Where Do the Snow Creatures Go?

Bongo Eating SnowThis morning my entire back yard had turned into a popsicle. It tasted so yummy. Forget the Frisbee. I think I’ll see how much of my yard I can eat. Frozen snow is the best. Nice and crunchy. Not as hard as ice cubes – but I like those too.

I wanted to eat my whole yard – all the snow in it, but my person had other ideas – as usual. She took me out on my trails though and another wish came true. My trails had turned to mud. The sides of my trails still had lots of snow, but gooey, mucky, squishy mud filled my trails. It felt so good to walk in. I’m not sure why, but my person kept trying to avoid the mud. She didn’t do a very good job.

We squished along for awhile and then I found something interesting. Just sitting there on top of a trail marker. A snowman and a snow worm. A couple days ago I found a strange creature buried in the snow. I wonder if the snow worm is one of its babies. I wish it would snow more often. I’m finding all kinds of creatures that I don’t normally see on my trails. I wonder where they go when the snow goes away.

Snowman and Snow Worm

I even found a creek that only comes out when it snows. I wanted to follow it and find out where it goes. Maybe I would find where the snow creatures go too. They must have a hidey hole they all go to when the snow goes away.

Bongo in the Creek

My person wouldn’t let me follow the creek. Something about getting her boots wet. C’mon person. First you complain about the mud. Now you don’t want to wash it off.

People! If I don’t get mine trained right I’m never going to find that hidey hole.

Snow Changes

Bongo in the snowWe got more snow overnight and then the sun came out in the afternoon. Time for more adventures!

The sun made the snow start melting so there were all kinds of puddles and streams on my trails. I walked through the middle of every puddle. It was great fun.

I found some kind of strange spiny creature hibernating in the snow. I’ve never seen this creature before. I hope it’s still there when the snow melts. I want to see what the rest of it looks like.

Spiny Snow Creature

My pond didn’t have any water in it a couple days ago. Now it’s a true mud puddle. It even has red water. I’d better get my Detective Dog hat on and find out where this water is coming from.

Hey, where did this water come from? It’s running down the rock.

We even found a virgin trail and got to put the first footprints in the snow.

Bongo on virgin snow

Hey person, I bet tomorrow we’ll be able to find some really good virgin mud.

How to Walk in Snow

Bongo with a Frisbee in the SnowI don’t believe it! My person let me outside Sunday morning and there was snow everywhere. And not just a little bit of that white stuff. There was bunches. Perfect for dragging my Frisbee through. It slides really well in snow. This new Frisbee I have slides so well that sometimes it slips away from me and I have to find it.

Bongo in the Snow

If you look really close you can see my Frisbee flying behind me.

After I’d had enough of the Frisbee games, I decided it was time to take my person for a walk. I’m not sure taking my person for a walk in the snow was such a good idea though.

She kept making me stop so she could take pictures, and even when she wasn’t taking pictures she wouldn’t go fast enough.

Bongo in the trail in the snow

Hurry up, person.

Frozen Pricklers

I kept finding all kinds of really great smells in the bushes and every time I tried to go find where the smell came from my person yanked me back to the trails. Besides, every time she took a step her feet made such a loud crunching sound in the snow that all the critters probably heard her coming and ran for it.

Bongo at the Stream

I didn't know there was a stream here.

Then, guess what? I found a dead mouse sitting right on top of the snow. I picked it up and started to chomp on it. And you know what my person did. She made me drop it. I tried to ignore her but she wouldn’t give up. I figured if I dropped it for a minute she’d be happy and I could go pick it up again. But no. She wouldn’t let me get back near it. I can’t figure out why she would want to waste a good tasty morsel like that.

Bongo and Mouse in the Snow

I’d had about enough after that. I took my person home. And if she keeps spoiling my fun in the snow I’m leaving her home next time.

Junk Yard Dog

Junk Yard DogYippee! My person is home. I got to play Frisbee and go on my trails and my person even fixed my squeaky bear. I pulled the squeaker out of it while she was gone. Now it squeaks again.

