About Bongo

I am a dog who has lots of mini adventures that I love to share. I live with a cat named Scratchy who sometimes steals my blog, and with two people. When my adventures don't turn out so well I get my person to laugh while she helps me write my blog and then I don't get into as much trouble.

A Tribute to Timmy

TimmyHe was my best neighborhood dog friend. He lived right across the street so I saw him a lot.

He wasn’t like me. He hung out on his front porch and usually stayed there. I would have been off and running. But sometimes my person would let me go over there and say hi.

We often went out on the trails together – me and my person and Timmy and his people. But Timmy would turn around and head back home when I was just barely getting started.

.

Timmy and Bongo

Timmy was old, and he walked with a limp. But he was always good for a sniff, and we checked each other out that way often.

I can imagine Timmy now. No limp – no tired old body. He must be off and running on the trails somewhere as fast as I do.

I expect to be running around on my trails for a long time to come yet, maybe as long as Timmy did. Seventeen years is a pretty long time.

But when I’m finally old and worn out there’s one thing I’ve gotta ask.

Timmy, can you save a place for me on your trails?

They’re Here!

Scratchy and Bag in PackageThis is Scratchy here. While Bongo is in the hallway trying to hide from all the thunder we’re having today I thought I’d sneak onto the computer and steal his blog. Actually our person said I could. She even told me to.

That’s because I have some news. Awhile back Bongo’s friends Geraldine and Mr. Cheddar had a contest at their blog My Real Life Reviews. Bongo wanted to enter it but the contest was only for cats and their people, so Bongo entered me. And guess what. I won!

I got three different prizes and the last one just showed up so I thought I’d share them with you – well, at least the pictures of them.

The first one was a bag with cats all over it. My person said she had a use for it so I thought I’d be generous and give it to her. Actually, I couldn’t figure out what I was going to do with that bag anyway.

Then a package came with a book in it. The book is called Crafting with Cat Hair. I was afraid Bongo would to steal all my hair and try to do something with it so I guarded that package carefully.

Scratchy on top of package

But the best package just showed up. It’s full of cat treats and a little catnip. It even came with a letter from Mr. Cheddar and now he’s my friend too.

Scratchy rubbing his head on his bag of treats

My person put the treats back in the box, but even the box is good.

Scratchy rubbing on the box full of treats

What, person? I didn’t understand you. I’m in this treat euphoria here.

What!? What do you mean I have to get Bongo something? Just because he entered me in the contest and I won?

Okay, fine. Here you go Bongo. I think some deer lost his antler so you can have it.

What Does a Mantis Pray?

Praying MantisWhen my person and I came back from our walk we found a mantis over our front door praying for us. I don’t know what a mantis is, but apparently they like to pray a lot. At least this one does because my person says it is a praying mantis.

It’s pretty cool having an insect that’s willing to hang out on top of our front door and pray. I guess that means everyone that walks through the door is blessed.

But what do insects pray for? Is it praying for me and my people, or is it praying for something for itself?

Maybe it’s praying for a little bug to fly into its waiting arms and become its next meal.

Or maybe its praying that no one will spray bug repellant around the door.

It might even be praying that it learns how to make a vase like those ants did the other day and someone will put flowers in it.

Whatever that mantis is praying for I hope it will put in one little prayer for me.

Please, oh please pray that I don’t have to sit in my “Oh no, there’s thunder” pose again.

Tied Up

Bongo tied upThis is real embarrassing. I hardly want to tell you about it – but my people were so full of mischief this weekend that I’ve got to.

Sunday afternoon I was starting to get a little nervous. There were some distant thunderstorms and I don’t like them at all. My person said she couldn’t even hear the thunder, but she knew something was going on by the way I was acting.

So what did she do? She tried to leave the house without me. I don’t like it when she leaves me during a thunderstorm so I do my best to get out of the house with her. Well, she tricked me and got out anyway.

Really, I kind of let her trick me because my younger person was still in the house so I wasn’t all alone.

