About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

Bored

Pink prickly pear cactus flowerI’m getting really bored at the dog hotel. All I can find to post is this prickly pear picture.

The prickly pear didn’t have many flowers this year, so I really had to look hard to find one.

I sure hope my person comes and gets me out of here soon.

I need to have more adventures.

Texting on the Trail

A cell phone and Bongo looking boredDo you see something wrong with this picture? Cause I sure do.

It’s hot out today. Really hot.

So what does my person do?

She dilly dallies on our walk because she’s texting.

Come on, person. I like my walks, but when it’s this hot out I just want to travel the trails and get back home where it’s cool inside.

But my person was really bad today because when she wasn’t texting she was taking pictures of really dumb things.

Fuzzy Caterpillar

Like caterpillars.

I don’t know what this caterpillar is doing in the middle of my trails anyway. Maybe turning itself into a tasty treat.

I’ve never tried fried caterpillars before.

That caterpillar didn’t look done yet, so my person found even more dumb things to take pictures of.

Red Berries

Berries.

And I don’t think these berries are good for eating – even if they are cooked.

And by this time I’m just dragging.

I’m dying of thirst.

I think I’m going to drop any second now.

Bongo looking too hot

Did I do it?

Did I make you feel sorry enough for me?

I hope so, because somebody’s got to call the animal abuse people and turn my person in.

And while I’m waiting for those animal abuse people to show up I think I’ll go home to my air conditioned house and get a nice cool drink of water.

You can tell those people to look for me and my person there.

I’ll be home in about a minute.

The Bone is Back

Bongo found his bone from yesterdayHey person, you know that bone I found? The one you made me drop yesterday?

Well it’s still here.

This is one stroke of luck.

.

.

.

.

Bongo picking up his bone

I think I’d better bury this thing again before somebody else finds it.

Bongo digging a hole

Okay bone. You’ll be safe in here.

Bongo about to bury the bone in the hole

This is really hard work covering up this bone.

I wish I had a shovel so I didn’t have to use my nose.

Bongo covering the bone up

Person, what do you mean we have to go now?

I worked really hard to bury that bone. I’ve got to dig it up now and make sure it’s safe.

I don’t want to go yet. I’m not done digging.

You’re going to make all that work I did go to waste.

I bet there’s nobody that works harder than I just did, and you’re going to turn it into a waste.

Ant dragging a large tuft of hair

What’s that ant doing carrying that tail around with him?

Working harder than me?

No way.

I carry my tail around with me all the time. It’s no work at all.

Bury the Bone

Bongo burying a boneA couple days ago I found a bone on my trails.

And my person said, “Drop it.”

So today when I found that bone again I decided to bury it.

I dug a hole under a tree…

.

.

.

Bongo putting the bone in the ground

and I dropped it in.

Then I buried it.

I don’t have a shovel…

Bongo covering the bone with his nose

so I buried it with my nose.

It was hard work, but I got that bone covered up.

Bongo checking to see if the bone is still there

But now I can’t see that bone anymore. And I can’t smell it as well, either.

I’d better dig it up and make sure it’s still there.

Bongo found the bone still in the hole

Yup, it’s here.

Guess I’d better take it and put it in a safe place.

Bongo with the bone in his mouth

What? Drop it?

What do you mean, drop it?

Bongo looking at the bone on the ground

I worked hard for this bone, person.

I dropped it, but I’m holding you responsible if anything happens to it.

Take up your Cross

English: Christ Handing the Keys to St. Peter ...

English: Christ Handing the Keys to St. Peter by Pietro Perugino (1481-82) Fresco, 335 x 550 cm Cappella Sistina, Vatican. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Hey person, I don’t know if I like this next Bible story. Can’t you just tell another one about swimming – or fishing?

Okay, I’ll listen to the story. But if there’s no fish in it I want some treats when you’re finished.

***

Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am?”

***

I know who he is. He’s the guy who makes lots of fish appear.

Yes, I’m listening.

***

The disciples replied to Jesus, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

***

God must really love us to send His Son to give us lots of fish.

I am listening, but don’t you think that was a really important observation I just made?

***

Jesus told Peter he was blessed because it was the Father in heaven who revealed to him who Jesus is, and He told His disciples not to tell anyone that He is the Christ.

Then He began to explain to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and teachers of the law, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

***

Wouldn’t the disciples protect Jesus?

***

Peter had that idea and he began to rebuke Jesus saying, “Never, Lord. This shall never happen to you!”

***

I bet Jesus felt better after that.

***

This is what Jesus said to Peter. “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

***

I bet Peter tucked his tail between his legs after that.

***

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”

***

If I have to deny myself to follow Jesus, does that mean I have to give up treats?

After a Rain

Bongo trying to go down another trailEarlier today we had a bunch of thunder and some rain, but things had calmed down.

So my person and I decided to go for a walk.

Because of the rain everything smelled fresh and good, and the rain and clouds had cooled the air.

Rather than sweltering in the heat like we’ve been doing the last few days, it felt refreshing out in the cooler temperature.

This was turning into one of the best walks I’ve been on in a long time.

But then it happened.

First it was just a few drops of rain.

I can handle that.

But then I saw it.

A big flash of lightning.

And you know what comes after that.

Thunder!

I hate thunder. I’m deathly afraid of it.

Fortunately we were right at the beginning of a trail heading into the wash.

And it was the opposite direction of that thunder.

It’s a cool trail too, because you have to climb over big rocks when you get into the wash there.

