Something to Say

Bongo smiling in front of the "Film Car"Awhile back I saw the Film Car on my trails. I tried really hard to get noticed by that car so maybe I could be in a film, but no such luck. Nobody cared, and after a few days I didn’t see that car on my trails anymore. I guess it went back home to film some other dog.

But that Film Car isn’t the only unusual car I’ve seen parked at my trails or in my neighborhood.

There’s another car trying to tell me that I shouldn’t worry about trying to be in films. I should just be myself.

.

.

These cars must be trying to teach me something. I guess this next car is saying that whether I get into films or not I can still choose my attitude, and I’d better make it good.

While I was going around being joyful – because that’s what I always am anyway when I’m on my trails – I found this other guy that I really could get used to hanging out with.

But I don’t know about this next guy. He could slice everything in two.

I bet he’d be great to go see if I ever had the hiccups though.

I think I’ll head out on my trails now. I’ve seen enough interesting cars, and learned enough good lessons for awhile.

But someday, I’ll see what other interesting cars I can find.

Until then…

Strange Spots

Prickly pear cactus with spotsThis is highly unusual. I’ve never seen a prickly pear cactus on my trails before with spots like this.

It’s downright suspicious if you ask me.

How did these spots get here, and what do they mean?

Could this cactus have a spot causing disease?

I certainly hope not, because that would mean these spots could spread all over my trails.

Can you imagine every cactus on my trails bearing spots?

And then what happens if those spots jump even further – if they jump onto another kind of cactus, or hop onto the bushes or trees.

This is terrible! What if, when I’m leaving a message for my friends, one of those spots jumps off a bush and lands on me?

What would I do then?

This is getting really serious. I’d better put on my Detective Dog hat and investigate.

That’s better. Now I’m seeing things a little more clearly.

Wait! What is this?

I’ve got it now.

Those spots aren’t the beginning of an infectious disease at all.

This is much worse.

This is the beginning of an invasion of a far more dangerous kind.

I’d better put together an army of dogs to combat this.

This is no cactus!

Quail on the Trail

Bongo looking the other wayThis time of year it’s never quiet on my trails. Birds are always out there making a ruckus, but the ones who seem to have the most interesting conversations are the quail.

Quail hang around here all year, but in the winter we don’t see them much. They hang out in the bushes until I get near – then they make some little gobbly noises and run off.

Silly quail. If they’d stay put and quiet I’d only know they were near because of their smell – and my person wouldn’t know they were there at all.

But now that the weather has gotten warmer those quail are everywhere.

I go out in my backyard…

.

Quail walking along fence

and find them on the fence.

I go in the front yard…

Quail leaving a driveway

and they’re in my driveway.

I head to my trails…

Quail on a fence

and they’re on the trail neighbor’s fence.

Or they’re up in a tree…

Quail in a tree

calling out for a mate.

And those mate callers don’t have a little gobbly kind of call. They’re loud and it sounds more like a cawing kind of call. I guess they’re really desperate for a girlfriend.

But sometimes those quail are tricky. Sometimes they make a different kind of sound. It sounds almost like a kitten in the bushes.

Maybe I should take Scratchy out on the trails with me.

Scratchy on the Couch

He’d find that kitten quail for sure.

Not Alone

Bongo on the trailIt was a nice, quiet day on my trails and I was enjoying having them all to myself when my person had to tell me we weren’t really alone out here.

I looked all around and I didn’t see any people or any dogs so I don’t know what she was talking about.

My person told me to look some more.

I think she’s nuts. There’s no one else here.

Hey person, I’m done looking. There’s no one here. I need to get on with my sniffing to find out who was here.

Well, check this out. Look at the little guy in this cactus flower.

Bee in a hedgehog cactus flower

And here’s another one. Trying to bury itself.

Bee in a prickly pear cactus flower

How do you expect me to notice these guys if they bury themselves inside the flowers?

***

Or this guy?

Beetle in a hole in the ground

This guy really is trying to hide. He found his own hidey hole.

Red and black beetle

At least this one is out in the open. I think he wants to show off. I’ve never seen one like him before.

***

Oh, look now. Even the ants are getting into the act.

Blossoms and an ant on a leaf

What am I supposed to do person? These are my trails. But look how many insects there are. I’m afraid they’re going to take over.

It’s useless trying to get rid of them. They’re everywhere.

This is really depressing.

I might as well be chasing butterflies.

You Don’t Want That

Bongo looking like he really wants somethingYou don’t want that, do you?

You already ate some and that one’s just sitting there. I don’t think you’re hungry anymore.

You’re not going to give it to me? Why not?

You’re going to take it with you?

But it will get cold, and dried up, and shriveled.

You’d better give it to me.

It’s just sitting there on the table.

You don’t want it anyway.

Bongo with a begging look

Where are you taking that?

You’re not putting it in the fridge, are you?

It’ll sit there and turn hard. Then nobody will eat it. You’ll throw it out and it will go to waste.

You’d better give it to me.

A burger and Bongo's nose

What? Wait – that’s getting awfully close to my nose.

You’re not teasing me, are you?

Is it really for me?

It’s for me?

Bongo taking a bite of a burger

Woo hoo! Mine!

A note to all my readers out there: No dog was harmed by eating this burger. You actually saw me eat burger shaped dog food. I would never in any way, shape, or form, ever consider eating anything unhealthy.

Backyard Mysteries

Bongo looking at the fenceWhen I went out in my backyard last night I was confronted by strange smells, sights, and sounds. All coming from the other side of the fence.

