What Are They Doing Here?

Parked vehicle with kayaks on topI’ve been finding some strange things in the parking lot of my trails lately.

Take this vehicle for instance.

What in the world would anyone be bringing kayaks to my trails for?

There’s no water anywhere on my trails.

Well, sometimes my puddle is there but it’s been missing for a long time.

And sometimes the wash gets filled if it’s been raining a lot.

But even then, I don’t think I’d want to take a kayak down it.

Those kayaks would scrape bottom and probably get big holes in them – and then they’d sink.

Well no, I guess they wouldn’t sink.

The water isn’t deep enough.

.

I decided to give up on why those kayaks would be anywhere near my trails when I ran across another mystery.

Vehicles with words about windows

This is even worse than kayaks.

There’s not a single window on my trails.

Well, I did see a piece of broken glass – but it didn’t need washing.

I think these two vehicles are in cohorts with each other.

But that might depend on if a man or a woman is driving that car.

I might have to wait to find out who shows up because I’m not sure if the driver is a Window Man or a Wind Woman.

If it’s a Wind Woman I might never find out.

She may have blown away.

***

While I was busy contemplating what had happened to the Wind Woman I saw something else.

And I’ve got a serious problem with the driver of this car.

MYEARTH license plate

I guess you can claim most of the earth for yourself…

But these trails are mine!

Got it?

Mine!

Big, Big Dogs

Horse shoe prints in the dustWhat a day I had!

First, I saw these strange prints on my trails.

They don’t look like people prints and they’re certainly not from any animal I know.

I saw prints like these once, a long time ago.

And I never did figure out what they were.

I started to head home to get my Detective Dog hat and figure out this mystery when I came across another clue.

.

Bongo checking out horse droppings

Hmmm. This stuff tastes kind of good. I wonder where it came from.

My person wouldn’t let me finish the stuff off – and I guess it would have destroyed all the evidence anyway – so I continued on my way to get my hat.

When I saw them.

The biggest dogs I have ever seen in my life!

Two horses coming down the trail

And they were coming right at me!

They passed right by me on my trails.

Two horses on the trail with Thunder Mountain in the background

And there were people riding on their backs.

My person better never try to ride on my back.

Oh oh. Here come some more of those dogs.

Two more horses coming down the trail

Hey, where are those big dogs going?

Do you believe it? They just walked by me.

Horses walking away

And they didn’t even stop to say “Hi.”

Bongo trying to chase after the horses

Hey big dogs, come back here!

I’m not through with you yet.

***

This is terrible!

Not only did those big dogs just walk away…

Bongo's leg with cactus stickers in it

They made a cactus try to hold me in place so I couldn’t follow them.

I’ll take care of those dogs alright.

They won’t get away with ignoring me on my own trails.

Helicopter in the air

I’m sending the helicopter squad out to pick them up.

No Snow

Bongo on virgin snowYou see this picture here?

It didn’t happen today, or this week, or even this month.

This snow happened a very long time ago.

I haven’t had any snow to play in at all this winter.

And some of my friends have way more snow than they want.

You’d think it could get evened out a little better.

So I’m trying to figure out how I can get some of those clouds down here to play in.

.

They look like they might be as much fun as snow.

Wind swept clouds over red rocks

It looks like God’s paintbrush almost ran out of paint when He was brushing those clouds across the sky.

Clouds over Thunder Mountain

Oh wait, I think I’ve figured out how to get those clouds down here.

Clouds

Almost anyway.

Hey, what’s this?

Clouds with sun dog

Isn’t that little colored spot in the sky called a sun dog?

Now that’s my kind of cloud.

Early Spring

Purple flowerI think I’m in trouble now.

This is January, right?

Isn’t January the middle of winter?

Well, it kind of doesn’t seem like that here – but the flowers should pay attention.

They’re not supposed to show up for months.

But my person found one today.

The first flower of spring – but it’s still winter.

Which means it’s already started.

.

Those drudgingly long waits while my person gets her camera out and takes picture after picture of flowers.

And it looks like it’s going to be a long season this year.

I don’t know why she does it.

I mean, aren’t these the same kinds of flowers that she took pictures of last year.

And the year before.

I just don’t get people sometimes.

They don’t make any sense.

Okay, I’m done with my rant until the next time my person gets her camera out.

Manzanita bush in bloom

Wait! What?

More flowers already?

I forgot about those Manzanita bushes.

They always start blooming really early.

And then when they stop blooming they have berries.

And my person takes pictures of those.

I think I’d better do something about this.

Maybe I should eat them like I did to those curly weeds the other day.

Bongo behind manzanita bushes

Oh. Ummm.

This is going to be tricky.

There are a lot of Manzanita bushes on my trails.

Does anybody want to come help?

Slacking on the Job

Bongo on the trail with his leash stretched behind himYou see what’s attached to me?

No, no! Not the leash.

Well, I guess you can’t see what’s attached to my leash, but you can probably figure it out.

My person is on the other end of it.

It’s kind of a burden sometimes but it’s one of my jobs.

