Blocked Trail

Bongo and a downed century plantWhat is going on here?

Somebody is trying to put a roadblock across my trails.

I hope they understand that these are my trails and nobody is allowed to block them up.

What is this thing, anyway?

.

.

.

Century plant laying across the trail

Oh, now I see.

What we have here is a mischievous century plant.

A century plant that decided to lay down on the job.

Well, century plant – I don’t care if you do want to drop your seed pods all in one spot.

And I don’t care if you’re tired of standing and want to lie down.

Don’t do it across my trails!

There’s plenty of room if you just lie down heading the other way – and you won’t be blocking anybody’s path.

Bongo's path blocked by the downed century plant

This century plant is so stubborn. It’s not listening to me at all.

What am I going to do?

Bongo's leash wrapped around the century plant as he goes under it

I guess going under this thing will work as well as anything.

What’s a Deer?

Bongo pawing the groundWhat’s a deer?

My person and I met someone coming off my trails, and she said she’d seen a deer.

I’ve never ever seen a deer. Never in my life.

Deer don’t hang out on my trails.

If they did I’m sure I would have found one.

So what was that deer doing here?

I’ve got to go find that deer.

But how would I recognize it if I saw it?

Maybe by the smell – because it would be the only new smell on my trails.

So let’s go person. That deer’s got to be around here somewhere.

                                                 ***

I looked all over for that deer.

I pawed the ground and everything, but nothing would bring that deer around.

And then you know what happened?

My person and my younger person left the house and drove away.

Without me, mind you.

It was dark when they came back home, and you know what they told me?

They drove right by that deer. It was right by the side of the road.

And I’ve still never seen a deer.

But from what I’ve heard about what a deer looks like…

Bongo with antlers

I imagine it might look kind of like this.

Julie

Julie and Bongo sniffing nosesWoo woo! I’ve got a new girlfriend. Her name is Julie and she loves to play with me.

Julie makes me feel like a puppy again.

Oh. Oops. Just a minute.

Collies, if you’re reading this can you distract Ginger so she doesn’t see this?

Maybe you can get a new hammock for Ginger your dad or something.

Whew! That’s taken care of. I wouldn’t want to upset Ginger.

Now where was I?

Oh yeah.

Julie has come up to me two different times on my trails and wants me to chase her.

I’m still trying to convince my person that she’ll be fine if she lets go of my leash for awhile, but I guess she still needs to hold on. Some kind of insecurity or something.

But Julie is cool. She didn’t go farther than my leash could reach.

And then – this is so romantic.

Julie and Bongo sniffing spots near each other

We stood near each other sniffing little patches of ground.

And before I knew it…

Julie and Bongo sniffing the same spot

we were sniffing the same piece of ground.

I can’t wait to go out on my trails again tomorrow.

But this time I need to come up with a plan to ditch my person.

Maybe I’ll give her two leashes – so when I take off after Julie she still has one to hold on to.

Pulling Mischief

Bongo and his younger person on the trailMy younger person has been home for the last few days and he let me take him for a walk.

I got really excited because I don’t get to go on walks with him very often.

But we got out a little ways on my trails and I sensed something.

There’s a storm brewing somewhere.

.

.

lit up clouds

You see it?

Oh. Well, maybe not in that direction.

It must be over here.

cloudy sky over Chinmey Rock

I know there’s a storm somewhere.

Maybe we just can’t see it yet.

I decided we shouldn’t go any further.

And you know what my younger person did?

Bongo being dragged by his collar

He pulled mischief on me and started dragging me along.

Do you believe it?

I guess walking is better than getting dragged.

Bongo and his younger person walking on the trail again

So I walked for awhile.

But then I’d had it.

I know that storm is somewhere around here.

I’m not taking a chance.

Bongo pulling against the leash

I’m not going any further.

Bongo giving even more resistance to the leash

Seriously. I mean it.

Bongo sitting at the end of the leash

Two can play at this game.

Younger person shortening the leash while Bongo still sits

So who’s the best mischief maker now?

