Popping In

Jesus Appears to the Disciples - watercolor by William Brassey HolePerson, last week you told me that after Jesus disappeared from his tomb He kept popping up here and there.

Sometimes He’d show up and sometimes He’d disappear.

So now you’re telling me He’s still popping up?

I like to jump up and down a lot, but I’m not sure I can keep up with Jesus’ popping up.

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

***

Wait a minute!

This is too much.

You mean Jesus popped right through that locked door?

Are you sure He didn’t knock first and one of the disciples let Him in?

Yes, I’m listening.

***

After He said this, He showed them His hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

***

So you mean, if Jesus’ hands and side were all healed the disciples wouldn’t know it was Him?

How come He didn’t show His hands and side to those other disciples?

You know, the two that He walked along the road with.

I am listening.

***

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

***

Where is Jesus sending them?

Maybe He’s sending them to walk on my trails with me.

That would be cool!

I’m listening. But wouldn’t it be better if the disciples were here and I could listen to them?

I bet they’d have some pretty good stories to tell.

***

And with that Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

***

I guess those disciples need to go to someone else.

I don’t have any sins to forgive.

***

Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe it.”

***

I sure hope Jesus pops in again when Thomas is around.

Otherwise Thomas will be a doubter forever.

Maybe if he makes Jesus some popcorn…

Arrow

Bongo and an arrow made of pebblesWould you look at this?

Somebody put an arrow on my trails so everybody knows which way to go.

It’s a good thing too, because someone might go the wrong way through the parking lot and end up out on the street.

Then who knows what would happen.

Cars don’t go very fast on my street so they wouldn’t be bothered and they’d just keep wandering.

They might get lost.

They could end up all the way down by the highway.

And cars go fast there.

Yup. It’s a good thing somebody put this arrow here.

.

.

Bongo looking away from the arrow

Are you coming person?

It’s this way.

Colorful Trouble

Bongo and some hedgehog cacti in bloomWhat’s this?

This splash of color here.

What is it?

Is it what I think it is?

Because if it is I’m really in trouble.

It means my walks are going to take forever the next couple of weeks.

Didn’t this just happen last year?

How come it has to happen again so soon?

.

I think I’m going to protest.

Hedgehog cactus in bloom

Yup. The hedgehog cacti are all starting to bloom again.

And my person has to stop and take pictures of every one of them.

I might as well roll over and play dead.

Missing the Photo Ops

Bongo profile on the trailWe heard a really bad flute player on my trails today.

She was hanging out with the rock piles.

But my person wouldn’t take a picture.

Something about embarrassing the flute player.

I don’t know why she would have been embarrassed by having her picture taken.

Now if my person had recorded her playing the flute she probably would have hid under all those rock piles.

It would have been really embarrassing.

So we walked on and we saw a snake.

And my person still wouldn’t take a picture.

Something about the snake hiding before she could get her camera out.

She could have just yanked it by the tail before it got away.

It didn’t have one of those rattler things on it that I’m not supposed to play with.

But that didn’t happen.

So what does my person take a picture of?

Penstemon

Flowers!

Do you believe it?

All those good photo opportunities and she takes pictures of flowers.

So I decided I was going to do something about those flowers so my person couldn’t take any more pictures of them.

Bongo with penstemon around him

Help!

Those flowers must be powered by aliens.

Almost an Adventure

Bongo on the kitchen floor looking sadMy person has been glued to the computer the last few days.

Even more than usual.

So I haven’t been having many adventures.

Well, she is still letting me take her for walks on my trails, but she never wants to take the extra time to have an adventure.

So I don’t have anything to tell you today.

The best I can come up with is a soon to be adventure.

And it has to do with flowers, so you know I’m desperate.

They’ve got their mouths open so you know they’re looking for something to eat.

.

.

But what they don’t know is that they’re about to be eaten themselves.

Weather Mischief

Hedgehog cactus in bloomThere has definitely been some mischief around here this weekend.

Weather mischief.

First, I saw my first cactus flower of the year.

I think that’s supposed to mean spring is here.

At least I guess so. We never did have winter this year.

Until this weekend, that is.

Because a little while after I saw this flower it snowed.

I don’t know what the weather’s up to.

No good, I think.

And these prickly pear cacti must have thought so too, because they decided to protect this lonely little flower.

And then my mischievous puddle finally decided to show up.

Bongo in his puddle

I was really happy to see it, but the way it’s been lately it’ll probably go off and hide somewhere again tomorrow.

It hasn’t been hanging around much lately.

***

But then my person had to add to the mischief.

She knows how much I don’t like waiting while she takes flower pictures.

So now she’s getting even worse.

She’s taking pictures of flowers before they even turn into flowers.

Hedgehog cacti getting ready to bloom

Prickly pear cactus getting ready to bloom

This is getting really serious.

All this mischief surrounding me.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do.

I think what I need is one of these.

I did spell that right, didn’t I?

Walking Along

The Road to Emmaus - Carl BlochI really need to attach Jesus to my leash.

First He tells Mary Magdalene not to hold onto Him, and sends her away to talk to the disciples.

Now you’re telling me he just popped up somewhere else?

I’m listening.

I’ve got to figure out where Jesus is going so I can follow.

***

Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.

***

How come you never take me on seven mile walks, person?

I am listening.

***

They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing Him.

***

Did Jesus disguise Himself, or what?

Nobody seems to be recognizing Him.

***

Jesus asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

“What things?” He asked.

***

I don’t get it.

Was Jesus pulling their legs?

Okay, I’ll listen.

***

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him; but we had hoped that He was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find His body.

***

No wonder they didn’t find Jesus’ body.

He keeps popping up all over the place.

I guess it wasn’t any fun staying in that tomb, so He didn’t

***

They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said He was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but Him they did not see.”

***

They just have to wait until Jesus decides to pop up.

I am too listening.

***

Jesus said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.

***

Did He tell them Bible stories?

I like Bible stories.

***

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if He were going farther. But they urged Him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them.

***

You mean Jesus actually stayed there?

I thought He was just popping in and out.

***

When Jesus was at the table with them, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He disappeared from their sight.

***

I guess He really was popping in and out.

***

They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem.

***

Too bad they couldn’t just pop back to Jerusalem.

They had to walk seven miles in the dark.

Hey person, you don’t have to take me on that kind of walk.

***

In Jerusalem they found the Eleven (disciples) and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.”

***

More popping.

***

Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when He broke the bread.

***

Jesus even had food.

I’m for sure attaching Him to my leash as soon as He pops in here.

Cat Conspiracy

Bongo and two cats on the couch on the other side of the roomI’m trying to ignore what’s going on behind me, but it doesn’t look good.

Most of the time Gizmo and Scratchy are hanging out in different rooms of the house.

I hardly ever see them together except when my person feeds them.

And then I’m not paying much attention because I’m so busy eating.

But I’m getting really concerned right now.

It looks like a cat conspiracy to me.

.

.

Gizmo and Scratchy on the back of the futon

They never hang out on the same couch together.

They must be planning something.

I wonder how I can get them to move without getting any claws in my face.

Never mind.

Arbor Day

Bongo sniffing below a sunlit treeHappy Arbor Day!

Today is the day that everybody celebrates by planting trees.

Which is great, because trees are a good place for me and my friends to leave messages – and to check for them.

Bongo tied to and tangled on a tree

Well, maybe trees aren’t so great all the time.

Sometimes you can get tangled up in them.

Bongo with his leash around a tree

And sometimes you can’t find the right way around the tree.

I take back what I said about Arbor Day.

We’ve already got enough trees.
