Not Alone

Bongo on the trailIt was a nice, quiet day on my trails and I was enjoying having them all to myself when my person had to tell me we weren’t really alone out here.

I looked all around and I didn’t see any people or any dogs so I don’t know what she was talking about.

My person told me to look some more.

I think she’s nuts. There’s no one else here.

Hey person, I’m done looking. There’s no one here. I need to get on with my sniffing to find out who was here.

Well, check this out. Look at the little guy in this cactus flower.

Bee in a hedgehog cactus flower

And here’s another one. Trying to bury itself.

Bee in a prickly pear cactus flower

How do you expect me to notice these guys if they bury themselves inside the flowers?

***

Or this guy?

Beetle in a hole in the ground

This guy really is trying to hide. He found his own hidey hole.

Red and black beetle

At least this one is out in the open. I think he wants to show off. I’ve never seen one like him before.

***

Oh, look now. Even the ants are getting into the act.

Blossoms and an ant on a leaf

What am I supposed to do person? These are my trails. But look how many insects there are. I’m afraid they’re going to take over.

It’s useless trying to get rid of them. They’re everywhere.

This is really depressing.

I might as well be chasing butterflies.

Trekking with Toby

Toby and Bongo on the TrailWhat perfect timing!

Today when I headed out my front door to go for a walk on my trails Toby, my neighbor dog was heading out his front door too. To go for a walk on my trails.

Toby’s my friend so I always let him use my trails, but we don’t often use them at the same time. Today would be a special treat.

Toby always smells really good so I give him a few sniffs every time we meet.

.

Bongo and Toby

Then off we headed to the trails.

We were walking along enjoying each other’s company and checking out a smell or two, when I looked back (I’m usually in the lead) and Toby was going the wrong way.

Toby was taking the trail that headed back home!

Toby, wait! We’ve barely gotten started.

Come back Toby! There are more trails to explore. More adventures to be had.

More smells to sniff.

Toby missed it all. I had to trek on the trails without him.

And what’s more disappointing is that I had hoped he could help me with my Detective Dog work – you know, kind of like Dr. Watson was to Sherlock Holmes.

Because I’ve got another mystery to solve.

I’ve got to figure out what this giant asparagus is doing poking out of this spiky ball.

Yucca with a shoot coming out

Maybe I should go bark at Toby’s door.

The Empty Trail

Bongo in an empty parking lotYesterday I posted about my hike in West Fork. It was so much fun. There were lots of people and dogs on the trail. And shade. It was nice and cool there.

Today I went back to my own trails.

Empty.

The parking lot was empty.

The trails were empty.

The only ones on my trails were me, my person, and a few birds.

I didn’t even see any lizards.

Bongo on an empty trail

I think everybody went to West Fork and stayed there.

Maybe I should go back there too.

I miss all the people and dogs. It was cool and shady there. And there was water.

But wait a minute. I just thought of something.

These are my trails, and I’ve finally got them all to myself.

I don’t have to tell any other dogs whose trails these are.

I don’t have to worry about people who might not want to give me loves.

I don’t even have to stand aside while people – and dogs – come walking past me.

I think I’ll put a sign on my trails. “Bongo’s Trails – Go to West Fork.”

I won’t leave that sign up forever though.

Because I want to go back to West Fork again. I’ll take that sign down then.

West Fork

Bongo with his nose out the car windowOver the weekend I got in the car with my people and we started going somewhere I’ve never been before. My people said it was a place called Oak Creek Canyon. All I know is that the smells there were a lot different than the smells on my trails.

I sure hope this isn’t a new route to the dog hotel.

The car stopped and when I got out I didn’t see a dog hotel anywhere in sight.

Whew! I can relax now.

We walked a little ways and then I found it. It’s a trail sign and it says West Fork.

Bongo and a trail sign

This is where I told my people to go. My friend Lola and her person Shary said it’s the best trail ever, and my people have never taken me here before. That’s okay, because now I can take them here.

Hey, check this out! It’s a bridge – and there’s water down there.

Bongo and his younger person walking across a bridge

Now I’ve got to figure out how to get to that water.

Bongo and his younger person walking on a trail

This trail is nice, but I’ve seen lots of little trails that lead to the water. How come we’re not taking one of them?

Bongo in a narrow stream of water

Finally! The water!

Hey, this is like a Slip N Slide.

Bongo going downstream

Here I go!

Bongo in the water

You want to do what?

I just got here and I’m not coming out.

***

My people finally convinced me that there were more trails and more water to swim in and they were right.

Creek, red cliff, and trees

My person even found flowers to take pictures of.

White Flower

I think my person is a flower magnet.

***

Finally! I got to go swimming again.

Bongo all wet

I’m just getting out for a minute.

Bongo looking away from the creek

You want to go where?

I don’t think so. I’m not done swimming yet.

***

I was forced to leave the water and head back to the car, but I’ve got a plan.

Bongo with his leash tangled around the sign post

See if my people can get me to leave this place now.

Don’t Steal My Blog

Lizard on the rock in the shadeI think somebody is trying to take over my trails. And steal my blog. And become the center of attention.

How dare this creature pose for the main picture in my blog post? That spot should always be reserved for me.

At least that creature is small. Maybe all anyone sees is a rock and a bunch of branches. Maybe that little thing blends in with the background.

***

Now that the weather is getting warmer, lizards have been scurrying around on my trails.

I don’t even bother trying to chase them. They run right off and hide before I even get near.

We have the wimpiest creatures on my trails. The only ones willing to get near me are my dog friends – and the people, of course.

All the creatures that live on my trails run off at the mere thought that someone might be coming too close. Even the birds fly off when we get near – as if we could ever catch them up a tree.

