Happy Birthday Arizona

Arizona Flag with HeartsHappy Valentine’s Day Birthday Arizona. I know it’s Valentine’s Day today, and I think I’ll go look for some cute girls to get some loves from – but my person told me it’s also Arizona’s birthday. She says it’s Arizona’s hundredth birthday – something called a Centennial.

Okay person, I don’t know what centennial means but if you’re asking, I don’t have ten cents to give you. Maybe you should increase my allowance – at least give me more doggie treats.

My person has been really busy on her computer the last few days and not paying much attention to me. Okay, she did stop and take me out on my trails. She says she was working on a presentation for her church on the Christian history of Arizona because it’s the Centennial. Person, I told you I don’t have any money.

She told me about this town named Tombstone that she learned some new things about. Have you heard of Tombstone? It’s kind of famous but I’ve never been there. My person says she and my younger person have – before they got me. My person says they’ve made lots of movies about Tombstone. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday lived there, and that’s where they had the shootout at the OK Corral.

Person, is this an animal story? Why are you telling me this?

Horses? They had horses? Okay. I guess that’s good enough.

My person says Tombstone had lots of miners, cowboys, and gunslingers, – and horses, but they had something else too. She says the very first Protestant church in Arizona was built there.

Person, wouldn’t all those tough guys beat up the church people?

Really? My person says the priest who oversaw the building of the church was a boxer and nobody wanted to mess with him.

What??? You mean that church was started by a dog!!!?

Confession

Two Little DogsI’m going to get really serious today and tell you something personal. I don’t know if I can do this, I mean – serious isn’t fun and I’m sure you know how much I’m about fun.

Okay, here goes. This is a real confession. My younger person didn’t used to like me very much. He said I was bad and he didn’t want anything to do with me. It made me feel bad – so I’m not sure if I was bad, or I just felt bad.

Anyway, for the last several months my younger person has been spending a lot of time at the house of a very special friend. This special friend of my younger person has dogs – two of them.

These dogs aren’t like me at all. I’m not allowed to tell you what they do for fear of giving us dogs a bad name. Yeah I know, I’m not perfect but I’m good when my people are around – I am, aren’t I person? I’ve got to have a little fun when you’re not here.

Now that my younger person has been spending time around these other dogs he’s decided that he likes me much better – that I’m not so bad after all. All that being said, I can’t figure out for the life of me why my younger person keeps hanging out with those other dogs.

Dog Heaven

Bongo Sniffing on the TrailsMy person and I passed a lady on my trails and she said she thought the trails were Dog Heaven. My trails are pretty special, but I never thought of them that way before. That means that every time I leave my house and head out on my trails I’m in heaven. That means that heaven is right here – right next to my house.

That is so awesome. Someday, way far from now, I won’t have to go to the bother of crossing over the Rainbow Bridge because I’ll just have to walk out to my trails and I’ll be in heaven. There will be other dogs there, and people too, because I always see other dogs and people on my trails.

And I won’t be so far from home, so I can just stop by whenever I want. I can take my people for a walk so they’ll be in heaven too. Hey, I think that means we’re all in heaven every time we go out on my trails.

Hey person, can we go to heaven now?

Trucks and Cones

Trucks parked behind conesToday when we went to my trails there were two trucks parked at the trailhead. It’s normal to see trucks there, but these trucks had orange cones around them and signs on the cones. I’m thinking they didn’t want dogs to use their trucks as if they were fire hydrants or trees, and if they put the cones out they figured we’d use them instead.

My person read the signs on the cones and said that wasn’t it at all. She said the people in the trucks had gone out to trim trees that had grown up around the power lines a ways out on my trails.

That means they might knock down some branches that no dog has ever been able to reach before. This is my chance to be the first to put my mark on those branches. Let’s go, person. Let’s go find where they’re cutting those trees.

Well, we found the tree cutters but they weren’t cutting anything down. My person said they were probably taking a break.

Give me a break! I was planning to do those guys a favor. When the word gets out that there are unmarked branches, every dog in the neighborhood will be there. If they’d been doing their job so I could do mine, I would have saved them from having to deal with all those crowds.

What’s That Scream?

People screaming on top of SugarloafMy person and I walked out my front door for our walk today and heard someone screaming. This isn’t a sound I’m used to hearing so I looked around to see where it was coming from. Way up on the top of Sugarloaf were two tiny people, and one of them was screaming.

This got me worried. Did I need to run back into the house and put on my Super Dog costume? It looked like somebody needed rescuing. Of course now I had to figure out what this person needed rescuing from.

There was a raven flying around and cawing. This raven looked large enough to pluck a tiny person from the top of Sugarloaf. I may have to use my super flying powers to get up there fast enough to rescue that person.

What if that tiny screaming person was about to slip and fall. I may have to fly up there and catch her before she fell all the way. But what if she only fell part way and got stuck?

Hey person, do you have a rope? We might have to take it up there. I’ll hold it in my teeth and throw it down to that person so she can climb back up.

