Road Trip

Where are we Going? My younger person is home from school this week and today he and my person told me to get in the car with them. I like jumping in the car but I always get a little nervous about where I might be jumping back out.

We headed down the street and we made a turn. Well, this isn’t the way to the vet. I like the vet. They give me loves and treats there.

And then I got really worried. This is the way to the dog hotel! I don’t like going to the dog hotel. Maybe we should turn around and go back home.

But we kept going. Hey, wait a minute! We don’t ride this far in the car when we go to the dog hotel. Where are we going?

We rode and rode, and finally my person stopped the car. And there was no vet and there was no dog hotel. We were in a big parking lot.

And then we crossed the street.

Fay Canyon Trail Sign

A brand new trail! I hope my people brought lots of water because there are an awful lot of bushes that I need to leave messages on.

After my people assured me we had lots of water with us we headed up the trail.

Bongo and his younger person walking on the trail

We walked for a ways through lots of trees and then we climbed some rocks – and look what I saw!

My younger person went exploring some more, so I thought I might too.

But before I could get very far my younger person came back.

I could sit here forever.

What? It’s time to go back.

I sure hope there’s some treats at the end of this trip.

Dinner at Last

Deutsch: Christus im Hause des Pharisäers, Jac...

Deutsch: Christus im Hause des Pharisäers, Jacopo Tintoretto, Escorial (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Finally! Jesus is going to dinner. I think I’ll tag along and pretend I’m his dog. They’ll have to let me in.

What do you mean they might not let dogs come? They let that lady come and she wasn’t even invited.

Yes, I’ll listen to the story.

***

A Pharisee named Simon invited Jesus to dinner.

***

I wonder if they’re having fish for dinner.

I’m listening – I’m listening.

***

A woman who’d lived a sinful life found out Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house. She showed up with an alabaster jar of perfume.

***

I hope they invited her in and gave her some fish.

I am too listening.

***

The woman stood at Jesus’ feet weeping. She began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and poured perfume on them.

Simon the Pharisee thought to himself that if Jesus was really a prophet He would know that this woman who touched Him was a sinner.

***

I wouldn’t care who that woman was if I got loves. Maybe not on the feet though.

Can I get loves while I listen?

***

Jesus knew what Simon was thinking and He told Simon a story.

“Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both.”

Then Jesus asked Simon which of the two would love the moneylender more.

Simon replied that he thought it would be the one with the bigger debt canceled and Jesus told him he was right.

***

This is where Jesus gives Simon what for, isn’t it?

I am listening. I’m just trying to help you along.

***

Jesus told Simon that when He came into his house Simon hadn’t given him any water to wash His feet, but the woman had washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. Simon had not given Jesus a kiss, but the woman had not stopped kissing His feet. Simon had not put oil on Jesus’ head, but the woman poured perfume on His feet.

Jesus told the woman her many sins were forgiven because she had loved much. And He said that he who has been forgiven little loves little.

The other dinner guests began mumbling among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

***

Would Jesus forgive my sins? I’ll kiss His feet.

Oh wait, I forgot. I’m the perfect dog. I don’t have any sins to forgive.

***

Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

***

I think that woman should have kept hanging out. She probably would have gotten some fish. Oh well, that’s okay. All the more for me.

Fallen Fruit

Bongo sniffing green fruit on the groundI hadn’t even made it to my trails today when I discovered something mysterious.

Strange green things on the ground. What are they? Where did they come from?

I’m still close to home. I think I’d better go back and get my Detective Dog hat.

What do you mean person, we’re not going back? I’ve got a mystery to solve here. I’ve got to be dressed in the proper attire.

Lots of green fruit on the ground

Oh my. This mystery just got deeper. The ground is full of these strange green things.

How did they get here anyway?

Maybe a flock of birds dropped them as they were flying by. Bird bombs. I wonder if anyone got hit by them.

Bongo and fruit on the ground

Now I’ve got another mystery. Person, I really need to get my Detective Dog hat. The mysteries are piling up. Did these green things hit anyone, or not? I can’t possibly solve everything without my hat.

Look up? Where? Why? Are the birds about to drop more of these things?

Tree with green fruit

Would you look at that? There are green things in that tree that look just like the ones on the ground.