I’ve got to take her out so she can get her exercise.

I thought all dogs had this on their job description.

.

But I found one today who doesn’t seem to think so.

Brown dog hiding in the bushes

Who is that hiding in the bushes?

I wonder if she ditched her person by going places her person couldn’t follow.

Brown Dog

Here she comes.

Hey brown dog, if you’d stay on the trail like me you could be doing your dogly duty and giving your person exercise.

Brown Dog on the trail

Say what?

Don’t tell me what to do.

It’s a little late to be hitting the trail now.

Where is your person anyway?

Brown dog walking away

Fine. Be that way.

What is it with these personless brown dogs anyway?

It seems to be turning into an epidemic around here.

Strange Sounds

Bongo looking at SugarloafSometimes when I’m out on my trails I hear strange sounds coming from the top of Sugarloaf.

In case you haven’t figured it out, Sugarloaf is that round, red, hill thing over there.

So anyway, back to those strange sounds.

Sometimes I hear people yelling from up there.

Sometimes someone is playing a flute.

I’ve even heard drums beating up there.

But today I heard one of the strangest sounds of all.

I heard chanting.

.

And not just any chanting.

Three people were chanting in unison.

They must have practiced a long time because they all were in the same place at the same time with their chant.

I heard that sound, but I had to look all over the place before I finally found where it was coming from.

So I had my person take a picture of those chanters so you could see them too.

But I think you might have to look as hard as I did in order to find them.

People chanting in Sugarloaf

Happy chanting – I mean looking.

Danger Warning

Bongo near a prickly pear cactusThey’re all over my trails.

Sometimes people we pass ask my person how she keeps me away from them.

But for the first time today someone warned us about them.

A boy who had just discovered them.

I don’t think he was attacked, but he saw the danger.

Those things have attitude.

And some of them hang out right next to my trails.

.

So close that you have to be careful not to brush against them.

But I think that boy might have been overly concerned.

Let me see.

Bongo sniffing a prickly pear cactus

Nope, he’s right.

Bongo backing off of the prickly pear

Away, you prickly pear! Away!

Don’t get so close to my trails.

Where is Everybody?

Bongo and prickly pear cactus in the sunThere are hardly any people – or dogs – on my trails compared to what there were a few weeks ago.

I don’t get it.

The weather hasn’t changed.

If anything it’s gotten warmer – and sunnier.

My person says they all left town after the holidays to go back home.

Back to their houses in the snow.

I wish they’d send some snow over here.

.

That would be perfect – warm sunny days with snow to play in.

But there’s no snow.

There’s no people.

And there’s no dogs.

Bongo looking like he doesn't know what to do

How am I supposed to have any adventures?

Bongo curled up in his kennel

Guess I’ll go take a nap.

Tag with chain hanging on a trail cairnWhat’s this?

There’s some kind of label on my trail cairn.

It’s never been here before.

I wonder what it’s supposed to do.

Maybe each trail cairn is going to get its own special tag.

Then when someone gives directions on my trails they don’t have to say, “Follow the cairns to the end of the trail.”

They could say, “Go past the red tagged cairn and turn left at the blue tagged cairn.”

That would make it so much easier to give directions.

Unless you forgot which tags were on which cairns.

.

If you told someone the wrong thing they might get really lost. They might end up at the trail that ends in a big hole instead of at the trail where they could climb a mountain like they really wanted to do.

Whoever put that tag on there needs to come up with something better.

But how am I going to tell them? I don’t even know who put that tag there.

Maybe if I sniff around I can find some clues.

Bongo sniffing trail cairn

I don’t know.

There’s been so many messages left here (including some of my old ones) that I don’t know if I’ll ever sort it all out.

Wait. What’s this?

This tag has another side.

Necklace on tag on cairn

The other side is a necklace.

And it says, “PASS IT ON!”

I’ve got it now.

This tag wasn’t left here to label the cairn – this necklace was left here for me.

So I could pass it on to the next one of my girlfriends that I see.

I wonder who my lucky girlfriend will be.

New Trail

Two Rock Piles marking a trailAs I walked along on my trails I saw something unusual.

New trail markers – one on each side of a trail.

Where there had been no trail the day before.

Strange. I didn’t know trails could just pop up like that.

Well, if there’s a new trail I guess I’d better explore it.

.

.

Bongo walking past the markers

So I went between the markers and started to wander down the trail.

It was such a new trail that I thought it was going to fizzle out.

It almost did – but it didn’t.

And you know where that trail took me.

Right to that place where I found those aliens the other day.

The ones that had turned to stone. I posted about it here.

But something had happened. The aliens were gone.

This is really serious because I thought I was safe.

I thought that since those aliens had turned to stone they were stuck and couldn’t go anywhere.

Now I don’t know where they are. They could pop out at any minute and I have no idea if they are friendly aliens or not.

Aliens could be lurking anywhere on my trails – ready to jump out and get me.

I don’t know what to do, but I might need your help.

Those aliens look like piles of stones, so if you see anything suspicious could you let me know?

I don’t want to be caught unawares.