Houses Under Construction

Bongo, red rocks and a house being added on toThis is so cool! My friends the Collies, including my girlfriend Ginger, congratulated me on their blog for celebrating my 2nd Blogiversary. I love having such great blogging friends. And Ginger is my bestest girlfriend.

Note to all my other girlfriends: Ginger is headed toward World Domination so I have to make sure I stay on her good side.

Note to Collies: Please don’t let Ginger read my last comment.

Note to girlfriends: I meant girlfriend. It’s you, and you alone that I love.

Now that I’m finished with all my notes I’ve got to tell you about someone else that loves me.

The other day I explored a new part of my trails and discovered a stone house that someone had been building for me.

I got really excited when I found that house, but there is one problem. I haven’t been able to find the builder and the house isn’t finished.

There’s no roof on it.

But today I discovered another house that someone is building for me.

Bongo looking toward house under construction

I wasn’t even exploring this time. I was taking my person for a walk on our usual trails and there it was.

Where it hadn’t been before.

I told my person we had to get closer. I needed a better look.

When I finally got a better look I was so disappointed.

What is wrong with the builders around here?

I can’t believe this is happening to me.

Two houses are being built for me…

House addition under construction

and this one doesn’t have a roof on it either.

Ant Hole Competition

Bongo's faceNormally the ants around here aren’t much to look at. They crawl out of holes in the ground, go get stuff to eat, and then crawl back in.

There are different colors and sizes of ants, but usually the most important thing to know about ants is that some of them bite.

Don’t get close enough to tempt the ants to crawl on you.

But something changes when it rains around here. The ants get really creative.

They seem to be in competition to see which group of ants can build the best entrance to their house.

I thought I’d post some of the entries so you can decide which one is your favorite.

Tall, skinny ant hole entrance

I think these ants were trying to see how tall they could get their entrance.

Tall, skinny ant hole entrance with an extra opening on the side

But for those ants who might not be able to climb quite so high to get in, these ants created a side door.

ant hole entrance with a circle around it

Here we have a moat around the entrance. All ready to fill with water. These ants might have cheated though. I’m not sure they created that moat all by themselves.

Funnel shaped ant hole entrance

Now this is getting creative. A funnel entrance. The ants must have to walk in ever descending circles to enter this house.

Ant hole entrance with a long slot

If the ants ever drag home a giant key they’ll be able to get in here.

Ant hole entrance partly on a rock

And if you want to be a little different you can change up the color and rest your entrance against a rock.

Maybe I ought to taste this one. It looks like they mixed sugar into the dirt.

Two tall, skinny ant holes near each other

These ants weren’t taking any chances. If they miss the first entrance, the second one will work for sure.

Overlapping ant hole entrances

But this one has got to be my all time favorite.

The pig snout entrance.

ant trying to push a juniper berry

I wonder if this little guy gets extra points if he can drop this juniper berry down the most difficult hole.

New Expedition

View in a wash in SedonaToday I got to go on a new adventure. I got to go exploring.

I can’t believe we’ve never been here before. It’s my wash, after all.

But it’s the other part of my wash.

When we get to this place in my trails we usually go left and head back home. To explore this part we have to go right.

Finally I talked my person into going right for a change.

And we were off – on a new expedition.

Bongo exploring a dry wash

At first I had a good time checking out all the new smells in this wash.

But then I saw something really strange.

A barkless tree.

Barkless tree

It’s a good thing this tree is not a dog. It would have a terrible time giving warnings in dog talk.

We headed up past that tree and kept on going.

And then I saw it.

Something I’ve never seen on my trails before.

I think somebody has been expecting me because…

Bongo by a stone wall

they started building me a house.

Whoever is building it must be coming back because they haven’t finished with it.

The walls are almost high enough for me, but the house still needs a roof.

I looked to see if I could see anyone around.

Bongo in front of stone structure

I don’t see anybody this way.

Bongo looking opposite direction in front of stone structure

Nobody over this direction either.

The house builder doesn’t seem to be around anywhere.

