

Peter looked straight at him, as did John.

***

I hate it when people do that.

***

Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you.

***

Oh good. Peter must be giving him treats.

***

Peter said, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”

***

Oh, I get it.

Peter wants to take him for a walk.

Walks are good.

I’m listening, but I think I’ll follow them on their walk.

***

Taking him by the right hand, Peter helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.

***

That man sounds like he’s fun to go on a walk with.

I bet he’d play with me too.

***

When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

***

If that man isn’t begging anymore, will people still give him treats?

Pigs in Jail

Bongo looking at toy pigs in his dog jailA couple days ago I had a rumbly in my tummy and I wasn’t feeling very good.

The bed in my dog jail is comfy so I was spending a little more time in there than usual.

But I had to go get a drink of water and when I came back things weren’t the same as I left them.

.

.

.

.

My dog jail was no longer empty.

It had occupants.

Toy pigs in Bongo's dog jail

My dog jail had pigs inside!

How did my dog jail turn into a pig jail?

Where did these pigs come from anyway?

I still had that rumbly in my tummy and I didn’t feel up to solving this mystery, so I decided to get rid of it instead.

Pigs in kennel with open door

Pigs, get out!

***

I finally got the pigs out of my dog jail, but now what.

I couldn’t have pigs running all over the house.

toy pigs on the futon arm near the open door

So I corralled them over to the door.

pigs near the open door

And they just sat there looking at it.

Bongo getting ready to push the pigsI tried giving those pigs a shove.

And they still didn’t budge.

So I finally decided to try a different tactic.

Hey pigs, you see that door there?

Bongo leading the pigs out the door

Now follow me!

Take Your Dog to Work Day

Bongo in the wash on his trails

Come on person, we’ve got to get to work.

I don’t get it.

Today is a really special holiday, but it came on the wrong week.

Why didn’t it come last week?

That would have been much better.

You see, today is Take Your Dog to Work Day.

And you know where my person is working this week?

At home.

Do you believe it?

She’s working at home playing catch-up with all the things that she didn’t get done last week.

Because last week she was working at Vacation Bible School all week.

With all those kids and weird animals.

That’s where I wanted to go to work.

I would have even dressed up as a weird animal if I had to.

But I think those kids would have liked me no matter what.

I guess I’ll have to take my person to work with me instead.

My work is on my trails – where all my adventures lay waiting for me.

But while you’re waiting for me to come back and report on my next adventure, I thought I’d share a song with you.

It’s a special song for today.

Just click on this link: http://www.takeyourdog.com/audio/2012-TYDTW-Song.mp3 and take your dog to work.

He Said

Gizmo and Scratchy on the back of the couchThere’s something not fair around here.

Totally not fair.

Those cats I live with are always allowed on the furniture.

Anytime and anywhere.

But if I try to get on the furniture – the nice, comfy furniture – I get yelled at and told to get down.

Is that unfair, or what?

***

Sometimes I sneak onto the furniture when my person isn’t looking.

But the problem is that the furniture is so comfy that I don’t always wake up when my person comes near.

It’s really embarrassing when I get kicked off the furniture and the cats get to stay.

I feel like a second class citizen around here.

And we all know that dogs rule over cats.

We all know that, right?

I didn’t hear you.

Well, never mind.

Because I figured out a way to get past the problem.

I found myself an ally.

Bongo and his younger person on the futon

Person, don’t even try to kick me off.

He said I could.

Hanging Out

Bongo in the yardIt seems like every time I take my person for walks she gets her camera out.

She’s always making me wait while she takes pictures of flowers and stuff.

It’s frustrating.

I’ve got places to go and things to sniff – and all my person wants to do is stay in one spot and take pictures.

But when it comes to my yard, I’m not allowed to hang out there.

I get to go do my business and then I have to come right back in.

I don’t know what my person’s problem is.

Just because I jumped the fence once or twice.

I only do it when I’m bored.

***

But I finally figured it out.

You see, a thistle popped up in my yard and there aren’t any thistles on my trails.

So when my person was out pulling weeds I hid it from her.

And it worked.

Because that thistle bloomed and just like I knew she would…

My person headed out with her camera.

Thistle with purple blossoms

Top of thistle with purple blossoms

Thistle with purple blossoms and a bucket in the background

And I got to hang out in the yard.