Maybe I should bring Scratchy on my trails with me. He could climb up the tree after those birds and then when they fly off he’d be stuck there.

Hey, great idea. Why didn’t I think of that before?

But where was I going with this?

Oh yes, that lizard.

It’s a good thing he does run off so easily.

He’s going to have a hard time taking over my blog if he’s running off to hide in the bushes.

Now to go get Scratchy.

Mystery Bags

Bongo sniffing near a little black bagWhen I’m sniffing around on my trails looking for clues to my latest mystery, or just looking for new and interesting sniffs, I sometimes run across little black bags.

These bags aren’t very interesting in themselves except for the fact that I usually never see the same one twice.

Most of the time when I come back the same way the bag is missing. There might be another bag in a different location, but that first bag is hardly ever there anymore.

I gave up trying to solve this mystery eons ago. There’s nothing special about these bags and they just don’t interest me enough.

There might be something inside these bags, but the smell doesn’t come through and I’d much rather solve mysteries with more aromatic clues.

But today, while I was sniffing the territory and looking for some clues that might lead me to a new mystery I passed another of those little black bags.

I was about to walk right by it when…

Bongo near a bag with something on it

I had to do a double take.

Hearts on and around a little black bag

Apparently somebody thought this particular bag was special.

Road Trip

Where are we Going? My younger person is home from school this week and today he and my person told me to get in the car with them. I like jumping in the car but I always get a little nervous about where I might be jumping back out.

We headed down the street and we made a turn. Well, this isn’t the way to the vet. I like the vet. They give me loves and treats there.

And then I got really worried. This is the way to the dog hotel! I don’t like going to the dog hotel. Maybe we should turn around and go back home.

But we kept going. Hey, wait a minute! We don’t ride this far in the car when we go to the dog hotel. Where are we going?

We rode and rode, and finally my person stopped the car. And there was no vet and there was no dog hotel. We were in a big parking lot.

And then we crossed the street.

Fay Canyon Trail Sign

A brand new trail! I hope my people brought lots of water because there are an awful lot of bushes that I need to leave messages on.

After my people assured me we had lots of water with us we headed up the trail.

Bongo and his younger person walking on the trail

We walked for a ways through lots of trees and then we climbed some rocks – and look what I saw!

My younger person went exploring some more, so I thought I might too.

Bongo looking up the trail

But before I could get very far my younger person came back.

I could sit here forever.

What? It’s time to go back.

I sure hope there’s some treats at the end of this trip.

Cactus Murderers

Bongo and some smashed up cactusYesterday I told you about all those police cars and sheriff’s vehicles that were parked right by my trails. I was afraid they were after my person, even though I didn’t know what she could have done wrong.

But after a little further investigation I believe I’ve discovered who all those police officers are after – or at least why they’re after them.

You see, I ran into a bunch of prickly pear cactus that was totally smashed up, demolished, and destroyed. And now I’m sure all those police officers are looking for the cactus murderers.

I thought maybe the gophers were guilty, because I found some gopher holes right next to that cactus.

Bongo checking a gopher hole near the destroyed cactus

But those gophers are much too little to do all that damage. They probably ran back down their holes and hid.

Then I thought maybe the javelina could have done this. But when javelina eat the prickly pear they leave teeth marks and they’re not usually into total cactus destruction. After all, that would be future dinners they’d be destroying

So I’m going to keep working on my investigation …

Bongo sniffing near the damaged prickly pear

and if those police officers don’t find the cactus murderers first, then when I find them I’m really going to give them what for.

Maybe I’ll cook up a batch of this mashed up cactus and feed it to them.

Oh, did I forget to take out the pricklers? My mistake.

I Didn’t Do It

Police Car in Parking LotAs I headed to my trails today I noticed that the parking lot was full of cars. This happens a lot on my trails but today those cars looked different than the cars I usually see.

Is that a police car?

At first I thought maybe some police officers were taking a break and decided to go for a hike.

But then I started looking around at all the other vehicles in the parking lot.

I saw Sheriff’s vehicles.

Sheriff Vehicle

Several of them.

I started getting worried.

I hadn’t done anything wrong so I thought maybe my person had and they were looking for her.

I thought maybe I shouldn’t take her on my trails after all.

My person insisted we go for a walk, but I worried the whole time. What would I do if those police officers and sheriff’s deputies found her and took her away?

I’d be out on my trails alone.

Alone? Hey, that might be fun. I could run free without having to take my person on a leash.

Oh, but wait a minute. Maybe those police officers are trying to trick me into running free so they can pick me up.

I think I’ll head back home now with my person – where it’s safe.

Bongo on the bed

I didn’t do anything officer. Truly I didn’t.

The Centuries are Here

Bongo and a century plantLast year I had to go hunting for century plants. There was only one near my regular trails and we didn’t even notice it until it was big and blooming because it was hiding in the trees. That was okay though because I got to take my person on extra long walks to go find century plants.

But I might not get those long walks this year. The centuries are here.

We found one right near my trail and we’ve been watching it grow taller every day. That plant must have been eating its Wheaties because it sure can grow fast.

After watching my century plant get taller for a few days I found another one. Hiding behind a bush.

.

.

Bongo in front of a century plant

That second century is going to have to get a bigger bush soon though. It’s growing out of the one it’s got real fast.

After we found the bush century plant I took my person on my other trail – the one we usually go back to our house on. And there it was!

Bongo in front of a newly sprouting century plant

Are three centuries a charm?

If they’re not, maybe another century will start up on my trails real soon.

But now I’m getting confused.

What year is this?