This is the fence that Moe lives on the other side of. Moe likes to bark at me through the fence anytime we’re both outside.

Here’s a picture of Moe – the only time we got to meet without a fence between us.

.

.

Bongo and Moe on the trail

But this wasn’t about Moe this time. Other things were happening in Moe’s yard – and Moe wasn’t even around.

I’ve got a pretty strong sense of smell, but I didn’t even need my special Detective Dog sensory senses. Even my person smelled this one. The smell of smoke emanated (hey person, I don’t even know what that word means) from Moe’s yard.

And then I saw it – right through the cracks in the fence. Bright orange crackling flames – all contained in one little spot.

My person said it looked like a campfire, but I always thought you had to go camping to have a campfire. Is somebody camping in Moe’s backyard?

I’d better check this out.

Bongo peeking down over the short fence

Just pretend I turned on the floodlights for this picture since all this happened in the dark of night.

And then I heard the strangest sound coming from Moe’s yard. It sounded like music. Guitar music and singing. I hear music coming from the radio, or sometimes from my person’s computer, but I’ve never before heard music coming from a yard.

I wonder if they would mind if I sang along.

Silly String

Bongo covered with Silly StringI think my younger person tried to tie me up. He had this can and he started spraying stuff out of it.

That stuff looked like string, and he sprayed it all over me.

I know he wanted to tie me up, but I guess my younger person underestimated me.

That string couldn’t hold a lick to me. I could break right through it, piece of cake.

Did I say cake? Is there cake around here?

Oh. Never mind.

Back to that string.

.

Bongo looking at Silly String on the floor

I wrestled that string to the floor. And there it lay.

Now what?

Scratchy likes to play with string. And he’s not as strong as me.

I could get him interested in playing with that stuff and then wrap him up in it.

He’d be wrapped like a cocoon before he knew what hit him.

Hey, wait!

What’s my younger person doing?

Bongo looking up with string on his back

Why’d you put the string up there?

Hidden Hedgehogs

Bongo under a bush looking at cactus blossomsLast year there were tons of little hedgehog cacti blooming on my trails. This year they are blooming again, but not as many.

Maybe that’s why they seem to be hiding themselves. They must think they need protection, and since there’s no protection in numbers they’re looking for other ways.

Check out this one that I’m trying to get at.

It’s hiding under a catclaw bush. There’s a reason these bushes are called what they’re called.

But if I can brave Scratchy’s claws I can brave anything. This bush ain’t got nothing on me.

Hedgehog cactus blooming under prickly pear

Here’s another one trying to use prickly things for protection. I know what those prickly things do. I’m staying out of there.

Hedgehog cactus blooming under a bush

This one really tucked itself away. If it hadn’t been for its bright color we never would have seen it.

Hedgehog cactus blossoms

My person will crawl under anything for a good picture. It’s a good thing that bush didn’t have pricklers. I would have had to take the tweezers to her when we got home.

Hedgehog cactus blooming under bush

It seems that all the cacti are hiding under bushes.

Hedgehog cactus flowerss

I think my person was brushing dirt off her knees after taking this picture.

Hedgehog cactus flowers surrounded by a bush

This cactus used a different approach. Instead of blooming under a bush it decided to bloom in a bush.

But this next cactus is very brave indeed.

Trekking with Toby

Toby and Bongo on the TrailWhat perfect timing!

Today when I headed out my front door to go for a walk on my trails Toby, my neighbor dog was heading out his front door too. To go for a walk on my trails.

Toby’s my friend so I always let him use my trails, but we don’t often use them at the same time. Today would be a special treat.

Toby always smells really good so I give him a few sniffs every time we meet.

.

Bongo and Toby

Then off we headed to the trails.

We were walking along enjoying each other’s company and checking out a smell or two, when I looked back (I’m usually in the lead) and Toby was going the wrong way.

Toby was taking the trail that headed back home!

Toby, wait! We’ve barely gotten started.

Come back Toby! There are more trails to explore. More adventures to be had.

More smells to sniff.

Toby missed it all. I had to trek on the trails without him.

And what’s more disappointing is that I had hoped he could help me with my Detective Dog work – you know, kind of like Dr. Watson was to Sherlock Holmes.

Because I’ve got another mystery to solve.

I’ve got to figure out what this giant asparagus is doing poking out of this spiky ball.

Yucca with a shoot coming out

Maybe I should go bark at Toby’s door.

The Empty Trail

Bongo in an empty parking lotYesterday I posted about my hike in West Fork. It was so much fun. There were lots of people and dogs on the trail. And shade. It was nice and cool there.

Today I went back to my own trails.

Empty.

The parking lot was empty.

The trails were empty.

The only ones on my trails were me, my person, and a few birds.

I didn’t even see any lizards.

Bongo on an empty trail

I think everybody went to West Fork and stayed there.

Maybe I should go back there too.

I miss all the people and dogs. It was cool and shady there. And there was water.

But wait a minute. I just thought of something.

These are my trails, and I’ve finally got them all to myself.

I don’t have to tell any other dogs whose trails these are.

I don’t have to worry about people who might not want to give me loves.

I don’t even have to stand aside while people – and dogs – come walking past me.

I think I’ll put a sign on my trails. “Bongo’s Trails – Go to West Fork.”

I won’t leave that sign up forever though.

Because I want to go back to West Fork again. I’ll take that sign down then.
