The No Sign

Bongo ignoring a No Trespassing signWhen I take my person through the dry wash on my trails we come to a place that has signs on the trees. That first word on the sign is “No” and I know what that means. I have no idea what the second word means. It’s one of those big words that people use that doesn’t make sense to me.

But I already know that I don’t like that word No. I hear that word too much at home when I’d rather hear Yes. Just once I’d like to hear, “Yes, you can eat the cat food that Scratchy left,” or “Yes, it’s okay to hang out on the couch,” but no, I never hear those things.

Since I don’t like the first word on that sign, the other word is probably bad too. So I’m ignoring it.

.

.

Bongo in front of No Trespassing sign

But my person says I’m not allowed to go past those signs. She says the other side of those trees is no longer my trails and it’s someone’s private property.

I don’t get it. It looks like my trails to me. There’s a house way up on a hill, but there’s nothing down here.

Don’t those people realize that these are my trails and they’re lucky that I don’t bring all my dog friends and have a party here?

But my person seems to think I should honor those signs. She, of all people should realize that these are my trails.

Since I can’t convince my person and she won’t let me go past those signs, I’ll just handle it another way.

Name that Trail

Broken RockOne of my trails that I take my person on a lot doesn’t have a name. That’s because it’s not an official trail.

As far as I’m concerned it’s official, but it’s kind of nice because it’s almost private.

But I’ve been thinking, that trail really needs a name.

My person must have been thinking the same thing because today we found a broken rock on the trail and she thought Broken Rock Trail would be a good name.

She even tried to get me to pose by the rock to make it official.

Bongo looking away from the broken rock

I’ve got to think of another name quick. Broken Rock sounds so stupid. I mean, somebody accidentally stepped on that rock and broke it and now it’s going to be the name of my trail?

I don’t think so.

I thought and thought – as much as a dog brain can think – and finally I came up with it.

Here it is! The official name for my trail.

Bongo sniffing a bush near the broken rock

Good Sniffs Trail it is.

I bet all the dogs will want to visit it now.

Flower Power

Indian Paintbrush hiding under blooming manzanita bushIt’s that time of year again. When my person is the slowest hiker in the world because all she seems to do is take out her camera.

And when I think she’s finished and we can start moving, she takes it out again.

There are some flowers that bloom around here called Indian Paintbrush. They’re pretty hard to miss when you walk by.

I’ve been lucky though. None of them grow on the trails we usually walk on, and I can usually distract my person when we walk by the ones near our trail so she doesn’t notice them.

But you know what those Indian Paintbrushes did?

They smuggled a couple of them right onto my trail and hid them under a Manzanita bush. But even hidden they’re hard to miss because of their bright color.

And my person noticed them.

And then she noticed that those other ones were in bloom. Those ones I told you about that she usually doesn’t notice.

So she had to go off of our trail and get her camera out. And of course she dragged me with her.

But I discovered something about those flowers.

The bushes around those flowers – the ones they tried to hide those paintbrushes under – have some really good smells in them.

I hope my person stays here and takes pictures for a long time.

Trail Trip Without Me

Saguaro cactusDo you know what my people did? You won’t believe it. I can’t believe it because what they did is really terrible.

While I was stuck at the dog hotel you know what they did? They went out looking for new trails.

Without me.

How could they do that?

I mean, I love trails. And I love adventure. And how can you find more adventure than on a new trail?

And they didn’t take me.

And look at all the things they found.

.

Saguaro cactus dwarfing Bongo's younger person

I’ve never seen cactus like this on my trails. It’s towering over my younger person. Look how small he looks. It makes me feel bigger just to look at that picture.

I can be Big Dog now. My younger person doesn’t look so big after all.

Hey wait a minute. Now wait just a minute.

Saguaro Lake

You found a lake on that new trail and you didn’t take me swimming?

This is totally not fair at all. I’m going on strike.

No walks for my people until they take me to that lake.

What, person? There is what on that new trail you found?

Jumping Cholla cactus

Attack cactus?

If you get too close that cactus jumps off and sticks to you?

That sounds like a secret weapon to me. If some bad guy comes I could convince him I want to take his picture next to that cactus. And then whap, whap! That cactus jumps off and attacks him. And I’ve got it all on film.

I sure wouldn’t want to kiss him after that.

What do you mean, that’s not very nice. I’d only do it to a bad guy.

You think I would get tangled up in that cactus?

I would never go near that attack cactus. I’m the perfectly behaved dog. I always do what you say.

Fine then. I wouldn’t want to go on that new trail anyway. Giant cactus and attack cactus and a lake that’s so far down the hill that I’d have to take a flying leap into it.

I’m all worn out from the dog hotel anyway. I had fun that you don’t know anything about.

Don’t even think about trying to take me on that new trail. I’ll be busy. Taking a nap.

On the Trail Again

Bongo with his nose deep in bushesFinally! Today I was able to get my leash and put it into my person’s hand and take her for a walk. It’s been a week – well, except for one day that I took my younger person. I guess my person is getting better at chasing that bug away now so she can go with me.

I had so much to catch up with out on my trails. I had to find out which of my buddies had been by and which of them had left me messages. I bet some of them were worried when I didn’t answer for so long. Well, I sent them all messages so they know I’m back.

I was so busy sniffing that I almost didn’t notice when my person got her camera out. It’s that flower season time of year.

Wait a minute. What are these doing blooming? I thought I’d managed to get away with no Manzanita blossoms this year.

