Chase Away the Thunder

Will these work?

Will these work?

I am bummed. I had a big celebration on September 1st because I thought it was the end of monsoon season. No more thunder. And it was good for a few days. I was happy I didn’t have to worry about a big monster reaching out of the sky and grabbing me – and squeezing me to little bits.

Then it happened. It came back. Not only thunder, but loud rain pounding down on the roof – so loud that I wanted to curl up into a little ball and hide. But I can’t. There’s nowhere to hide from that stuff. Guess I’ll have another party. This time I’m going to use party horns and noisemakers. Maybe they’ll be loud enough to chase away the thunder.

Gizmo

Sometimes I know someone when I’ve never actually met them. Sometimes my people come home with smells from other animals and sometimes I’ve smelled those same smells before. I feel like I know those animals, but I don’t like it when other animals get attention from my people. After all, they’re my people.

There’s one cat that I’ve smelled on my people before, that I also smell on my little friend. The friend I wrote about in my last blog. This cat is getting awfully familiar with a lot of people that I know. I’d really like to meet this cat in person so I can chase him away.

My person said it wouldn’t be nice to chase this cat, but she told me this cat sleeps in strange places. Something about a sink. If that’s the case I could probably jump high enough to turn on the water faucet. I wonder how wet the cat would get before I had a chance to chase it.

Friends

Shoot some more darts

Shoot some more darts please

I have a little friend that comes over to visit sometimes. When his mother brings him I get really excited. I’m not sure why, but I usually get locked in a bedroom. This makes me mad and I scratch on the door until someone lets me out. Usually my little friend comes and lets me out after his mother leaves. I like playing with him.

There’s a problem though. Lots of times my little friend and my person get on the floor and play with each other. And they ignore me! I don’t like being ignored so I get right in the middle of them and start playing. The problem is that my little friend is so little that I sometimes knock him down. He doesn’t seem to mind but my person locks me in the bedroom again.

Sometimes I have to scratch on the door for a long time. Ignored again. Eventually my little friend wants the Nerf guns that are locked in this room with me. Yay! Not only do I get out of here, but I get to chase Nerf darts. My little friend must be a bad aim though. It’s really hard to chase the darts for him when they’re all hitting me.

Garbage Hound

Bongo getting the garbageSometimes the lid to the garbage can in the kitchen doesn’t close all the way. When that happens it’s really hard to have patience. If I help myself to something while my people are there I will get into immediate trouble. So I have to wait. Sometimes I have to wait a long time. But when they finally leave the house I’m ready.

Let’s see. What kind of treats can I find today? Everything smells like food, but I usually don’t find much actual food. I guess because I already ate my people’s leftovers. Darn. Why didn’t they save something for me to pick out of the garbage? Oh well. I think I’ll try this container. It smells really good and it has a nice feel when I chew on it. Really nice. It feels great tearing this apart.

Oh oh. I hear my people coming home and all this evidence is too hard to eat. Oh, no. I’m in trouble now.

P.S. I’ve got to give credit to my friend Bassa for giving me the idea to write about this. http://bassasblog.wordpress.com/2011/09/02/zen-and-the-art-of-chewing/

Where to Go?

Yuccas are Mean

Yuccas are Mean

A manly dog needs something to lift his leg against. A bush, a tree, a fire hydrant – it doesn’t really matter what it is, but he’s gotta have something. My back yard used to have some plants growing in it that weren’t quite bushes, but I could pretend. They were close enough to being bushes that I could do my business on them and feel good about it. But my person cut them down and took them away.

You know what I have left? Yucca plants. You know what a yucca is? It’s a bush shaped thing full of pointy things that are a cross between a leaf and a spear. Every time I get near one of those yucca plants I get poked. I move a little bit, and get poked again. When you gotta go now it’s a real challenge to find a position where you can lift your leg without getting poked. It usually takes at least three or four tries. Ouch! I hope my person brings back those bushes.

