About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

Back Down the Mountain

Jesus heals boy with evil spiritI bet those disciples had a hard time coming down the mountain after Jesus turned all white in that story you told me last week.

But I guess they had to come down. There weren’t any fish on top of that mountain.

So did they get some fish when they got down from the mountain?

***

When they came down to the other disciples they saw a large crowd around them and teachers of the law arguing with them. When the people saw Jesus they ran to greet him and he asked them what they were arguing about.

***

I bet they were arguing about who had the most fish.

I am listening.

***

A man in the crowd answered Jesus. “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid.

***

I bet he’s just upset because he didn’t get any fish for dinner.

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

The man said he’d asked Jesus’ disciples to drive out the spirit from his son, but they couldn’t.

***

That man’s son must really be mad.

***

“O unbelieving generation,” Jesus said, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

They brought the boy to Jesus and when the evil spirit saw Jesus it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion.

***

That spirit must be really mad. I bet it wouldn’t even respond if you slapped it in the face with a big fish.

***

The boy’s father said to Jesus, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

“If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.”

Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

Jesus rebuked the spirit and it came out of the boy.

***

Woo woo! Give that boy some fish! And Jesus too.

Why don’t you think I’m listening?

***

The disciples came to Jesus and asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

Jesus replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

***

I think I need to work on my faith.

When my faith is strong enough I’ll be able to tell a school of fish to move from the ocean to my dinner plate.

Strange New Plants

Bongo sniffing a pink thing in the groundIt’s been hot here, and very dry until the last few days.

The wildflowers we had in the spring are gone. We’ll probably have a few more in the fall, but for now things are looking pretty bleak.

At least I thought they were bleak.

But there have been some really strange things showing up on my trails lately.

Like the pink flower in my trail’s parking lot.

I’ve never seen anything like it before.

It almost looks like a miniature firework that burst on the ground and never made it into the air.

I wonder what kind of flower this is – or if I’ll see any more of them.

I might have to get my person to search it out on the internet. Sometimes she finds the names of plants on my trails there.

This pink flower isn’t the only strange plant I’ve found on my trails lately.

Some plants must really like the heat of summer.

I haven’t figured out though if this other thing is a flower or a fruit.

I found it growing on a bush, right next to the trail.

Native American looking thing in a bush

I wonder what kind of bush the internet would say this is.

Puddle Invasion

Bongo near a small puddleA few days ago I was walking on my trails minding my own business when I saw something that surprised me.

My puddle had come back!

Well, half my puddle anyway. But my puddle has been missing for months and months.

I don’t know where it disappears to, but it does that a lot.

It just gets up and leaves. And then it shows up again when it feels like it.

***

So the next day I was really curious.

Would my puddle still be there, or not?

I found the strangest thing when I got to the puddle spot.

My puddle was still there…

tadpoles in the puddle

but it had been invaded.

Dozens of tiny tadpoles filled my puddle.

Swimming, wriggling, and darting all over the place.

I tried to stomp them out…

Bongo's foot in the water with the tadpoles

but there were far too many of them.

They filled every little bit of my puddle.

***

I went back the next day not knowing what to expect.

And you know what I found?

Bongo and a dried up puddle

No puddle, no tadpoles, nothing.

My puddle had fled and taken the tadpoles with it.

I thought I might find one or two tadpoles wriggling around in the dirt, but there were none.

***

Then today when I went back I found the puddle again. Even bigger than before.

Bongo in a puddle

But the tadpoles were nowhere in sight.

I have enough trouble trying to figure out where my puddle goes when it leaves…

But where in the world would a puddle take tadpoles?

Morning Treat

Bongo on the runFor the second day in a row I took my person for a walk in the morning – before that nasty thunder starts showing up.

And I’m finding there are extra benefits to going on walks this time of day.

Not only is it calmer and quieter – with no wind and no booming thunder – but this is the time that some of my friends are taking their people for walks.

.

.

Layla

Like my girlfriend Layla.

I hadn’t seen Layla in a long time and it was great fun romping around with her.

But since it had been so long she seemed to be a little shy at first.

Bongo giving Layla a nose kiss

I had to start out with a gentle nose kiss.

But soon Layla warmed up to me again.

And I got some really good loves.

Bongo getting loves from Layla

Woo woo!

Changing the Time

Bongo behind a bunch of bushesMy person finally figured it out. If we go on our trail walk in the morning there’s no thunder.

And it’s quiet – and peaceful.

This morning there was no wind to blow the smells away. I had a great time exploring and finding new smells.

Of course my person – like usual – kept dragging me away from all the good smells.

And then my person – like usual – wouldn’t go on a longer walk.

The same old routine.

Well, I guess it wasn’t really. We went at a different time of day.

Usually this time of year we go in the evening – when the sun is getting low.

But the thunder has been rumbling then too.

Hey person, I don’t need this thunder thing on anymore.

I’m brave now. See, there’s nothing here to scare me.

You need to get up early every morning for our walks.

That way you can get your exercise.

Wait! What do you mean, you want your exercise now?

I’ll just be a few more minutes here.

Bongo sniffing behind bushes

What do you think walks are for anyway?

Change of Plans

Bongo pulling against his leashI don’t know what my person is thinking. She keeps wanting to go for walks on my trails, and for the last few days I’ve been telling her it’s not safe there.

There’s thunder out there.

I guess my person doesn’t understand the danger of thunder.

Which is why she needs me to keep her safe.

So when she kept insisting we should go on my trails I really had to put my feet down.

.

Bongo pulling hard against his leash

Finally I got through to her.

I took her for a walk around the block instead.