Manzanita bush in bloom

Last year the Manzanita blossomed in January. What gives?

I guess there’s only a few bushes with blossoms. My person can’t take too many pictures of them, can she?

***

We were almost back home and we’d even gone past all the Manzanita bushes – there are a lot of them on my trails – when I saw it.

I saw the strangest forest creature I’ve ever seen on my trails. I don’t know where it came from or what it was doing there.

I’m not sure what it is, but I think it’s some kind of forest fairy.

Washed Out

Bongo in the washI really love going into the wash on my trails. It has the best smells and it’s full of quail to chase. Well, I wish I could chase them. They’re always running away through the bushes long before I ever get near them.

The wash isn’t really a trail, but it does have trails leading down into it. One of those trails, my favorite, my person usually won’t let me use. Sometimes when the ground is moist and soft she lets me go down it but otherwise she says it’s got too many loose rocks for how steep it is. Just because I jumped all over her the one time she did slip. I thought she just got on the ground so we could wrestle. How was I to know?

But there’s another trail into the wash a little ways past that one. It’s not so steep so my person lets me use that one most of the time. Sometimes when it’s been raining a lot she doesn’t want to go into the wash at all. And that’s the most fun time, too. I love splashing in all those puddles. My person just doesn’t know how to have fun.

Today I found a new trail into the wash. And it takes me into the wash even earlier than those other trails.

And guess what. That upper part of the wash has some special surprises in it. Things that must get washed out before they get further down the wash.

Today I found something really special.

Trail Barricade

Bongo with his leash across the trailToday was a beautiful day out on my trails. The weather was warm, the birds sang,

.

and airplanes flew about overhead.

Airplane

And lots of people passed us on the trail.

And my person kept pulling me aside so I couldn’t get any loves from them.

So I figured out a fix to that situation – but it only works when my person doesn’t see the other person first. Like when we’re going around a bend in the trail.

I’ve got to make sure I’m on the opposite side of the trail from my person. And I’ve got it.

Immediate trail barricade.

And I’m not moving until I get some loves.

One person thought I was totally innocent – that I had no idea I was blocking my trail. Little did she know that she was in my trap.

But my person is such a party poop. She yanked me over to her side of the trail and the trapped person escaped without even giving me a single love.

Somehow I’ve got to figure out how to get my person on my side.

Wait, I mean on the other side.

Now I’m confused.

Just remember to give me loves before I wrap you up in my leash.

Appreciating the Weather

Bongo sniffing something on the trailToday was one of those T-shirt kind of days that we sometimes get here in January. My person said snow was on the way so we needed to take advantage of the weather while it’s here. So off we headed on my trails.

Hey person, this isn’t our usual way to go. Where am I taking you?

Bongo in a small patch of snow

Did you say snow was on its way? There’s some snow already hanging out here.

When I finished checking out the snow that seemed to like this warm weather, we headed on up the trail.

Where am I taking you person? This trail’s really steep.

Are you coming, person? You seem to be taking your time.

Bongo looking worn out

You can slow down now, person. I need a rest.

Finally, we made it to the top.

Can you see our house down there?

Hey, this is pretty cool. A what kind of view is it? Panoramic view? I don’t see any pans from here? Just an old coffee pot.

Fans on my Trails

Bongo sniffing in a snow patchToday was on the nippy side with a little bit of a breeze. It felt kind of like a fan blowing on me. A chilly fan. At least it wasn’t cold and windy with snow blowing in my face like it was a few days ago.

A few patches of snow still hung out around my trails and they had some very unusual scents in them. I had to stick my nose into all the indents in the snow. It was fun – until my person told me I’d smelled enough and made me leave.

.

Bongo stepping lightly in the puddle

I checked out my puddle too. It always seems to come around when there’s snow on the ground. My puddle felt very cold and it smelled a lot like those snow patches. I wished I’d had a blanket with me for my puddle. It could have used some warming up.

But here’s the best part. As we were walking along my trails we met two people. That’s not so unusual – we meet people on my trails all the time – but my person seemed to know these people. I’m still trying to figure out how my person knows all these people that I’ve never met, but she does.

But here’s the even stranger part. One of those people that I’ve never met before knew who I was, and she even knew my name.

And she gave me loves…

Bongo giving his new friend kisses

lots of loves.

She’s one of my fans who reads my blog.

I kind of like this meeting my fans thing – so I’d like the rest of my fans out there to please go for walks on my trails. And make sure you’re out there the same time I am. You can check with my secretary person for my schedule.

No person, I’m not letting this fan thing go to my head.

What do you mean I still have to pick up my own toys and make my dog bed?

The New Raccoon

Bongo meeting a boy with a raccoon hatYesterday was a blustery, snowy kind of day and I didn’t want to be outside at all. But today was a different kind of day. The sun came out and the air was crisp and cool. The perfect day for a walk.

It’s a good thing today was a good walking day because I found an animal that I’ve never seen on my trails before. Today I made friends with a raccoon.

I didn’t know what to expect from a raccoon because I’ve never met one before.

.

At first he was kind of shy.

He even tried to run away from me.

Bongo, the boy, and his friends

But the raccoon’s friends tried to help. He didn’t seem to be afraid of them at all, even though they weren’t raccoons.

Finally we became friends. That little raccoon put his fear aside and patted my head.

He even taught me how to play a game.

I had so much fun with my new friend today. I hope he’s just the first of a whole family of raccoons that I get to meet on my trails.