Now I’ve got more mysteries. How did those green things get into that tree and why are they staying there?

I don’t care what my person says. I’m heading back for my hat.

Bongo looking cool with his Detective Dog hat on

Okay, I’m ready. Now to look for some clues.

Sunglasses on the Street

Bongo walking past sunglasses on the streetSomebody must really like me. The other day someone left me a dead snake – right in front of my house. And today they left me a pair of sunglasses. All for me.

It took me a minute to find those sunglasses. They didn’t have a very interesting smell so at first I passed them up.

But when I realized what they were I put them right on. The sun was really bright today, so I figured they’d be a great help while I’m out on my trails. I’m sure that’s what somebody was thinking when they left these for me.

But whoever left these sunglasses wasn’t thinking very clearly. They should have known what size I wear. These are just too big.

Sunglasses hanging on Bongo's leash

I put them on, but they slipped right off my nose and landed on my leash.

I’m not sure what my leash is going to do with these sunglasses. But my leash has been through all kinds of things with me, so I’m sure it’ll figure something out.

Wait a minute! What am I doing letting my leash have my new sunglasses? Leashes don’t need sunglasses.

If they won’t stay on my nose I’ll just try something else.

Bongo with sunglasses on top of his head

Now if I could only grow some eyes in the back of my head.

I know! My person sometimes has eyes in the back of her head.

Maybe I can borrow hers.

Berry Load

Bongo with his nose deep in bushesI’ve got to investigate these Manzanita bushes to see what they’re up to this year.

You see, earlier this year they had lots of blossoms. More than I remember seeing on these bushes.

.

.

.

.

Manzanita bush in bloom

But then all those blossoms did something really strange. They turned into little apples all over the bushes.

Manzanita bush full of berries

I’ve never seen these bushes so covered before. You’d think my trails were one giant apple berry.

I’m going to have to figure out what to do with all these berries.

I wonder if they make good toys. Maybe I could play catch with them.

But once my person tosses them to me and I catch them – what if they don’t taste good. That could be a disaster.

Scratchy likes little roly things. Maybe I could take some of them home and roll them on the floor for him. That would probably occupy him for a whole minute or so. Then he’d probably want me to roll them around for him some more.

No, I guess that’s not a good idea either.

I wonder if my person could make something out of these berries? Are they edible?

They are?

If they’re edible there must be recipes for them. Get online person, and find some.

They don’t taste very good? What does that matter? If they’re edible you’ve got to eat them.

Not me. I don’t have to eat them. Berries aren’t dog food.

Okay, here it is. My person found the instructions for making Manzanita Cider. http://honest-food.net/2010/08/22/manzanita-cider/

Okay person, get busy and make that cider. The days are starting to get warm. You can put ice in the cider to cool off. I’ll just take the plain ice cubes.

What do you mean, you’re not going to make that cider yet?

You’re going to wait until those berries ripen?

You mean – oh no. That means I have to do another berry post later this summer. A sitting out and drinking cider kind of post.

Somehow I think my person tricked me into that one.

Scratchy, here’s some berries. Why don’t you roll them around on the floor for awhile.

Happy May Day!

Bongo and a Globe Mallow under a signToday is May Day, and even though we didn’t get much in the way of April showers we still got May flowers. I told my person I would do a flower post special for her for May Day.

See, I’m nice to her sometimes.

We get these orange flowers almost every spring and summer here, but for some reason last year they didn’t show up. I think they didn’t like our unseasonably late April snow dump. All we saw were one or two little orange blossoms all summer.

But this year they’re back out again, and I think even more of them are coming out to make up for last year. They’re called Globe Mallow.

Globe Mallow

This is what the plants look like.

Globe Mallow Blossoms

Here’s a sprig to put in your May Day basket.

But this next globe mallow really decided to outdo the others.

Globe Mallow on top of a Prickly Pear

It became a hat for this prickly pear cactus.

Oh yeah, I just remembered. Isn’t there supposed to be a May Pole or something?

Guess I’ll just wind my leash around my person. I don’t see any other poles around here. She’ll have to do.

