About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

It’s in the Bag

It’s a good thing my person can’t see me right now. I’d really get in trouble.

Sometimes when my person goes into the garage I push my way past the screen door before it closes all the way. That’s where my food is kept and there are always little nuggets on the floor that were spilled. I figure I’m doing my people a favor by keeping the area clean.

If it hasn’t been very long since the last time I made my way out into the garage there usually aren’t many nuggets lying around. And I don’t feel I’ve gotten enough payment for all of my hard efforts. So I check to see what’s in the bag. After all, it is my bag of food. There shouldn’t be any problem if I just help myself.

Usually my person sees me doing it, grabs me by the collar, and makes me go back in the house.

Today I got lucky though. My food bag is almost empty so I was able to get my head all the way inside it. My person’s never going to see me now. I can have a feast. I’ll go back in the house when my bag’s empty.

What!? Wait a minute! Person, how did you know I was in here? No fair. I’m not ready to go back in the house. I’m not finished yet.

By the way person, you need to go get me another bag of food really soon.

What’s the Real Story?

Bees and PenstemonMy person tried to tell me yesterday that we couldn’t go in my wash because of some invisible things. I didn’t believe her. I think she was just making excuses for not going in my wash.

But I just remembered something. The day before when we were in the wash, we walked past my red flowers like we usually do. These flowers like to hang out in my wash. I’ve never seen them leave it. There are a few that creep up to the edge of the wash, but they don’t get out.

Normally these flowers are very quiet. They don’t even move much, unless there’s a breeze. But this last time we walked by they were very noisy. They were making a buzzing sound.

And there was movement all through those flowers. It almost looked like the flowers were jumping off their stems so they could visit each other, but none of the visitor flowers were red like the others.

When I looked closer I realized that all of those visitors were bees. The flowers were full of bees. Where did they all come from? They’d never been around before.

But before Detective Dog shows his hat on the question of bees, I’m still working on those invisible things my person told me about yesterday.

Now I think she made up that “no see ‘em” story because she didn’t want to bother the bees. I’m not buying it. She’s going to have to come up with a better story.

No Wash

Bongo heading to the washDo you see anything? Besides me, that is.

Neither do I.

But my person says there’s something there.

That picture is me, heading down the trail to my wash. My person wouldn’t let me go there. She made me go on my regular trails today.

Why? She made up some lame excuse about something you can’t see. Invisible things that fly around and irritate you. Little bad spirits or something.

She says they always show up around this time of year and they just showed up today. I don’t even notice them. I think my person made them up. She says they’re all over my trails but they’re worse in my wash.

She could have come up with a better story if she didn’t want to go in my wash. Like a giant flood on its way that might overtake us, or a mountain lion lurking behind a tree waiting to jump out at us. Or a bunch of coyotes waiting to lure me into their pack. But no, she made up a sad story about invisible things. She even has a name for them. She calls them “no see ‘ems.”

Well, the next time I don’t see a cat, or I don’t see a rabbit, or even a quail, I’m chasing after it anyway. I can play this “no see ‘em” game too.

One Potato, Two Potato

Bongo sniffing a sack of potatoesI always mess up my mischief posts and get them on the wrong days, so this time I’m going to make sure I get my mischief on Monday.

It’s really not my fault though. It’s all my person’s fault. She knows I can’t help myself when she leaves food within my reach. And most places in the kitchen are in my reach.

Everybody left the house except me and Scratchy. And there was a big sack of potatoes on the table. I knew those potatoes didn’t belong there. No food should be left on the table when nobody’s eating. So I thought I’d do my people a favor and get those potatoes off the table.

While those potatoes were off the table I thought maybe I should check them out and see if they were alright. I didn’t take any out of the bag. Really. You don’t see anything here, do you?

Bongo covering up a potato

I didn’t think I was going to get in trouble for moving those potatoes. After all, I was doing my people a favor. Taking them off a place where they weren’t supposed to be.

When my person got home she yelled at me.

But you know what? It turns out I didn’t do it at all. Scratchy knocked those potatoes off the table. I can’t believe he’d do such a thing. Somebody needs to teach that cat a lesson.

Meat or Vegetables?

Daniel refusing the King's Food

Daniel refusing the King’s Food (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

My person told me about someone in the Bible that I haven’t heard of before, but what he did doesn’t make sense to me. I think he’s crazy.

Person, I wouldn’t have done what Daniel did. It makes it hard to tell the story.

Okay, I’ll tell it the way you said it happened.

Daniel lived in Jerusalem at a time when Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon came and besieged it. Hey person, what does besieged mean? I be seeing it? Did King Nebuchadnezzar come to see Jerusalem?

Okay, I’ll just tell the story.

King Nebuchadnezzar ordered the chief of his court officials to bring some Israelites from the royal family and the nobility back to Babylon with him. He was supposed to pick young men who were smart and handsome. Some of those he picked were Daniel and three of his friends.

They had to what? My person says they had to walk over 500 miles to get to Babylon. I like walks but I don’t think I’d want to walk that far. Why didn’t they just get in a car, person?

Okay, I’ll tell the story. This is the part I don’t get. The king offered Daniel and his friends all kinds of good stuff to eat. Lots of meat and stuff. Mmmm. Yummy!

And you know what Daniel did? He turned it down. Now that just doesn’t make sense to me.