Well, those thunderstorms kept on going and then, you know what? You’re not going to believe this.

My younger person decided he was going to leave the house too. I certainly wasn’t going to let him leave the house without me. If I had anything to say about it my younger person was going to stay right where he was.

And then he did it! He took some tow rope and tied me up to the wood stove so I couldn’t leave the house with him. If that isn’t mischief I don’t know what is!

At least my person showed up at the house a few minutes later. But you know what she did? She refused to untie me until she got her camera out and took pictures.

If my people are going to get into mischief, they could at least find somebody else to embarrass.

If you want to see what my person looks like, check this out. We both got to be guests on another blog today. Check it out here.

The Burning Bush

English: Moses and the Burning Bush, illustrat...

English: Moses and the Burning Bush, illustration from the 1890 Holman Bible (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

What, person? You mean after Moses ran off to the desert and got married he got to tend sheep too? How cool is that? That means he must have had sheep dogs to hang out with. He must have been pretty happy there.

Okay person, I’m listening now.

After about forty years of hanging out with the sheep and those sheep dogs – wow, that’s a long time. That’s longer than how old I am.

Yes, I’m listening person.

Moses was near Mount Horeb and he saw something strange.

What did he see? What did he see?

What? If I listen I’ll find out? Oh.

He saw a bush burning, but it wasn’t burning up.

How could that be?

So Moses went over to check that bush out.

Then what happened?

What? God called to Moses from within the bush?

You mean God was in the bush and He didn’t burn up either? He must be pretty special.

God told Moses to take off his sandals because he was standing on holy ground. He told Moses He was the God of his father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.

God told Moses He had seen the oppression of His people in Egypt and He was sending Moses to Pharaoh to bring His people the Israelites out of Egypt.

Did Moses finally get to go give that mean old Pharaoh what for?

What? That mean old Pharaoh that wanted Moses dead had died? Moses had to give a different Pharaoh what for?

Moses didn’t want to go? I wouldn’t want to go either if I had sheep and sheep dogs to hang out with all the time.

Moses didn’t think he was worthy but God said He would be with him. So Moses kept making excuses why he wasn’t good enough to go to Pharaoh, but God didn’t buy any of it.

It sounds like God wouldn’t take no for an answer. Kind of like you person, when you want me to do something that I don’t want to do. So did Moses leave his sheep dogs and go to Egypt?

What!? You’re going to make me wait another whole week before you tell me more? I’m heading out to my trails then. Maybe I’ll find a sheep dog who knows the rest of the story.

Ant Pottery

Ant hill shaped like a vaseSome of the ants on my trails must be bored because they are getting creative with their ant hills. Usually they make a little hill at the entrance, or sometimes the hill is reversed and the ants have a funnel entrance.

But this time the entrance looks like the top of a vase. I wonder if some of the ants went to pottery class and decided to put their new talents to work.

I wonder if they have a pottery class just for ants, or if the ants have to take the same class as people do. That might be kind of dangerous.

Just think of all the hazards that could befall the ants. (I might be falling if my person doesn’t stop telling me to use words I don’t understand.)

The ants could crawl into a big vase or pot that a person was making, and then before they could crawl out again the person might decide to start all over and smash the pot.

Or even if the ants did get out in time, if they hung around on the pot they might go with it into the kiln and turn into crispy critters.

And what if the ants were making an ant sized pot and a person didn’t see it and set his pot down on top of it – and on top of the ants.

All kinds of things could happen to those ants if they took a pottery class with people. But it looks like at least some of those ants survived. It’s too bad they waited so long to take the class though. If they’d done it in the spring they would have been able to find some flowers.

Competition from the Rez

Brown DogWait a minute! Who is that dog and why is he on my blog?

He’s a what? A church dog? I thought I was the only church dog.

Okay person, what’s up?

I don’t believe this! My person finally told me where she went earlier this week when she left me at home with my younger person. She said that she and my new friend were at a church on the Navajo Reservation, and that church already has a church dog. She told me that that church dog might not like it if I tried to take over. And you know what else? That church dog is also friends with my new friend.