Cactus Murderers

Bongo and some smashed up cactusYesterday I told you about all those police cars and sheriff’s vehicles that were parked right by my trails. I was afraid they were after my person, even though I didn’t know what she could have done wrong.

But after a little further investigation I believe I’ve discovered who all those police officers are after – or at least why they’re after them.

You see, I ran into a bunch of prickly pear cactus that was totally smashed up, demolished, and destroyed. And now I’m sure all those police officers are looking for the cactus murderers.

I thought maybe the gophers were guilty, because I found some gopher holes right next to that cactus.

Bongo checking a gopher hole near the destroyed cactus

But those gophers are much too little to do all that damage. They probably ran back down their holes and hid.

Then I thought maybe the javelina could have done this. But when javelina eat the prickly pear they leave teeth marks and they’re not usually into total cactus destruction. After all, that would be future dinners they’d be destroying

So I’m going to keep working on my investigation …

Bongo sniffing near the damaged prickly pear

and if those police officers don’t find the cactus murderers first, then when I find them I’m really going to give them what for.

Maybe I’ll cook up a batch of this mashed up cactus and feed it to them.

Oh, did I forget to take out the pricklers? My mistake.

I Didn’t Do It

Police Car in Parking LotAs I headed to my trails today I noticed that the parking lot was full of cars. This happens a lot on my trails but today those cars looked different than the cars I usually see.

Is that a police car?

At first I thought maybe some police officers were taking a break and decided to go for a hike.

But then I started looking around at all the other vehicles in the parking lot.

I saw Sheriff’s vehicles.

Sheriff Vehicle

Several of them.

I started getting worried.

I hadn’t done anything wrong so I thought maybe my person had and they were looking for her.

I thought maybe I shouldn’t take her on my trails after all.

My person insisted we go for a walk, but I worried the whole time. What would I do if those police officers and sheriff’s deputies found her and took her away?

I’d be out on my trails alone.

Alone? Hey, that might be fun. I could run free without having to take my person on a leash.

Oh, but wait a minute. Maybe those police officers are trying to trick me into running free so they can pick me up.

I think I’ll head back home now with my person – where it’s safe.

Bongo on the bed

I didn’t do anything officer. Truly I didn’t.

Mystery Bush

Bongo by a bushYou see this bush behind me? Well, I told my person she wasn’t allowed to post any pictures of it unless she found out what it was.

I figured I was safe. I knew she didn’t know the name of this bush and I figured she’d never find out. Unless she went out of her way to find a plant specialist to tell her, that is.

But I was wrong. That’s a really hard thing to be. After all, I’m Bongo – and Bongo is never wrong.

Except for this time.

My person got on the internet and looked at all kinds of plant pictures until she found it. The Sugar Sumac. That’s what it’s called. And now I have to let her post all her pictures.

We’ve been watching these bushes for a long time.

Way last winter they got these little pink buds all over them.

Sugar sumac in bud

But if you don’t believe these were like this way last winter I can prove it.

Sugar sumac with buds and snow

When the weather started getting warmer all the color faded out of those buds. We figured we’d seen the end of them.

Sugar sumac with buds that turned white

But then something extraordinary happened.

Well, maybe not so extraordinary but I wanted this to sound dramatic.

Sugar sumac blossom

Okay person, you got your way. Can you put the camera away now?

Bird Droppings

I’ve got another mystery going on. Right on my street this time. So I’ve put on my Detective Dog hat and I’m off to investigate.

Bongo with Detective Dog hat covering his eyesWhatever it is, it doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to leave, so I’ve got plenty of time for my investigation.

The man who walked by with his little dog seemed to be a bit concerned though. He told his dog to stay away from it and made a point of telling my person it was there.

I’m not sure why it isn’t leaving. These things usually don’t hang out when dogs start bothering them. I hardly ever even come across one.

Wait a minute. This thing isn’t moving at all. Does that mean it can’t move?

It can’t be dead because anything dead in the street is squashed flat. This is definitely not flat.

Maybe it’s playing dead, hoping it will be ignored.

I don’t think these guys are smart enough to do that though.

Maybe a bird accidently dropped it as it flew by.

That’s it! There’s some bird out there who knew I needed something to investigate so the bird dropped this right at the end of my driveway. Right where I would find it.

That bird must love me.