My person says I’m famous in Indiana. Lots of her friends know about me and asked about me. And most of her friends don’t even live in Indiana, so I’m famous all over.

What, person? Don’t let it what? What about my head? How many people have a famous dog? I think you should be proud of me.

You did what while you were gone, person? You missed being around me so much that you found another dog to take pictures of? Who do you think you are, Laurie Bartolo or something? That’s what she does. My friend Laurie finds dogs to take pictures of. You’re only supposed to take pictures of me.

I don’t care if I wasn’t there. Next time you’ll have to bring me along.

You found a what? A junk yard dog? I could be a junk yard dog. Just give me a junk yard to play in. Better yet, I’ll take all my chewed up toys out in our back yard. Then I’ll be a junk yard dog too.

Save the Donkey

The Prophet Balaam and the Ass, by Rembrandt v...

A donkey did what? No way!

Okay person, I’ll tell this story without skipping over parts. I just can’t get over that donkey. I want to talk about the donkey.

Okay, I’ll wait. My person says when the Israelites were following Moses, the King of Moab became afraid of them. He thought they were going to wipe out his country. So he sent messengers to a diviner named Balaam to come and put a curse on them. But God told Balaam not to put a curse on the Israelites because they were blessed. Am I blessed person? I think I should be blessed too.

Okay, I’ll go back to the story. So Balaam said he couldn’t go with those messengers.

Those messengers went back to the king and told him Balaam wouldn’t come, so what did that king do? He sent even more messengers and told Balaam he would reward him handsomely. This time God told him to go, but to only do what He told him to do.

Hey person. Do you think Balaam wanted the money more than he wanted to do what God said? Because I think God knew Balaam was up to something. Was he up to no good?

Because God sent an angel to block his way. And the angel had his sword drawn.

Well, Balaam couldn’t see the angel but his donkey could. His donkey turned off the road and Balaam beat her. That poor donkey. All she was trying to do was save Balaam.

After that the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path. The donkey pressed close to a wall and crushed Balaam’s foot. So he beat her again. I think I’m going to give Balaam what for.

Then that angel moved to a place where there was no way around so that donkey laid down under Balaam. And Balaam beat her with his staff.

Then God made the donkey so she could talk. This is so cool! That donkey asked Balaam why he was beating her.

Balaam actually answered his donkey and said if he’d had a sword he would kill her for making a fool of him.

The donkey asked the mean old Balaam if she hadn’t been a good donkey that didn’t normally act this way.

Balaam agreed this was not the way the donkey normally acted, and then the Lord let him see the angel. That angel gave Balaam what for and told him if his donkey hadn’t saved him he would have killed Balaam, but not the donkey.

I think Balaam got off lucky. That donkey and angel should have given him a really good talking to and then given him what for some more.

Hey person, if I let you ride on me do you think an angel would show up and teach me to talk?

I’m Abstract

Bongo AbstractSome of my blogging friends like Katie and Jennifer like to do abstract photography sometimes. Since my person made me do I’m doing an art blog this week I thought I would try my hand at abstract photography. I had to do it a little differently than my friends do, since I have trouble holding the camera.

I made my person hold the camera and I did the moving. What do you think? Is that a great photo of me, or what?

I think I should get my person to blow it up and hang it on the wall. After all, some of her stuff is on the wall. I think mine should be too.

Or, wait a minute – I have an even better idea. I could get my person to make a bunch of prints and I could sell them. I could be rich. I’m sure everyone would want one of these.

Hey person, who’s Rich? Is he one of your friends? I think I just want to keep being Bongo.

Thunder Mountain

Painting of Thunder MountainFinally, here’s a painting that I was a part of. I tried to talk my person into painting me into it, but she would have nothing to do with that. She said the painting was a present and people usually only like paintings of their own dogs.

I thought everyone would want a painting of me.