Bongo looking at stone structure

Guess I’ll go inspect the place.

As long as there’s no rain I can wait for the roof.

Mischief!

Bongo not movingI’ve got a complaint, and I should have posted this for Monday Mischief, but when someone pulls mischief on me, I’ve got to post it when it happens.

You see, my person tried to tell me everything was fine outside. I knew it wasn’t but she made me go.

My neighbor across the street was in on it too. He said there wasn’t any thunder.

But I knew it was coming. The wind was blowing, the clouds were dark, and I knew I would hear that awful noise any minute.

It even started raining. I swear I felt a drop or two.

I took my person into my wash because it seemed like the safest place.

But then it happened. The wind picked up and I heard a rumbly in the sky. Not loud, but it still meant business in my book.

Bongo trying to climb the rocks

I tried to get my person to head the safest direction, but for some reason she wouldn’t go for it.

More mischief on her part, I’m sure.

Since my person wouldn’t go up that hill there was only one direction to head – and it led straight to my toadies.

And you know what my person did?

She pulled more mischief on me!

Bongo tied to a dead tree

She tied me to a tree.

Bongo tied to and tangled on a tree

She tried to tell me it was so I wouldn’t trample the toadies.

Bongo looking down from the tree he's tied to

I’ll trample those toadies alright.

They’re pulling mischief on me too.

They took my puddle.

Tiny toads in mud

There were little toadies hopping around everywhere that my puddle used to be.

They seemed to be settling in.

Toads in a mud hut

They even had little toad houses.

This mischief has gone far enough.

I’m having it out with those toadies right now.

Those toadies are going to have to move and give me back my puddle.

Time for a New Hat

Bongo wearing a hat full of branchesI’m putting on a new hat today. This is my Nature Dog Hat so I can tell you about nature on my trails. But this post comes with a warning.

Warning: This post is about spiders and insects. If you’re squeamish (what’s that word?) don’t scroll down to the picture at the end.

.

.

.

.

.

It’s really hard to get a picture of these bugs, but we found one walking along on the ground – right in my yard.

Tarantula Hawk

Normally they buzz right by us. Buzzing is right. They make a loud buzz when they fly by, and you get a glimpse of black and orange. Maybe they should be called Halloween bugs. Those are the official Halloween colors, aren’t they?

Once you hear what these bugs do, you’ll realize they fit right into that holiday. These bugs are mean.

They’re called tarantula hawks. They like tarantulas, but the feeling isn’t mutual.

You see, these hawk things – which are really wasps, look for tarantulas and when they find one they poke it with their stinger.

That tarantula plops over as if it’s dead, but it’s really only paralyzed.

Then that nasty tarantula hawk lays one single egg on the tarantula and buries the tarantula. When the egg hatches that nasty baby eats the tarantula, while keeping it alive as long as possible by saving the vital organs for dessert.

Then it flies away to do the same thing all over again with another poor, unsuspecting tarantula.

The tarantulas are starting to come out now. My person just saw the first one of the season.

Tarantula

Watch out, tarantula! Those tarantula hawks are looking for you.

Mysterious Hole

Bongo checking out a hole in the groundSince we’ve gotten lots of rain here, the ground on my trails which is usually hard as rocks, has softened up.

It’s become so soft that somebody decided to dig a big hole – right next to my trail.

This hole was awfully close to some cactus so I thought I’d better investigate to see who might have done such a thing.

A few sniffs here – and a few sniffs there.

Hmmm. There are so many smells around here. It’s hard to figure who might have dug this.

What? Huh? What are you saying, person?

You think I dug this hole?

Bongo with a suspecting look

Where would you possibly have come up with an idea like that?

I’ve been dragging you around on this leash. I haven’t been out of your sight for a minute.

I don’t know when you think I would have had a chance to dig this without you seeing me.

Besides, I’m not much of a digger.

I bet you can’t even think of the last time you saw me digging a hole.

Bongo digging in the yard

Oh. Well, that was an exception.

That Frisbee was brand new and I really needed to bury it.