I got to meet some dogs that I don’t usually see on my trails.

Well, they barked at me through their fence anyway.

I riled up Kaiser and Lica and they barked at me from inside their house. And while my person stopped to talk to their person their cat was sneaking peeks at me from the yard.

What? Wait a minute! I didn’t see that cat.

You mean I missed a perfectly good opportunity to chase a cat.

I’d better take my person on more walks around the block.

I had a great time walking around the block today, but I don’t think my person liked it so much.

Bongo in front of a Foreclosure sign

Because she put me up for foreclosure.

What’s foreclosure?

Is that related to golf?

Golf balls aren’t much fun to play with.

Tennis balls are better.

And they have love in tennis.

Could you change that sign, person?

Tennis balls and loves. Woo woo! What a combination!

Let’s go around the block again – as soon as that new sign goes up.

Hairless Toby

Bongo on the far side of TobyWe have a new dog in the neighborhood so I went to check him out when I was out on my walk today.

Hmmm. He smells really familiar.

But I’ve never seen a dog before that looks like him.

.

.

.

.

Bongo and Toby facing away

Some kind of hairless dog. I thought hairless dogs were little. This one seems so big.

Well, nice to meet you, hairless dog.

Bongo walking away from Toby

I’ll just be on my way now.

Person, what do you mean, we’re done with our walk?

Can’t we go around the block some more?

I know our house is right here.

Hey, wait a minute. That strange hairless dog went over to my neighbor Toby’s house.

I wonder if Toby got a new brother.

I don’t believe it!

Toby didn’t get a new brother.

That is Toby!

Toby with a summer shave

I hope Toby doesn’t get mad at me that I blogged about him without realizing it.

That must be really embarrassing to have no hair.

Toby, I won’t tell if you don’t.

Up the Mountain

The upper part of The Transfiguration (1520) b...

The upper part of The Transfiguration (1520) by Raphael, depicting Christ miraculously discoursing with Moses and Elijah. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

What? Jesus is making his disciples climb a mountain?

I hope it wasn’t a hot day. I don’t like climbing mountains on hot days.

Oh. He only took three of his disciples? Were the other ones out of shape? I bet that mountain was too high and steep for them and they couldn’t make it.

So who did Jesus take?

I am listening to the story. I’m just trying to help you along.

***

Jesus took Peter, James, and John up the mountain with him.

And when they were alone He was transfigured before them.

***

Did He become all crippled and ugly looking?

Well, isn’t disfigured the same as transfigured?

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

Jesus face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as light.

And then Moses and Elijah appeared and they were talking with Jesus.

***

Hey, I thought this was a story about Jesus. How did Moses and Elijah get into it?

I am listening.

***

Peter, James, and John were frightened and didn’t know what to do so Peter said, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

***

Do you think they could put up a shelter for me too? I bet it’s hot up there on that mountain.

***

While Peter was still speaking a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

***

Now I’m really in trouble. It was bad enough when you were telling me to listen, but now God is.

***

When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.

***

Were they having trouble listening too?

***

Jesus came and touched the disciples. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”

The disciples looked around and saw no one except Jesus.

***

Is this like the Twilight Zone or something?

***

As Jesus and the disciples were coming back down the mountain Jesus told them not to tell anyone what they’d seen until Jesus had been raised from the dead.

The disciples weren’t sure what Jesus meant, but they didn’t tell anyone for a long time.

***

This was really a strange story. Jesus didn’t heal anybody, and He didn’t help anyone catch a bunch of fish.

Hey, maybe Moses and Elijah went to get a bunch of fish and they’ll be back with dinner.

New Friends

Bongo on the trailMy person came to pick my up at the dog hotel yesterday. She made me stay there a whole week while she went off to San Diego and had fun without me.

She even made friends with strange animals.

.

.

.

.

Oryx

I can’t believe my person went far away to hang out with other animals. Why would she be interested in other animals when she’s got me?

This is getting really serious.

Lemur near someone's foot

This animal looks way too friendly.

Then she went to the beach and hung out with the birds.

sea gull on the beach

I want to go to the beach.

I want to chase those birds.

This is totally not fair.

But now I’m getting really worried.

Mater from Cars

My person is hanging out with a truck.

Well, that’s okay. My person can just go hang out with all her new friends.

I’m not sure I want to leave the dog hotel.

Because I’ve got a new friend too.

Bongo with a friend at the kennel

Don’t tell my person. This can be our little secret.

But next time my person goes and makes new friends to hang out with –

I’ll be having great fun – at the dog hotel.

My Chance to Post

Scratchy on the back of the couchThis is Scratchy here.

Bongo’s been gone in the dog hotel for a few days now.

He must be running out of adventures because I didn’t find a post on his blog today.

So now’s my chance. I’m getting on the computer and filling in for him.

Don’t tell him I did this. He always gets really mad at me when I try to take over his blog.

But I don’t have anything better to do anyway.

I’ve been hanging out here all by myself all week.

It’s been really nice not having Bongo to harass me, but it’s kind of lonely too.

I couldn’t even steal Bongo’s food because there wasn’t any.

Scratchy eating Bongo's food

It’s really hard to get into mischief when nobody else is around.

And it’s especially hard to make sure Bongo gets all the blame for my mischief when he isn’t even here.

I do get a visit sometimes from my friends from across the street, but they don’t care if I’m up to mischief.

Oh wait. I think I hear something.

Is that Bongo?

Is he coming home already.

I’d better get off his blog quick.

Please don’t tell him I did this.

Scratchy

Scratchy

Oh, it’s you Bongo.

Wake me up when you’ve got something to say.