My person says Daniel probably didn’t want the king’s food because some of it had been offered to idols, and it hadn’t been prepared the way God told the Israelites to prepare their food.

Daniel asked the chief official if he and his friends could have permission not to eat that food, but the chief official said he was afraid of the king, and the king had assigned the food to them. So Daniel made a deal with the chief official. He asked for him and his friends to be given nothing but vegetables and water for ten days, and then to compare their appearance with that of the young men who ate the royal food.

And this is the really sad part. At the end of ten days Daniel and his friends looked healthier and better nourished than the other young men, so they were allowed to honor God by eating vegetables instead of that really good food.

Person, I don’t like this story at all. I think you’re trying to turn everyone into vegetarians. No way am I giving up all the yummy stuff.

A Pile of Rocks

Rocks piled on top of each otherThis strange thing showed up in the wash on my trails today. A pile of rocks. It looks like a trail marker but it can’t be. The wash isn’t a trail. It’s just a cool place with lots of good smells that I like to walk in.

And sometimes when it rains the wash turns into a stream. It washes away all the cool smells and brings in new ones. But that’s why this new thing can’t be a trail marker.

Can you imagine a trail marker in the middle of a stream? Maybe if there were stepping stones and it marked the best path, but all there is in that spot are small rocks and sand .

What kind of person would put that trail marker there?

.

Bongo looking at the rock pile

Maybe they were lost and figured if they ended up going in circles they would know it. You think they’d figure it out by the smells though.

Or maybe they put it there as a target for birds. The birds could fly right over and aim at it. As long as they’re not aiming at my head that’s okay. I guess they shouldn’t aim at my person’s head either.

Oh, wait a minute. I just figured it out. One of my friends left this here.

It’s a new message post. Now I don’t have to sniff all over to see which of my friends has been in the wash lately.

Follow the Leader

Tangled in a TreeSometimes I like to play a game with my person when we’re out on my trails. I’m not sure if she really likes playing it with me. She doesn’t always act like she’s having much fun. I think it’s great though.

I call the game Follow the Leader, and of course I’m always the leader. My person tries to lead but I always run back in front of her.

The best way to play this game is to go around a tree  and refuse to come back the way I went in. Since my person is attached to my leash she has to follow me.

She doesn’t seem to want to follow me most of the time. She keeps mumbling something about low branches. I’m not sure what she’s talking about. I fit right under them with no problem. If she would walk on four legs like I do she’d fit under them too.

She usually spoils the game at this point. I’m trying to go out the other side and she’s trying to pull me back the way I went in. We usually end up at a standstill.

She’s not going to win. She’s going to have to go under those branches.

What!? She tricked me. She unhooked my leash and pulled it around the tree. Come on, person. You’re supposed to crawl under those branches. What fun is this?

Yucca Yellow Flowers

Yucca with Yellow FlowersNothing exciting happened today. I don’t know what I’m going to write about. All I saw was this darn yucca plant with yellow flowers in it.

My friend Rumpy is having a poetry day on Friday and I’ve been trying to think what I should write – so maybe I’ll get some poetry practice in now. I’ve got to fill up the space with something. So here goes.

Yucca Yellow Flowers

Last year I yearned for adventure

Much more than I found in my yard

Scratchy offered me yarn and a yo-yo

and I yelped when I bit it too hard

My younger person served me some yogurt

and yummy it turned out to be

but I let out a yap when he didn’t

say yes to my need to be free

Yesterday I ran for my trails

Off yonder I started to cower

And I yelled when I felt the sharp poke of

a yucca with yellow flowers

Thunder Run

Bongo trying to run from thunderI think my person did it to me on purpose. Almost as soon as we went outside for a walk I heard her mumble something about lightning. Then no sooner than we got on my trails I heard it. It wasn’t loud but it was definitely there. That low rolling sound of thunder.

I immediately started running. If I go fast enough I might be able to get away from it – but my person had other ideas. Boing! I hit the end of the leash. I was attached to my person and I can’t ever seem to get her to run.

Come on, person. If we move fast enough we might be able to escape that thing. Hurry up!

My person would have nothing to do with it. I’m not sure why. She’s strange sometimes.

I decided since my person wouldn’t run with me I’d better protect her, so I stuck close by her.

Bongo staying close

When she started to turn to head back home I did everything I could to convince her not to go that way. That’s where the thunder was coming from. My person needs some serious training. She wouldn’t listen at all.

We headed back home and I couldn’t decide if I should try running ahead or stick close to my person – so I did both. I went straight home and didn’t even detour to go in my wash like I usually do.

We finally made it. That was really hard, but I got my person home safe. I really thought that thunder was going to get her.

Hazardous Trails

Bike Rider on RocksMy person is trying to tell me that my message board really is a bike rack and the bike that was stuck in it really was supposed to be there. But I don’t think so. And you know why?

Because I keep seeing bikes on my trails. If people were supposed to stick their bikes in my message board then why would they still be taking them on my trails?

Today we saw a guy who maybe should have left his bike in my message board. He rolled down a hill and up a ledge full of jutting rocks. He made it up, but when his friends couldn’t do the same thing he went back to show them how.

Well this time he didn’t make it and he got a flat tire instead.

All because he didn’t leave his bike in my message board.

Maybe I should leave a new message on my message board.