Frisbee Drag

Frisbee Drag side viewFrisbee Drag front viewWhen I’ve been catching Frisbees and I need to catch my breath I start playing a new game. I call it “Drag the Frisbee.” It’s really fun. There’s no grass in my yard – just rocks and dirt. My person said something about the rocks being in order and the yard really pretty until I came to live with them. Not anymore. I walk backwards and drag the Frisbee through the yard with my front feet. It makes nice little paths through the rocks and dirt, but I don’t really pay much attention to that. It’s just so much fun to drag that Frisbee.

I haven’t figured this one out though. Every time I drag my Frisbee and then take it back to my person to toss for me, she makes me go back inside. When we get inside she makes me give the Frisbee to her. I wish she’d let me keep it so I can chew on it for awhile.

Happy September 1st

Happy September 1stToday is September 1st. I’m really excited. I know it probably doesn’t mean much to you. It’s not a special holiday or anything. It’s not even a dog holiday. But for me it’s the best day of the year. You want to know why? For two months now I’ve been putting up with something I don’t like at all. Something I’m very afraid of. It’s called thunder. July and August are called monsoon season here. That’s when most of our thunderstorms come. But now it’s not July anymore and it’s not August. It’s September and that means no more thunderstorms. Yay!

What’s that? Did I just hear thunder rumbling in the distance? Noooo, nooooo! It can’t possibly be. It must be something else. It’s September 1st.

Who Won the Tug o War?

Dogs playing Tug o WarI think I’m really in trouble. I didn’t mean anything by it. I just wanted to go hang with those two dogs. I know, my person didn’t want me to. She held my collar tight so I wouldn’t. But I was determined. Something about them. I just had to get over there and check it out. So I lunged with all my strength. My person was supposed to let my leash out, or let go of it or something. But she didn’t. She held on to me and went right over on the ground. I was mad at first because I really wanted to go for those dogs. When I saw her on the ground I was worried. What’s she going to do to me now? Or what’s my other person going to do when we go home? He’s younger, but he’s the biggest one of us and he gets mad at me sometimes.

But the worst thing ever happened. I had to miss my walk. When my person got up she turned around and headed back home and took me with her. We’d barely gotten out of the house.

Getting Even

Bongo's Mess

Bongo's Mess

Yesterday both my people left for a long time – again. They just did that a few days ago. My special friend came over to let me out. Last time she was here she tricked me. She snuck out the door when it was thundering and I really needed someone to stay with me.

This time I decided I would get her back so when she let me out in the yard I jumped the fence. That’ll teach her. I didn’t want her to find me right away so I immediately ran over to the next block. This is great! Freedom! But wait, she’s supposed to come looking for me. Where is she? Last time she talked to my person on that little box and learned her tricks. Maybe she’s doing that again. My person would tell her where to find me. Guess I’d better head back and check. Here she comes. She tricked me by making me come back to my own street first.

Hey, wait a minute! You can’t put me back in the house and leave! That makes me mad. I’m finding a way out of here. Back door’s shut. Maybe if I move the mat out of the way I can get through it. Nope. This window doesn’t work either and knocking over the guitar in front of it didn’t help. How about the bathroom? Oh no. The only thing I can move there is the mat. I’m not getting anywhere. I just want to get out so someone will come and chase me. Guess I’ll spill my water instead.

Trail Smells

Good Smells

Good Smells

When my person takes me out on the trail my favorite thing to do is smell. There are so many good smells out there. Most of the smells I like are the ones left by other animals – dogs, coyotes, rabbits and things. I never seem to get my full taste of a smell though. My person just keeps on walking and if she gets to the end of my leash she pulls on it. She spoils all the fun sometimes.

When I find a really good smell and don’t want to leave it I hold my ground. We’ve gotten into a real tug-of-war at times. If I wasn’t so anxious to keep smelling, the tug-of-war would be fun. There’s a time for everything, but not when I’ve got a good smell.