Anyway, I was with my person when she took the picture that she did the painting from. We were on a really long walk that day – so this painting is from my trails, but further away than we usually go.

We have a good view of Thunder Mountain from the trailhead near my house, but this painting is from a different side of it.

When my person gets back home I’m telling her we need to go back there. Maybe I can help her do another painting of this mountain. Or maybe we can go to a different side of the mountain – one I haven’t seen before.

Hey person, I hope you don’t have anything to do when you get back home, because I have all kinds of plans for you.

How Plain is Your Air?

Painting of Coffee Pot RockMy person might not have any paintings of dogs, but at least this one is a view from my trails. I was kind of mad at my person when she painted it though.

You know what she did? She put all her paints and brushes and stuff in a back pack and headed out to the trails without me. She made some excuse that her art teacher said she had to do a plein air painting.

Come on, person. I don’t care if the air is plain or not. I still want to go with you. You can paint while I’m with you. If I get bored I’ll just chase squirrels or coyotes or something.

Well, nothing I said would convince her to take me with her. She finally came back a couple hours later with this painting.

At least she took me out on my trails after that, but we didn’t stay out as long as she stayed out there by herself. I think she should buy me my own paints. Then we could go out and paint in the plain air together. I wouldn’t even mind painting with rain in the air.

Horses at Church

Painting of Horses on the ReservationMore horses person? Don’t you ever do paintings of dogs? What about painting one of me? I’m famous you know.

What? You’re no good at drawing dogs? Well, you’d better get some practice in person. I want a dog picture.

Okay, I’ll tell them about this picture. My person goes to this place where the horses are and leaves me behind. Usually I have to stay home with my younger person. I wish she’d take me along.

But person, you said there are horses and cows and lots of dogs running around where you go. Why can’t I go running around with all those dogs? I know those dogs would like me.

What? I wouldn’t be allowed to sleep inside with you? And you’re afraid I’d run after the coyotes? Coyotes are dogs, aren’t they? So what’s wrong with running after them?

Okay person, I’ll tell them where you go. These horses were outside of a church that my person sometimes visits to help the people out. She says that most of the time there are more animals around that church than people. It’s out in the middle of nowhere on the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona.

Hey, we live in Northern Arizona, person. Are we in the middle of nowhere?

My person says this church is way more isolated than we are. There are lots of dirt roads that you have to drive on to get there and there are no street signs so you have to go with someone who knows the way. At the church there is no running water and you have to go about a mile away to get it. The horses and cows go there to drink too. Can I go there to drink, person? What about those dogs? Do they drink there?

My person says the church has no electricity either and they have to use a generator. But she says what they do have are some great people and lots of them have become her friends.

Okay, there’s something I don’t get though. My person didn’t go there this week, but she says she is with some people who have been there with her. Okay person – who are you really with? And what are you doing? If you can’t come straight with me you’d better come home.

Left Behind Again

Drawing of Horse at Monument ValleyMy person went off again, and she took her laptop with her. My younger person won’t let me use his. How am I supposed to write my blog?

What? I’m writing it? What do you mean? I can’t write it. I don’t have a computer.

Oh yeah. My person wants me to tell you she helped me plan ahead. She knew she wasn’t going to leave her computer with me because she wanted to take it with her. And I can’t write about my adventures with my younger person before I’ve had them, so we’re doing something different.

A long time ago my friend Rumpy asked if I would let my person post some of her art work, so I thought I would be nice to her and let her do some of that this week. I’m being picky though. I told her she could do animals, or stuff we’ve seen on my walks. That’s it.

So what does my person do? She doesn’t even have any dog pictures, so she gave me one of a horse.

Yeah, I’ll tell them person. She says she was in Monument Valley a long time ago – before she got me – and took a photo that she really liked, so she finally decided to draw it. Monument Valley is on the Navajo Reservation near the border of Arizona and Utah. She says this horse had Navajo blankets and tassels on it.

Hey person, I could use a comfy Navajo blanket to lie on while I’m waiting for you to come back home.