But my person didn’t get it. She said we weren’t going that way.

I insisted.

Bongo refusing to budge

I lost.

But that thunder kept getting worse. And it came from the very direction we were headed.

My person says we have to go through this stuff to get home.

But I’m sure we can still get home if we head in another direction.

Back in the Dog Hotel

Bongo Behind Bars

I’m stuck at the dog hotel and I take no responsibility for what’s posted here.

This is the third time this has happened this year.

No, I didn’t run away and get put in dog jail, but sometimes it feels the same.

Like I’m locked behind bars.

But my person keeps bringing me here and then leaves.

It’s not fair.

It’s totally not fair.

My person should never be allowed to go anywhere without me. That’s just not right.

If she’s going on vacation I should be able to go along. This dog hotel isn’t anything like a vacation.

Same old scenery. It’s not even as good as my trails.

Oh, wait. I think my person said something about driving all day long through the desert.

And she said it’s going to be even hotter than my trails have been lately.

And my only options would be to hang out in the car for a long, long time – or to get out in the hot, hot desert where the sand would probably burn through the pads on my paws.

So don’t tell my person that I have some really cool friends at this dog hotel.

And one of them really plays with me a lot.

I don’t want my person to think I’m having any fun here while she’s roasting in the desert.

Because next time she leaves she might be going to a place that I want to go.

Like swimming or something.

And I didn’t tell my person this, but I saved up some of my adventures so while I’m in the dog hotel I can still pretend I’m out having adventures on my trails, and I can share them with you.

Got to go now.

I think one of my friends wants to play.

Manzanita Ice Cream

Home made ice creamThe other day I took my person out picking Manzanita berries and when we came back home she made some Manzanita cider out of them.

Well, my person decided to experiment some more. She decided to put some of that Manzanita juice into ice cream. So today she made ice cream.

I think ice cream might be one of my new favorite foods. Besides fish and meaty bones and cookies, that is.

My person found a recipe for honey vanilla ice cream and put Manzanita juice and sugar in instead of the honey.

And it tasted great!

Bongo eating ice cream from a spoon

But boy was it cold! Is that what they call brain freeze?

I couldn’t eat it all at once, so I dropped some on the floor and ate it in little bits.

Bongo getting dropped ice cream from the floor

I was expecting a few extra flavors to blend in from the floor. But my person just mopped it so all I got was ice cream.

And the Manzanita flavor was missing.

I think my person forgot to put it in because all I could taste was French vanilla. No Manzanita flavor at all.

Or maybe the French vanilla flavors took over the Manzanita flavor – kind of like when floor flavors take over what I think I’m licking up.

But that’s okay. I don’t mind.

French vanilla is good.

Bongo's nose

Can I have some more please?

Thunder Ride

Bongo looking scared in the carToday was a good and bad day.

It was bad because thunder season has officially begun and I am deathly afraid of thunder. It’s not good. It’s evil. I’m sure it’s some kind of monster coming out of the sky to get me.

So I was cowering in the hallway while the thunder was going on, but at least my person was in the house with me and nothing bad has ever happened with the thunder while she’s been here.

Still, it’s scary.

But then my person tried to go out the front door.

I thought I had her trained not to do that. When I’m left alone in thunder I try to escape it by any means possible.

I guess I was right. I do have her trained.

Because my person got my leash and took me out to the car.

Through the thunder.

It was pretty awful, but at least my person was with me.

So we rode in the car for awhile until it stopped and I had to get out.

In the thunder.

Person, you know I’m really brave doing this for you. We could have just stayed home.

But you know where we went to?

My person took me to church.

Bongo in church

And there were all kinds of books full of stories.

No wonder my person never runs out of stories to tell me.

I’m going to have to get her to take me to church more often.

Wait! On second thought, I’d better check first and make sure it doesn’t thunder at church all the time.

Hazy Gloom

Thunder Mountain under a layer of smokeWhen I looked outside yesterday morning I could barely see the red rocks on my trails. They seemed to be covered in some kind of fog.

But we rarely get fog here. And especially not in June.

A heavy cloud has covered the land.

And not just your ordinary fleecy cloud that fades away when the sun gets hot.

This seems like a cloud of doom. A cloud of destruction.

And that’s what it is.

It’s weighing over me so I’m going to take a break from being funny, or silly, or adventurous today.

Sedona Red Rocks behind smoke

Because what is covering up my rocks is the smoke drifting over from the Yarnell Fire.

This fire has made national news due to the loss of nineteen hotshot firefighters. These young men were husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers. They left families and friends behind who are in deep grief over their loss.

This fire has destroyed about two hundred houses and other buildings in Yarnell, and has caused the evacuation of hundreds of residents in the towns of Yarnell and Peeple’s Valley.

And the fire is still running wild and is nowhere near being contained.

So today, rather than telling you about one of my adventures I’m going to ask for prayer instead.

Please pray for all of those who lost a loved one.

Please pray for all those who have lost a home, and for all those who have been evacuated from their homes.

Shelters have been set up for evacuated animals. Please pray for the animals too.

Please pray for the safety of the many people who continue to fight this fire.

And please pray for rain. Lots of it. We haven’t had rain in so long and it’s so dry here. Our rainy season should start in a few days. Please pray that it starts right away- at least over that fire.

Sedona Red Rocks in smoky haze

Did I do okay, person?

I hope they put that fire out right away because I’m ready for another adventure.