I’m really not liking this at all.

Brown Dog with Bongo's New Friend

You know what my person said she saw while she was there?

She saw sheep and a sheep dog. I really want to go hang out with those sheep and that sheep dog. And she saw a little black lamb right next to the highway and she was sure glad it didn’t run out in front of her vehicle. I bet I could have corralled in that little black lamb.

My person said at night she saw the Milky Way stretching all the way across the sky.

Now I’m getting hungry. That sounds like something good to eat.

Then my person said that along with the Milky Way she saw thousands of stars all over the sky.

That doesn’t make sense. Who wants stars in their food dish?

I really started getting angry because my person left me home and went to a place with all that good stuff – but then she told me one more thing.

She said along with the Milky Way and all those stars she saw lightning flashes on the horizon from a distant storm.

Thunder storm!? Yikes! Hey person, I’m sure glad you left me home.

Official Trail Guide

Bongo Leading New Friend on the TrailsWoo woo! I’m official now. I’m really an official trail guide. I got to lead my friend who came to visit me on my trails today. I made her hold on tight to my leash so she wouldn’t get lost.

.

.

.

.

.

.

But I had to have a lot of patience with her. I tried to run so she could see as much of my trails as possible before it got dark, but whatever I did, I couldn’t get her to run with me. I kept having to wait for her.

Bongo Looking Back

I showed my friend where all the good smells are. I tried to get her to check them out for herself, but she just wouldn’t do it. I can’t figure out why. She’s missing out on the best part of the tour.

Bongo smelling something while friend waits

I wanted to make sure my friend got the full Arizona experience, so I made sure she brushed against some cactus.

Prickly Pear Cactus

I’m not sure why it’s so important to people, but my person said to make sure I took my new friend where she could see lots of red rocks, so I even took her to see the best scenic views.

Sedona Red Rocks at Sunset

But I seem to be having a problem now. My official fee for giving tours of my trails is lots of loves, but I wore my new friend out so much that she doesn’t have any energy left to give them to me. Next time I give a tour I’m collecting my fee in advance.

Where is She?

Bongo and Friend with ballI don’t believe it. My person left me yesterday and she didn’t come home. I waited and waited for her, but she was nowhere to be found. My younger person stayed home with me, but where did my person go?

Bedtime came and my person was still not here. It was pretty lonely sleeping on my bed without my person sleeping on the bed next to me.

The next day my younger person fed me breakfast. I had to wait though. He doesn’t get up very early and I had to remind him that I was hungry. He only feeds me breakfast when my person is gone.

Where, oh where has my person gone?

My younger person left and I found myself alone with Scratchy – and it was getting close to dinner time.

Scratchy won’t feed me dinner. What am I to do? I’m getting hungry.

Finally, my person drove up. Just in time. I don’t think I could have gone without food much longer.

And guess what! She brought me a friend. I’ve never met this friend before but we talk on my blog sometimes.

And my friend likes to play catch. Woo woo!

Plump Prickly Pears

Skinny Prickly PearWe didn’t have rain here for weeks and weeks. The prickly pear cacti were getting skinny. So skinny that you could hardly see them if you looked at them from the edge. They had to come at you flat on, but don’t try to shake their hand. You’ll be sorry.

The last few days we have had lots and lots of rain. And now we have plump prickly pears. Even the fruits that were looking like scrawny little things have plumped out. The prickly pears are so plump now that even when they try to hide they can’t.

.

Plump Prickly Pear

Where did this hedgehog cactus come from? I think I remember it from when it was blooming, but it must have walked away and just now come back. Or maybe it was a skinny little thing like those prickly pears. My my, look how plump you’ve gotten little cactus. You’re lucky you have pricklers or I might want to eat you.

Bongo sniffing near the hedgehog cactus

I think all the cacti on my trails have become happy campers. I bet they think they found their cloud with the silver lining.
