Who Will Win?

Bongo on the trail looking upI was walking along my trails minding my own business when I looked up.

And in a tree were two birds.

.

.

.

.

.

I wonder what would happen if one of them decided to pull mischief on the other.

Hummingbird and hawk in a tree

Which one would win?

Hawk

Would it be the hawk?

Definitely the largest and most powerful of the two.

A tried and true hunter.

Would the hawk win?

Or would it be…

Hummingbird in a tree

…the hummingbird?

I’m going for the hummingbird.

That hummingbird already has it’s pointy beak aimed directly at the hawk.

One perfectly aimed dive bomb and that hawk will never know what hit him.

I’m voting for the little guy.

***

Unless the little guy turns out to be…

Gizmo on his back on the couch

…a cat.

Loudmouth

Bongo in front of the bush with berriesThere are a lot of quail living on my trails, but I don’t see them all that often.

Most of the time they’re hiding in the bushes.

If I didn’t smell them I wouldn’t even know they were there, except that they give themselves away.

When my person and I come anywhere near where they’re hiding they scurry off.

If they’d stayed where they were we’d never see them, but we usually get a glimpse of them before they’ve hidden themselves in some more bushes.

.

.

.

But this time of year there are some lonely male quails who hang out in plain sight and make lots of noise so everybody knows they’re there.

Quail on a fence with pink flowers nearby

This fence is near the beginning of my trails, before the houses end and the wild things begin.

I guess that quail thought it was a good place to look for a girlfriend.

Quail on fence

Posing will get you everywhere.

Believe me, I know.

I hope those girls come by and notice soon.

If that guy finds a girlfriend maybe things will quiet down on my trails.

Quail in a tree

Hey, wait a minute!

That quail decided I was right about my trails being too noisy…

So he moved into the tree in my front yard?

No Mr. Quail, that’s not what I meant.

Does anybody have any earplugs?

Arbor Day

Bongo sniffing below a sunlit treeHappy Arbor Day!

Today is the day that everybody celebrates by planting trees.

Which is great, because trees are a good place for me and my friends to leave messages – and to check for them.

Bongo tied to and tangled on a tree

Well, maybe trees aren’t so great all the time.

Sometimes you can get tangled up in them.

Bongo with his leash around a tree

And sometimes you can’t find the right way around the tree.

I take back what I said about Arbor Day.

We’ve already got enough trees.

Climbing a Tree

Zacchaeus being called down from the treeWhat?

You’re telling me there’s a song that goes with this Bible story?

But you won’t let me post it because it might irritate some of my friends?

Oh, it’s a kid’s song?

What about a dog song? Woo woo!

I’m still waiting for Jesus to give me extra treats.

Okay, I’ll listen to the story.

But if I don’t like it I’m gonna start singing.

.

***

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.

***

I bet Zacchaeus has some extra treats for me.

What? Nobody liked tax collectors?

Then he really needs to give me some treats.

I’ll like him if he gives me treats.

I am listening.

***

Zacchaeus wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

***

Okay, now I’ve got it.

In order to get Jesus’ attention you’ve got to be up in a tree.

Sounds easy enough.

Oh wait. What do I do?

I don’t know how to climb a tree.

Scratchy, come here. Now!

I need you to give me tree climbing lessons.

I’ll listen – as soon as I get up in this tree.

***

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “Jesus has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

***

I guess Jesus had better think twice about who’s house he visits.

***

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

***

Zacchaeus, I think you cheated me out of some treats.

***

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

***

I think the only thing that’s been lost are my treats.

***

***

Don’t tell my person, but if you really want to hear the song about Zacchaeus, it’s right here.

Rock Fruit

Red rocks in a treeThis is strange.

I’ve never seen rock fruit before.

I thought these trees just grew little berries.

But how else could these rocks have gotten here?

Maybe a really big storm could blow rocks into trees.

But we haven’t had any storms like that lately.

I guess I should investigate.

.

Time for my Detective Dog hat.

Bongo with Detective Dog hat covering his eyes

My first investigation will be how to reach those rocks so I can check them out.

I’ve got to see if they’re really some kind of fruit that looks like rocks – or if they’re really just rocks like they look like.

Maybe I can find a big rock to stand on – or some branches.

Oh, wait. This is too hard.

Do I really care what those rocks are doing?

I think I’ll do something else instead.

I’m going to give you something to investigate.

So here it is.

Here’s your investigation.

Where’s Bongo?

Squirrel Thief

Bongo looking out the windowWould you look at that? Just look at that!

I know I’m not supposed to be on the couch, person – but look!

Just look at what that squirrel’s doing.

He’s stealing it!

Right in front of my eyes.

We’ve got to stop him.

Let me at him, person.

.

He’ll steal them all if we don’t stop him.

Squirrel in a tree with a Christmas light in his mouth

Look, person!

That squirrel’s got it in his mouth and he’s running off with it.

How can you let him get away with that?

Person, that squirrel stole one of our Christmas lights!

Right off the tree outside.

I was watching and he didn’t even care.