What? She’s only having fun? You think she’s screaming because she made it to the top and she has a great view? You mean I don’t get to rescue her?

So much for Super Dog. And I was really hoping to get in some loves.

Toy on the Trail

Bongo found a ballHey, check it out. Someone left their tennis ball on my trail. Cool!

I wonder why they did that. Why would anyone leave a valuable tennis ball sitting in the middle of the trail? If they took it this far, wouldn’t they want to take it all the way? I wouldn’t think they would want to lose it.

Maybe someone tossed the ball to a dog and the dog thought it went in the bushes and couldn’t find it. Or maybe the dog saw one of those pesky squirrels and dropped the ball to go chasing the squirrel – and then couldn’t find the ball again.

Or maybe that dog’s person told him to drop it. No, that couldn’t be. People don’t make their dogs drop their toys and leave them. My person only makes me drop my toys so I don’t take them outside.

Well, maybe I’ll take that ball with me. Maybe I’ll find the dog it belongs to and I can give it back. I’m sure that dog would be happy to get his ball back.

Ball left on trail

I think maybe that dog will find his ball if I leave it here.

Popsicle Weeds

Popsicle WeedsAround my house weeds grow year round. We get different ones in the summer and more of them, but we have a few winter weeds too. Sometimes weeds are tasty treats and I like to go out into my yard and munch. My person doesn’t like it when I do, so I have to try to do it on the sly.

The other day I found a new kind of weed. I tried to eat it but it was a bit stiff and didn’t have much flavor. And it was cold – and frosty.

I think it was a popsicle weed. But I would be really embarrassed sharing this popsicle weed as is, so I need to make some improvements in it. My person says people popsicles have flavors like cherry, or grape, or lemon.

Well those flavors don’t work for me so I thought maybe I’d try peanut butter popsicle weeds, and maybe cheese popsicle weeds. And I could make some chicken flavor and beef flavor popsicle weeds too.

I’m going to get right on this so I can share these new treats with all my friends. I just have one thing to work out before I get started.

Does anybody know how to get frozen peanut butter to stick to a weed?

Gotcha Day

Bongo with his new toy

My New Gotcha Day Toy

Woo hoo! Today is my Gotcha Day. I first learned about Gotcha Days when my friend Rumpy celebrated his. All these years I haven’t been able to celebrate my birthday because my people don’t know when it is. Now I get to celebrate Gotcha Day instead – the day my people took me home with them. I even got a new toy and my people promised me some more goodies later.

Since it’s a special day I thought I’d post something a little different. Rumpy is good at encouraging his friends to write poems and I posted this one on his blog on his Gotcha Day. It seems like the thing to do to post it here today.

Bongo’s Gotcha Day

I like to run

I run for fun

But it really got me in trouble

They locked me away

For more than a day

It kind of burst my bubble

Dog jail’s no good

I don’t like the food

And other dogs barking all night

I’m stuck here for sure

My brain is a blur

To live like this is such a fright

But they came, yes they came

And they tossed me a ball

Then they left just as fast

One more ball – Is that all?

The next day I saw them

My leash they did get

They took me and told me

I’d be their new pet

At first I was scared

When I saw my new home

The cat didn’t like me

And the yard I did roam

But now I’m adjusted

I’m happy to say

Especially when someone

Is willing to play

Top of the Fridge

Stuff on the FridgeHey Scratchy, my our person’s been gone for an awfully long time and she left your food dish on top of the refrigerator. I bet you’re getting really hungry.

You ought to go up and get it Scratchy. I know there’s not a lot of room to land up there, with your big bag of cat food and all that other stuff sitting up there. Now that I’m thinking of it, could you toss down some of my treats while you’re up there?

Well, just be careful. That purple watercolor paint is almost empty now so you won’t spill it again. Even if you do, there’s already a streak of it on the wall, so you’d probably just be making it better. A purple pattern on the wall would be nice.

Good try Scratchy. Yeah, I know it’s hard getting up there but you got your food dish down. You didn’t really want any of your food did you? That was a great aim because it landed right on the table.

I think I’ll just pull up a chair and have a tasty treat.

Walking in the Rain

BongoCome on person. It’s not my fault you were gone all day and then it started raining just when you were going to take me out. You’ve got a hood on your jacket. Put it up. Let’s go.

Go figure. You didn’t even want to go out in the rain and now you’ve got your camera out. See, what did I tell you? It’s really pretty out here when it rains. Keep walking person.

Grayback in Rain

You can look at that rainbow as long as you keep walking while you’re doing it. Put your camera away person. We’re supposed to be going on a walk.

Rainbow behind dead tree

Rainbow over Sugarloaf

It’s a good thing I talked you into going out in the rain. The sun’s going down. It we’d waited until the rain stopped it would have been dark.

Rainy Sunset

You’re already wet person, but since my younger person didn’t come with us would it be alright if I shake myself off on him?

Wet Bongo

I don’t care if he gets mad. I’m doing it anyway.