He just kept working at it until he got that light loose.

***

Well, if you’re not going to do anything person, I will.

And I’m going to get all my friends to help.

I’m posting a reward.

Wanted poster of the squirrel

I’ll get that pesky squirrel if it’s the last thing I do.

What Color are my Berries?

Juniper berriesThe berries on the juniper trees at my house are blue – well, this year they’re more like a chalky white.

And there are blue chalky white berries on some of the trees on my trails too.

But the berries on some of the trees on my trails are different.

I’ve been trying to figure it out.

.

.

Bongo sniffing the ground under a juniper tree

It must be something in the soil.

It doesn’t smell any different.

Maybe the dirt here is redder than the dirt at my house.

Juniper tree with pink berries

Yup, it looks really red around here.

Well, I thought I figured it out, but I still don’t think it makes sense.

Red, pink – they’re not the same, are they?

Maybe somebody can help me make sense out of this.

Or maybe I need to go home and get my Detective Dog hat.

Detective Dog

I just hope somebody doesn’t pick all those berries before I figure this out, or I might really be up a creek.

Did I just say creek? Maybe I should just go swimming.

Woo woo! Last one in is a rotten e…

Wait a minute! There’s no creek here, and I’ve still got a mystery to solve.

Pink juniper berries

Yup, they’re pink alright.

So now I guess what I’ve got to figure out is –

Who took the time to paint all those berries?

New Expedition

View in a wash in SedonaToday I got to go on a new adventure. I got to go exploring.

I can’t believe we’ve never been here before. It’s my wash, after all.

But it’s the other part of my wash.

When we get to this place in my trails we usually go left and head back home. To explore this part we have to go right.

Finally I talked my person into going right for a change.

And we were off – on a new expedition.

Bongo exploring a dry wash

At first I had a good time checking out all the new smells in this wash.

But then I saw something really strange.

A barkless tree.

Barkless tree

It’s a good thing this tree is not a dog. It would have a terrible time giving warnings in dog talk.

We headed up past that tree and kept on going.

And then I saw it.

Something I’ve never seen on my trails before.

I think somebody has been expecting me because…

Bongo by a stone wall

they started building me a house.

Whoever is building it must be coming back because they haven’t finished with it.

The walls are almost high enough for me, but the house still needs a roof.

I looked to see if I could see anyone around.

Bongo in front of stone structure

I don’t see anybody this way.

Bongo looking opposite direction in front of stone structure

Nobody over this direction either.

The house builder doesn’t seem to be around anywhere.

Bongo looking at stone structure

Guess I’ll go inspect the place.

As long as there’s no rain I can wait for the roof.

New Fruit

Bongo in profileI found an answer. And I didn’t even know there was a mystery.

I guess my person thought there was a mystery, but I wasn’t paying any attention.

So I didn’t even need my Detective Dog hat to find the answer.

Maybe my person should get a Detective Dog Person hat.

Here’s what happened.

Near my house, on the way to my trails, are some pine trees.

A few years ago my person noticed some blossoms peeking out from between the pines.

Pine trees don’t have blossoms and my person thought this looked pretty cool. She even made me stop while she took pictures of them.

White blossoms and pines

Every year there were a few more blossoms peeking out, and the branches they were on grew leaves.

Blossoms and Pines

But that was as far as it went. The only mystery I could find was why my person stopped and took pictures every year.

But this year something else happened.

The tree grew fruit.

Fruit growing on a tree

Green fuzzy fruit.

But we didn’t get rain and the fruit didn’t get any bigger.

I didn’t think I’d ever find out what that fruit was.

It seemed to be a new kind of fruit that I’d never heard of before.

Green, puny fruit.

But I walked by that fruit one more time and something had changed.

Almonds growing on a tree

Now that tree had green, puny, split fruit.

My person said she knew what this fruit was and she never even got her Detective Person hat.

Oh nuts. It’s not fruit at all.

It’s an almond tree.

Bird Tree

Tree full of birdsThe birds on my trails are mostly a transient population. (I don’t know what that means, but my person made me write it.)

Anyway, we get different birds around here all the time.

A few birds hang around here all year, like the quail and the scrub jays, but mostly the birds come and the birds go.

But we always seem to have some kind of birds hanging around here.

Today I was walking on my trails and I heard a bunch of those birds singing and when I looked up I noticed something strange.

Someone must have decided that those transient birds needed someplace to hang out, so they designated one of my trail trees as a bird tree.

Because that’s where all the birds were. They were hanging out on that one bird tree.

Birds on dead branches

But that tree got so full of birds that they must have had an overflow because they had to open up a second bird tree.

Across my trail from the first bird tree was another one.

Juniper tree full of birds

I wonder if this second bird tree is for second class birds – the birds that aren’t allowed in the first tree.

Those second class birds do seem to be hiding so it’s hard to see that they’re in there.

I guess it’s embarrassing to be a second class bird in a second class tree.

Juniper tree with birds and sunlight shining through

I’m sure glad I’m a dog and not a bird.

Bongo looking down the trail

Because all my trails are first class.
